Within the framework of the standard mean-field approximation and an effective-field theory with correlation the authors discuss the phase diagram for surface ordering in a semi-infinite Ising spin system with a transverse field. Although analytically simple, the effective-field theory is superior to the standard mean-field approximation. A certain characteristic behaviour is found for the surface ordering both in the standard mean-field approximation and in the effective-field theory.

The separation of rare earth elements, cobalt and nickel from NiMH battery residues is evaluated in this paper. Analysis of the internal content of the NiMH batteries shows that nickel is the main metal present in the residue (around 50% in weight), as well as potassium (2.2–10.9%), cobalt (5.1–5.5%), rare earth elements (15.3–29.0%) and cadmium (2.8%). The presence of cadmium reveals that some Ni–Cd batteries are possibly labeled as NiMH ones. The leaching of nickel and cobalt from the NiMH battery ...

A hydrometallurgical route is proposed in this paper for the selective separation of zinc and manganese from spent alkaline batteries. The recycling route comprises the following steps: (1) batteries dismantling to separate the spent batteries dust from other components (iron scraps, plastic and paper), (2) grinding of the batteries dust to produce a black homogeneous powder, (3) leaching of the powder in two sequential steps, "neutral leaching with water" to separate potassium and produce a KOH solution, ...

ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the use of wastewater from the cassava processing as organic fertilizer on pastures of Brachiaria brizantha cv. ‘Marandu’. The treatments were wastewater doses (0, 15, 30, 60 and 120 m3 ha-1), in a randomized block design with four replicates. The structural characteristics and morphological composition of the pastures were evaluated, from July 2013 to January 2014. The addition of wastewater promoted a positive linear increase in the three cuts for the canopy ...

Over 50 million cubic meters of mining tailings were released in the Rio Doce basin after the collapse of the Fundão dam (Samarco) in November 2015. Predicting significant impacts on the Rio Doce estuary, we sampled sediments to investigate short-term impacts on the benthic assemblages and trace metal accumulation on estuarine sediments. With the arrival of the tailing plumes in the estuary, we detected a predominance of clay particles and increased trace metal concentrations of up to 5 times in ...

Despite over 21,000 ha of mangrove forests being removed per year in Brazil, ecological changes following mangrove deforestation have been overlooked. Here we evaluated changes in benthic macrofaunal assemblages and food-webs at a mangrove removal and natural sites in a tropical estuary in Eastern Brazil. The impacted site had coarser sediment particle sizes suggesting significant changes in sedimentation processes after forest clearing. Spatial differences in macrofaunal abundance, biomass and ...

Tropical forests and savannas are responsible for the largest proportion of global Gross Primary Productivity (GPP), a major component of the global carbon cycle. However, there are still deficiencies in the spatial and temporal information of tropical photosynthesis and its relations with environmental controls. The MOD17 product, based on the Light Use Efficiency (LUE) concept, has been updated to provide GPP estimates around the globe. In this research, the MOD17 GPP collections 5.0, 5.5 and 6. ...

In addition to the largest existing expanse of tropical forests, the Brazilian Amazon has among the largest area of mangroves in the world. While recognized as important global carbon sinks that, when disturbed, are significant sources of greenhouse gases, no studies have quantified the carbon stocks of these vast mangrove forests. In this paper, we quantified total ecosystem carbon stocks of mangroves and salt marshes east of the mouth of the Amazon River, Brazil. Mean ecosystem carbon stocks of ...

Estuaries are under major impacts from pollution even when managed as conservation units. Here we used multiple biogeochemical indexes of contamination and trophic status, including faecal sterols, biopolymers and trace metals, to determine and compare environmental quality of two tropical estuaries with contrasting conservation status. In the metropolitan estuary, eutrophic/hypereutrophic conditions and high concentrations (>1.0 µg g−1) of coprostanol were spatially correlated to sources of raw sewage ...

Abstract Mangroves of the semiarid Caatinga region of northeastern Brazil are being rapidly converted to shrimp pond aquaculture. To determine ecosystem carbon stocks and potential greenhouse gas emissions from this widespread land use, we measured carbon stocks of eight mangrove forests and three shrimp ponds in the Acaraú and Jaguaribe watersheds in Ceará state, Brazil. The shrimp ponds were paired with adjacent intact mangroves to ascertain carbon losses and potential emissions from land conversion. ...

Extreme weather events are likely to become more frequent in the 21st century bringing significant impacts to coastal ecosystems. However, the capacity to detect and measure those impacts are still limited, with effects largely unstudied. In June 2016, a hailstorm with wind gusts of over 100 km·h−1 caused an unprecedented mangrove dieback on Eastern Brazil. To quantify the scale of impact and short-term recovery of mangroves (15-mo), we used satellite imagery and field sampling to evaluate changes ...

Accurate estimates of aboveground biomass (AGB) in tropical forests are critical for supporting strategies of ecosystem functioning conservation and climate change mitigation. However, such estimates at regional and local scales are still highly uncertain. Airborne Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) and Hyperspectral Imaging (HSI) can characterize the structural and functional diversity of forests with high accuracy at a sub-meter resolution, and potentially improve the AGB estimations. In this study, ...

Climate change will increase the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events with potential effects in coastal and estuarine ecosystems. During drought periods, higher salinity and temperature can directly impact estuarine benthic assemblages through physiological stress and alteration of sedimentary habitats, but these effects are poorly evaluated to date. Abstract The potential of Blue Carbon as an integral part of global climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies requires quantification of drivers and rates of organic carbon (OC) burial and storage. However, there is limited recognition of how land use impacts benthic assemblages, their bioturbation potential, and OC burial in mangrove forests and tidal flats. Here we evaluated the effects of mangrove deforestation on benthic bioturbation potential (BPc), sediment accretion rates (SARs), and ...

Drought periods may change mangrove litterfall production through water deprivation and increasing tree evapotranspiration, but these impacts have been rarely estimated. In Brazil, an intense drought and strong winds impacted mangrove forests leading to mass tree mortality in 2016, suggesting that forest productivity also declined rapidly. Fifteen months after the initial impact, we started to monitor and quantify litterfall production in paired transects from disturbed and undisturbed mangroves. ...

In general, wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) use basic effluent treatment (primary and secondary). However, including a tertiary treatment may enhance the quality of the treated effluent, making it reusable for different purposes. Several tertiary treatment techniques are available in the literature (e.g., coagulation, flocculation, filtration, and oxidation), but they are mainly focused on nutrients and contaminants remove (e.g., trace metals). However, when microalgae cultivation is applied as ...

Drought events may induce mangrove mortality and dieback events worldwide as a result of climate extremes. As mangroves sequester large quantities of carbon, quantifying the losses of these stocks following climate disturbances may guide wetland governance strategies globally. In Southeast Brazil, we determined the total ecosystem carbon stocks (TECS) of pristine mangroves that were up to 1851 Mg of carbon per hectare (Mg C ha−1), which are the highest stocks measured from South American and raising ...

Rhodoliths are free-living and morphologically diverse marine calcareous algae commonly distributed over the continental shelf seafloor. They increase the seabed structural complexity and are of potential value as feeding and reproductive grounds for a myriad of marine fauna. The higher structural seabed complexity within rhodolith beds may also increase benthic diversity by creating microhabitats, but this relationship has been rarely explored within rhodolith beds worldwide. Here we compared benthic ...

The Eastern Brazil Marine Ecoregion includes over 50 estuaries along roughly 1200 km of coastline with latitudinal changes in mean rainfall and average yearly atmospheric temperatures. Estuarine ecosystems within this ecoregion have been relatively well studied with respect to the impacts from human pollution and the benthic biodiversity in mangrove forests, estuarine channels, and tidal flats. Benthic estuarine assemblages exhibit typical spatial changes with salinity gradients, with higher diversity ...

Artisanal fisheries are of great importance in Brazil, as they are responsible for more than 50% of national fish production. This importance, associated with the necessity of conserving marine environments threatened by multiple competing uses, leads us to propose mechanisms for co-management of fisheries by users and public authorities. This proposal takes into account: a) local conflicts between artisanal and industrial fishers; b) local rules over the use of fishing areas established by artisanal ...
