This paper addresses fundamental issues in tail-sitting and transition flight aerodynamics modeling in view of sum-of-squares (SOS) algorithmic guidance and control design. A novel approach, called theory, for modeling aerodynamic forces and moments is introduced herein. It yields polynomial-like differential equations of motion that are well suited to SOS solvers for real-time algorithmic guidance and control law synthesis. The proposed theory allows for first principles model parameter identification ...

This study aimed to estimate five harmonized healthy aging indicators covering functional ability and intrinsic capacity among older women and men from Brazil and England and evaluate their association with loneliness. This was a cross-sectional study. We used two nationally representative samples of men and women aged ≥60 years from the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Aging (ELSI-Brazil) wave 2 (2019–2021; n = 6929) and the English Longitudinal Study of Aging wave 9 (2018–2019; n = 5902). Through metabolic analysis, the present research seeks to reveal the defense mechanisms activated by a heavy metals-resistant plant, Sesuvium portulacastrum L. In this regard, shifting metabolisms in this plant were investigated in different heavy metals-contaminated experimental sites, which were 50, 100, 500, 1000, and 5000 m away from a man-fabricated sewage dumping lake, with a wide range of pollutant concentrations. Heavy metals contaminations in contaminated soil and their impact on mineral ...

The genus Dipteryx, to which the cumaru tree belongs, contains neotropical species native to Central and South American countries. They are used both in the sale of timber and seeds and for the extraction of the active compound coumarin, used as a flavoring agent. This study evaluated the phytochemical profile and antioxidant activity of extracts of leaves, branches, and fruits (residues and seeds) of the species Dipteryx punctata. Zoonotic outbreaks of sporotrichosis are increasing in Brazil. We examined and described the emergence of cat-transmitted sporotrichosis (CTS) caused by the fungal pathogen Sporothrix brasiliensis. We calculated incidence and mapped geographic distribution of cases in Curitiba, Brazil, by reviewing medical records from 216 sporotrichosis cases diagnosed during 2011-May 2022. Proven sporotrichosis was established in 84 (39%) patients and probable sporotrichosis in 132 (61%). Incidence increased from ...

Left ventricular (LV) systolic dysfunction in cardiac amyloidosis (CA) is associated with poor prognosis. This study aimed to investigate the prognostic implications of right ventricular (RV) systolic dysfunction in CA. A total of 93 patients diagnosed with CA who underwent standard and speckle-tracking echocardiography were included. During a median follow-up of 17 (5 to 38) months, 42 patients (45%) died. Conventional tillage disturbs soil structure, increasing the soil's susceptibility to compaction by machinery traffic in sugarcane fields. In this sense, the adoption of reduced tillage or no-tillage practices associated with traffic control has been proposed to preserve the functionality of soil structure, thus reducing soil compaction and plant growth restrictions. A long-term sugarcane experiment was carried out to evaluate the effects of conventional and reduced tillage practices with random ...

Ants, an ecologically successful and numerically dominant group of animals, play key ecological roles as soil engineers, predators, nutrient recyclers, and regulators of plant growth and reproduction in most terrestrial ecosystems. Further, ants are widely used as bioindicators of the ecological impact of land use. We gathered information of ant species in the Atlantic Forest of South America. The ATLANTIC ANTS data set, which is part of the ATLANTIC SERIES data papers, is a compilation of ant records ...

Residents of urban slums suffer from a high burden of zoonotic diseases due to individual, socioeconomic, and environmental factors. Sero-prevalence in the 1,318 participants ranged between 10.0 and 13.3%. We found that contact with environmental sources of contamination, rather than presence of rat reservoirs, is ...

Cytokine Receptor-Like Factor 2 (CRLF2) overexpression occurs in 5-15% of B-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (B-ALL). In ∼50% of these cases, the mechanisms underlying this dysregulation are unknown. IKAROS Family Zinc Finger 1 (IKZF1) is a possible candidate to play a role in this dysregulation since it binds to the CRLF2 promoter region and suppresses its expression. We hypothesised that IKZF1 loss of function, caused by deletions or its short isoforms expression, could be associated with ...
