Ten cases of pneumonitis in congenital Chagas' disease are described. Amastigotes were found in the lungs in seven cases, and in two of these cases parasitized cells were seen in the alveolar lumen. In five cases parasites were found both in the lungs and in the amniotic epithelium of the extraplacental membranes and umbilical cord. The authors conclude that infection of the amniotic epithelium originated in the lungs and was carried by the amniotic fluid, and emphasize the epidemiological importance ...

The Brazilian Sleep Association brought together specialists in sleep medicine, in order to develop new guidelines on the diagnosis and treatment of insomnias. The following subjects were discussed: concepts, clinical and psychosocial evaluations, recommendations for polysomnography, pharmacological treatment, behavioral and cognitive therapy, comorbidities and insomnia in children. Four levels of evidence were envisaged: standard, recommended, optional and not recommended. For diagnosing of insomnia, ...

ABSTRACT Background There are two bonding strategies for composite restorations: the etch-and-rinse (ER) approach and the self-etch (SE) approach. Few clinical trials have evaluated the SE approach in Class V restorations for a 36-month period. The authors conducted a study to evaluate whether the SE system can provide retention rates and marginal discoloration similar to that of the ER system. Methods Twenty-five patients, each having at least two pairs of equivalent noncarious cervical lesions under occlusion, ...

Rat behaviors in the elevated T-maze (ETM) were evaluated following tectum microinjections of either glycine (GLY, 1, 10, 80 and 120 nmol) or d-serine (D-SER, 160 and 320 nmol), the putative endogenous agonists of GLY-B site at NMDA receptor, or the respective antagonist 7-chloro-kynurenic acid (7CK, 8 nmol). ETM performance was appraised by two validated scores of anxiety, i.e., the inhibitory avoidance duration (AD) and risk assessment behavior, and two scores derived from a newly developed approach ...

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a progressive disease that leads to substantial morbidity and eventual death. Pulmonary multidetector CT angiography (MDCTA), pulmonary MR angiography (MRA) and MR-derived pulmonary perfusion (MRPP) imaging are non-invasive imaging techniques for the differential diagnosis of PH. MDCTA is considered the gold standard for the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism, one of the most common causes of PH. MRA and MRPP are promising techniques that do not require the use of ionising ...

Abstract The Piper L. genus has a great variety of commercially, pharmacologically and biologically interesting species. The present study focused on essential oils extracted by means of the hydrodistillation from dry leaves of Piper cernuum, Piper glabratum, Piper hispidum and Piper madeiranum. The species supplied essential oil contents of between 0.5% and 0.8%. Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry analyses revealed that the majority of components were -elemene (11.6%) and epi-cubebol (13.1%) for ...

This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and the factors associated with non-syndromic tooth agenesis, besides identifying its pattern of occurrence. Pre-orthodontic exams of 3400 subjects, aged 8–30 years, were selected from a radiographic center in Brazil. Panoramic and periapical radiographs were analyzed to verify the presence of tooth agenesis and other six dental anomalies. Descriptive statistics were calculated using the Tooth Agenesis Code tool and, to evaluate significant associations, ...

Abstract Background Given the severe economic and performance implications of hamstring injuries, there are different attempts to identify their risk factors for subsequently developing injury prevention strategies to reduce the risk of these injuries. One of the strategies reported in the scientific literature is the application of interventions with eccentric exercises. The present study aimed at comparing frontal beta power between long-term (LTM) and first-time meditators (FTM), before, during and after a meditation session. We hypothesized that LTM would present lower beta power than FTM due to lower effort of attention and awareness.Twenty one participants were recruited, eleven of whom were long-term meditators. The subjects were asked to rest for 4 minutes before and after open monitoring (OM) meditation (40 minutes). The two-way ANOVA revealed an interaction ...

In the effort to control global warming and fossil carbon emissions, many countries are proposing new policies to make their energy matrix more renewable. The increase share of bioethanol as a transportation fuel emerges as a short-term solution because its production technology is mature and it can be blended to gasoline. Ethanol production reached 108 billion liters in 2018 and is predicted to increase in the next years. In this work the global CO2-eq emission, which is avoided by the use of 1G ...

This paper presents a general thermodynamically consistent non-isothermal phase field framework to model effects of damage, fracture and fatigue evolutions in elasto-plastic materials under the hypothesis of small strains. The proposed methodology is obtained from the principle of virtual power, energy balance and second law of thermodynamics in the form of a generalized Clausius–Duhem inequality for entropy. Aspects of the energy degradation functions are thoroughly investigated for an isotropic ...

The objective of this study was to manufacture and to evaluate the physico-mechanical properties of the Lithium disilicate (Li2O5Si2) ceramic structures fabricated using additive manufacturing (3D printing). Li2O5Si2 samples were divided into (n = 30/group): SM (subtractively manufactured) and AR (additive/robocasting). For the AR group, Li2O5Si2 powder was combined with ammonium polyacrylate, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, and polyelectrolyte to create a colloidal gel, which was then used for printing. ...

Abstract This paper proposes a thermodynamically consistent phase-field damage model for viscoelastic materials following the strategy developed by Boldrini et al. (Methods Appl Mech Eng 312:395–427, 2016). Suitable free-energy and pseudo-potentials of dissipation are developed to build a model leading to a stress-strain relation, under the assumption of finite strain, in terms of fractional derivatives. A novel degradation function, which properly couples stress response and damage evolution for ...
