The expanded austenite γN can be produced in austenitic stainless steels by plasma nitriding, carburizing or nitrocarburizing at low temperatures. This metastable phase presents higher hardness and toughness if compared with traditional nitride layers whilst also maintaining the corrosion resistance. However, the application of plasmas composed by both nitrogen and carbon is technologically recent and the effect of such process on the microstructure and properties of the nitrocarburized layers is ...

Plasma nitriding is a thermo-physical-chemical treatment process, which promotes surface hardening, caused by interstitial diffusion of atomic nitrogen into metallic alloys. In this work, this process was employed in the surface modification of a sintered ferrous alloy. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses, and wear and microhardness tests were performed on the samples submitted to ferrox treatment and plasma nitriding carried out under different conditions of time ...

Expanded austenite (γN), which can be produced during plasma nitriding of austenitic stainless steels, provides high levels of strength, toughness and corrosion resistance by comparison with traditional nitride layers. However, expanded austenite properties can be lost due to decomposition caused its thermodynamic metastability. In the present work, austenitic stainless AISI 316L steel was plasma nitrided at 723 K for 5 h at 500 Pa and microstructurally characterised by X-ray diffraction (XRD), and ...

Tool steels are applied in a variety of industrial operations providing a good balance of properties. Surface engineering has the potential to improve productivity and further extend the lifetime of metallic components. In the present work plasma nitriding is applied to the hot work AISI H13 tool steel to improve wear and corrosion characteristics. The steel was nitrided in the tempered condition at three different temperatures and pressures for 5 h of duration. At 450 °C of nitriding temperature ...

Supermartensitic stainles steels (SMSS's) are a new generation of martensitic steels that have been increasingly used in oil and gas applications due to their adequate corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. In the present study, SMSS specimens (UNS S41425) were solution heat treated and air cooled followed by plasma nitriding and nitrocarburising at 400, 450 and 500°C for 5h. The produced layers were characterized by optical microscopy, microhardness testing, X-ray diffraction and corrosion ...

Austempered ductile iron (ADI) is the most recent development in the nodular iron family. The austempering treatment produces a unique microstructure, ausferrite, which provides high mechanical strength combined with ductility, toughness, and good fatigue and wear resistance. The effect of alloying elements Cu, Ni and Mo on the mechanical properties and austemperability of ADI is reported. The mechanical strength and toughness decreased with the addition of Mo, but both wear resistance and austemperability ...

Bearing steels must have high hardness, good wear resistance and dimensional stability. In the present work, the AISI 52100 bearing steel was selected as the substrate for a niobium carbide coating produced by a salt-bath thermo-reactive deposition process. The present work addresses the effect of niobium carbide coating on the wear and corrosion resistance of the abovementioned steel. A homogeneous layer composed solely by the cubic niobium carbide (NbC) was produced. The carbide coating yielded ...

Pack chromising treatment is an environmentally friendly alternative to hard chromium to form wear and corrosion resistant surface layers. In this work, samples of AISI 1060 steel were pack chromised for 6 and 9 h at 1000 and 1050°C using different activator concentrations. Wear tests were performed in dry conditions and corrosion tests in natural sea water for the pack chromised samples and hard chromium. Pack chromising yielded the formation of layers with high chromium concentrations, high hardness ...

Supermartensitic stainless steels (SMSSs) are a new generation of the classic 13%Cr martensitic steels, lower in carbon and with additional alloying of nickel and molybdenum offering better weldabilty and low temperature toughness. Several works have shown that plasma nitriding and nitrocarburising of stainless steels at low temperatures produces a hard surface layer which results in increased wear resistance. In this work, SMSS samples were plasma nitrided and nitrocarburised at 400, 450 and 500° ...

Abstract High chromium content is responsible for the formation of a protective passive surface layer on austenitic stainless steels (ASS). Due to their larger amounts of chromium, superaustenitic stainless steels (SASS) can be chosen for applications with higher corrosion resistance requirements. However, both of them present low hardness and wear resistance that has limited their use for mechanical parts fabrication. Plasma nitriding is a very effective surface treatment for producing harder and ...

Abstract The bradykinin‐potentiating peptides from Bothrops jararaca venom are the most potent natural inhibitors of the angiotensin‐converting enzyme. The biochemical and biological features of these peptides were crucial to demonstrate the pivotal role of the angiotensin‐converting enzyme in blood pressure regulation. The superiority of superaustenitic stainless steel (SASS) lies in its good weldability and great resistance to stress corrosion and pitting, because of its higher chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen contents, when compared to general stainless steels. However, some of its applications are limited by very poor wear behavior. Plasma-nitriding is a very effective treatment for producing wear resistant and hard surface layers on stainless steels without compromising the corrosion resistance. In this work, ...

Recent advances in electrode design and surgical techniques have made the preservation of residual low-frequency hearing achievable and desirable.
