INTRODUCTION OF ARBOVIRUSES This review will focus on the 4 arboviruses endemic in Latin America, 3 of which have been described in solid-organ transplant (SOT) recipients. A multitude of arthropod-borne viruses associated with human disease may circulate in tropical and subtropical regions.1 Physicians should be aware that symptoms of fever, joint pain, and rash of undetermined origin in donors, and transplant candidates and recipients could be related to unusual arboviruses, particularly because ...

Background and Purpose: Stroke is a leading cause of death in Brazil. Knowledge about the clinical manifestations of stroke as well as its risk factors and its management is still poor in the country. We intended to assess the stroke knowledge of an urban population in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Methods: Individuals assisted by a basic health unit were interviewed between February and August 2014. Mosquito-borne viruses threaten public health worldwide. When the ratio of competent vectors to susceptible humans is low enough, the virus's basic reproductive number (R0) falls below 1.0 (each case generating, on average, <1.0 additional case) and the infection fades out from the population. Conventional mosquito control tactics, however, seldom yield R0 < 1.0. A promising alternative uses mosquitoes to disseminate a potent growth-regulator larvicide, pyriproxyfen (PPF), to aquatic larval habitats; ...

OBJECTIVE - To analyze immediate and late results of percutaneous mitral valvotomy (PMV) in patients < or = 18 year. METHODS - Between August '87 and July '97, 48 procedures were performed on 40 patients. The mean age was 15.6 years; 68.7% were females four of whom were pregnant. RESULTS - Success was obtained in 91.7% of the procedures. Immediate complications were severe mitral regurgitation (6.3%) and cardiac tamponade (2.0%). Late follow-up was obtained in 88.8% of the patients (mean value=43.2+/-33.9 months). ...

Tuberculosis made a resurgence in the mid-1980s and now kills approximately 3 million people a year. The re-emergence of tuberculosis as a public health threat, the high susceptibility of HIV-infected persons and the proliferation of multi-drug-resistant strains have created a need to develop new drugs. Shikimate kinase and other enzymes in the shikimate pathway are attractive targets for development of non-toxic antimicrobial agents, herbicides and anti-parasitic drugs, because the pathway is essential ...

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE To describe the magnitude of the expenditure on medicines in Brazil according to region, household size and composition in terms of residents in a situation of dependency. METHODS Population-based data from the national household survey were used, with probabilistic sample, applied between September 2013 and February 2014 in urban households. The expenditure on medicines was the main outcome of interest. The prevalence and confidence intervals (95%CI) of the outcomes were stratified ...

Botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) is an effective treatment for post-stroke spasticity; however, some patients cannot access treatment until ≥1 year post-stroke. This Brazilian post-marketing study (NCT02390206) assessed the achievement of person-centered goals in patients with chronic post-stroke spasticity after a BoNT-A injection. Patients had a last documented stroke ≥1 year before study entry and post-stroke upper limb (UL) spasticity, with or without lower limb (LL) spasticity. Patients received BoNT- ...

Earlier studies of the natural history of Chagas disease (ChD), which is caused by the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi, had suggested that the consequences of the disease in the elderly are negligible. The objective of this study was to estimate long-term mortality in ChD in old age using data from a large population-based cohort study. The study was conducted in Bambui City (~15,000 inhabitants), Brazil. Participants were 1479 residents aged 60 years and over (84.9% from total), who were followed from ...

In this study, the authors aimed to investigate the prognostic value of β-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) for all-cause mortality among persons with Chagas disease, a parasitic disease caused by the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi. The authors used data on 1,398 participants (37.5% infected with T. cruzi) aged 60 years and over from the Bambuí Cohort Study of Aging in Brazil. From 1997 to 2007, 512 participants died, leading to 12,406 person-years of observation. The hazard ratio for death was 1.27 for ...

In state of Acre, most anuran research has been carried out in areas of terra firme, whereas alluvial forests remain relatively unexplored. We document the richness, breeding environments and calling season of the anurans of the Lower Moa River in the Alto Juruá (state of Acre), a region considered to harbor high biodiversity. Sampling was conducted in two main areas with different forest typologies (Terra firme forest and Alluvial forest), totaling 256 ha. The diversity of anurans was analyzed using ...

Background Standard human landing catches (sHLCs) have historically been a key component of Onchocerca volvulus transmission monitoring, but expose health-workers to potentially hazardous vector bites. Novel human-bait-free trapping methods have been developed, but do not always work where they are needed and may not generate O. volvulus surveillance data that is directly comparable with historic data. Methodology Simuliid sHLCs and mineral-oil protected HLCs (mopHLCs) were performed in a rural village ...

This study describes the epidemiological profile of American cutaneous leishmaniasis in Assis Brasil, a town located at the border of Brazil, Peru and Bolivia, between 2003 and 2010. Leishmaniasis case files were reviewed and frequencies compared using the Fisher Exact Test or Chi-square. There were 579 cases recorded, with a detection coefficient of 191 and 82 cases per 10,000 inhabitants in 2003 and 2010, respectively. Cases were more frequent in males (63.0%), in persons living in rural areas ( ...

The scores of the FHT-R test were then compared with a psychiatric assessment using the Clinical Interview Schedule. Five persons were regarded as OBS "cases" and 86 as OBS "non cases". Faced with the difficulty of catching young shrimp individuals in estuaries, a beam trawl was developed and tested. It was effective in catching shrimps measuring between 2.7 and 11.5 mm in length and crabs of 5.99 to 6.64 mm in length. The equipment is resistant to corrosion and can be maneuvered by one person. The net fastening system is easy to operate, allowing its removal after every trawl, thus avoiding possible sample losses with onboard handling. The ideal trawling time was around 3 minutes ...

Aging is related to a decrease in physiological abilities, especially cognitive functions. To unravel further evidence of age-related cognitive decline, we analyzed which physical and functional variables are predictors of cognitive performance in a sample of 498 Brazilian elderly (67.26% women). To do so, we used the Stroop test as a tool to evaluate executive functions and the General functional fitness index (GFFI) to evaluate the functional fitness of the participants. A linear regression analysis ...
