Impaired functional capacity is common in patients with mitral regurgitation (MR), but the determinants of functional capacity in patients with normal left ventricular (LV) function are unclear. Forty patients with chronic, isolated, nonrheumatic MR with no coronary artery disease underwent exercise echocardiography with continuous expired gas analysis. Cardiac output and regurgitant stroke volume were measured at rest and immediately after exercise by pulsed-wave Doppler echocardiography. For controls, ...

The relationship between SARS-CoV-2 viral load and risk of disease progression remains largely undefined in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Here, we quantify SARS-CoV-2 viral load from participants with a diverse range of COVID-19 disease severity, including those requiring hospitalization, outpatients with mild disease, and individuals with resolved infection. We detected SARS-CoV-2 plasma RNA in 27% of hospitalized participants, and 13% of outpatients diagnosed with COVID-19. Amongst the participants ...

Understanding humoral responses to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is critical for improving diagnostics, therapeutics, and vaccines. Deep serological profiling of 232 coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients and 190 pre–COVID-19 era controls using VirScan revealed more than 800 epitopes in the SARS-CoV-2 proteome, including 10 epitopes likely recognized by neutralizing antibodies. Preexisting antibodies in controls recognized SARS-CoV-2 ORF1, whereas only COVID-19 ...

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) kinetics remain understudied, including the impact of remdesivir. In hospitalized individuals, peak sputum viral load occurred in week 2 of symptoms, whereas viremia peaked within 1 week of symptom-onset, suggesting early systemic seeding of SARS-CoV-2. Remdesivir treatment was associated with faster viral decay.

Abstract Abstract A kinetic study of a few photochromic diarylnaphthopyrans is reported. Upon exposure to ultraviolet radiation, the diarylnaphthopyran derivatives are transformed into open chain, colored forms, which undergo ring closure into the colorless pyran forms. The rate of the ring closure has been determined for a few diarylnaphthopyrans. The effect of substituents on this reaction is briefly investigated.

John Luthern,

The mechanical, elastic and viscoelastic properties of an elastomer are affected by the addition of carbon black. Incorporation of carbon black into an elastomeric matrix increases tensile strength, the complex dynamic modulus and hysteresis among other properties. Dynamic mechanical properties of elastomers filled with polymeric and non-polymeric fillers can be described in terms of certain mechanical models proposed by Takayanagi. In the case of a two-component series model, equations have been ...

In patients evaluated for cardiac transplantation the measured peak oxygen consumption is an objective and powerful predictor of survival that helps to prioritize patients on the transplant list. The 6 minute walk has been shown to correlate with NYHA functional class and to predict morbidity and mortality in patients with congestive heart failure but its correlation with VO2 max has not been established. The easily performed 6 minute walk would be an ideal screening test for congestive heart failure ...

Background In patients with left ventricular dysfunction one of the aims of therapy may be to improve functional capacity. This study compared the improvement of functional capacity in response to medical therapy with that caused by revascularization. Methods Fifty-two patients with severe left ventricular dysfunction were divided into groups with ischemic cardiomyopathy undergoing revascularization (group A, n = 20) or incremental medical treatment (group B, n = 16) and a control group receiving maximal ...
