[(11)C]Palmitate PET can be used to study myocardial fatty acid metabolism in vivo. Several models have been applied to describe and quantify its kinetics, but to date no systematic analysis has been performed to define the most suitable model. In this study a total of 21 plasma input models comprising one to three compartments and up to six free rate constants were compared using statistical analysis of clinical data and simulations. To this end, 14 healthy volunteers were scanned using [(11)C]palmitate, ...

Changes in the nature, scale, and speed of natural resource extraction, especially in the last two decades, have resulted in many new resource extraction areas emerging across the world. By zooming in on Indonesia, this article shows that the underlying causes and consequences of current trends are more complex than portrayed by the rancher-squatter model of frontiers that is still frequently used to explain these developments. We argue that a broadened frontier notion is necessary to address the ...

In the 2000s, the idea of a so-called middle-segment arose in North-West Europe to address the criticism on intensive broiler production systems. Middle-segment systems being indoor housing of slower-growing broiler strains at a stocking density ≤38 kg/m2. Previous literature showed that Dutch middle-segment systems entail a relatively large gain in animal welfare at a relatively low increase in costs, i.e., have a high cost-efficiency. The question is to what extent these findings are applicable ...

Abstract Despite ongoing loss of diversity in freshwater ecosystems, and despite mitigation measures to halt this loss, it is still not clear what ecological drivers underlies lotic biodiversity. A complicating factor is that two of the main drivers, oxygen and temperature, are correlated, and hence studies towards drivers of lotic diversity are confounded. Here, we undertook a systematic review, consisting of both qualitative and quantitative analyses, to disentangle these two drivers. We accessed ...

Animal models are a valuable tool in preclinical research. However, limited predictivity of human biological responses in the conventional models has stimulated the search for reliable preclinical tools that show translational robustness. Here, we used precision-cut kidney slices (PCKS) as a model of renal fibrosis and investigated its predictive capacity for screening the effects of anti-fibrotics. Murine and human PCKS were exposed to TGFβ or PDGF pathway inhibitors with established anti-fibrotic ...

The question of how to organize collaborative problem-solving efforts when collective action is necessary has received considerable attention in the scientific literature. More recently, it is even argued that to organize successful collaborative arrangements, the complex system characteristics of the governance system in which such an arrangement is applied needs to be taken into account. This would trigger a bandwagon effect of mutually reinforcing changes and be successful in overcoming deadlocks. ...

WHAT THIS STUDY ADDS • The prevalence of psycho‐stimulant use among youth in the Netherlands has increased more than eightfold in the period 1996–2006, but in 2006 it is still below the prevalence in the USA. This study aimed at investigating the use of psychosocial interventions and psychotropic co-medication among stimulant-treated children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in relation to the presence of psychiatric co-morbidity. Stimulant users younger than 16 years were identified in 115 pharmacies and a questionnaire was sent to their stimulant prescribing physician. Of 773 questionnaires sent out, 556 were returned and were suitable for analysis (72%). The results are based on ...

Objectives: The aim of this study was to describe current practices around initiation and follow-up care of stimulant treatment among stimulant-treated children in a nationwide survey among parents. Methods: A total of 115 pharmacies detected current stimulant users <16 years old in their pharmacy information system and sent parents a questionnaire regarding their child's stimulant treatment. Results: Parents returned 924 of 1,307 questionnaires (71%). The median age of the stimulant users was 10 ...

Abstract The UK’s fishing industry has contracted considerably since 1972 due to overfishing, increased fuel prices, and implementation of the European Union (EU) Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). Despite this decline affecting the industry at large and the incomes of fishers, some fishers have carried on, or even freshly started or returned to the business. Why have these fishers done so despite the challenges they encounter in the fishing industry? In this article, we investigate why some fishers still ...

In the REAL classification the diffuse large B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHL) are grouped together, because subclassifications are considered to lack both reproducibility and clinical significance. Others, however, claim that patients with an immunoblastic NHL have a worse prognosis than patients with other types of diffuse large B-cell NHL. Therefore, we investigated the prognostic and clinical significance of histological subclassification of diffuse large B-cell NHL in a uniformly treated series ...

Terrace-sized, single-orientation graphene can be grown on top of a carbon buffer layer on silicon carbide by thermal decomposition. Despite its homogeneous appearance, a surprisingly large variation in electron transport properties is observed. Here, we employ Aberration-Corrected Low-Energy Electron Microscopy (AC-LEEM) to study a possible cause of this variability. We characterize the morphology of stacking domains between the graphene and the buffer layer of high-quality samples. Similar to the ...

International labour migration is one of the major issues of our time. Nowadays around 192 million people work outside their country of birth, about three percent of the world’s population. This rapidly increasing phenomenon is examined in a large number of studies on migration. Most of these studies, however, focus on the experiences and practicalities of migrants at the place of destination. In this study, we provide insight into the other side of the migration coin by investigating the experiences, ...

In this article, we investigate the socioeconomic changes that took place on a village level in northeast Thailand during Thaksin Shinawatra's rule as prime minister of Thailand (2001–2006). By comparing data from 1999 and 2008, we show that most households in the research villages have become wealthier. The analysis reveals that household characteristics are not significant in explaining the increase in wealth but that the triggers for change have to be sought on a higher level. This does not necessarily ...

Since the 1970s, animal welfare (AW) in Dutch broiler production has been criticized by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and the general public. Despite the development of production concepts aimed at improving AW, the conventional concept, which satisfied only the minimum legal requirements, remained by far the most dominant one in the Dutch fresh broiler meat market. Then, quite suddenly, in 2014–2015 (i.e., within less than two years), a new broiler concept with increased AW was introduced, ...

Abstract The click reaction between a functionalized trans ‐cyclooctene (TCO) and a tetrazine (Tz) is a compelling method for bioorthogonal conjugation in combination with payload releasing capabilities. However, the synthesis of difunctionalized TCOs remains challenging. As a result, these compounds are poorly accessible, which impedes the development of novel applications. In this work, the scalable and accessible synthesis of a new bioorthogonal difunctionalized TCO is reported in only four single ...
