A simple and reliable method for rapid evaluation of mixtures of phenolic compounds (phenol/chlorophenol, cathecol/phenol, cresol/chlorocresol and phenol/cresol) using a dual amperometric device is described. This new approach is based on the difference between the sensitivity of laccase and tyrosinase for different phenolic compounds. A multichannel potentiostat was used to monitor simultaneously laccase- and tyrosinase-based biosensors, and the data were treated using the partial least squares ( ...

The advent of biopharmaceuticals in modern medicine brought enormous benefits to the treatment of numerous human diseases and improved the well-being of many people worldwide. First introduced in the market in the early 1980s, the number of approved biopharmaceutical products has been steadily increasing, with therapeutic proteins, antibodies, and their derivatives accounting for most of the generated revenues. The success of pharmaceutical biotechnology is closely linked with remarkable developments ...

Polyesters made from 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) have been in the spotlight due to their renewable origins, together with the promising thermal, mechanical, and/or barrier properties. Following the same trend, (nano)composite materials based on FDCA could also generate similar interest, especially because novel materials with enhanced or refined properties could be obtained. This paper presents a case study on the use of furanoate-based polyesters and bacterial cellulose to prepare nanocomposites, ...

Ocimum gratissimum L. (Lamiaceae) and other species of the same genus are used as medicines to treat central nervous system (CNS) diseases, commonly encountered in warm regions of the world. The chemical composition of Ocimum gratissimum essential oil varies according to their chemotypes: timol, eugenol or geraniol. In this study, the essential oil type eugenol was extracted by hydrodistillation in each of the four seasons of the year. Activity upon CNS was evaluated in the open-field and rota-rod ...

The impact of predator dormancy on the population dynamics of phytoplankton-zooplankton in freshwater ecosystems is investigated using a simple model including dormancy, a strategy to avoid extinction. In addition to recently reported chaos-mediated mixed-mode oscillations, as the carrying capacity grows, we find surprisingly wide phases of nonchaos-mediated mixed-mode oscillations to be present well before the onset of chaos in the system. Nonchaos-mediated cascades display spike-adding sequences, ...

Coagulase-negative Staphylococcus spp. (CNS) has been associated with primary bloodstream infections and implanted medical devices. Its importance is increasing due to the acquisition of resistance to oxacillin (Oxa) and, recently, resistance to mupirocin (Mup). Mupirocin, a topical antimicrobial, has been used in the prevention of staphylococci catheter colonization. Susceptibility to Oxa and Mup was analyzed by different testing methods in clinical CNS isolates. Among 112 CNS strains, 69 (61.6%) were ...

The presence of the ileS-2 gene, responsible for mupirocin resistance, in clinical isolates of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus was determined by multiplex polymerase chain reaction. Three pairs of primers were used, which yielded specific fragments of femA (encoding a unique feature of S. aureus), mecA (encoding resistance to methicillin) and ileS-2 genes. The multiplex polymerase chain reaction system is an easy and time-saving technique that, together with a rapid method for DNA extraction ...

The conversion of native vegetation (NV) into agricultural land by clearing and tillage disrupts the soil structure, and depletes soil organic carbon (SOC) pool. The data on changes in SOC pools are needed to enhance scientific knowledge regarding the effects of land use and no-till (NT) systems on soil fertility, agronomic productivity, and soil C sink capacity. Thus, the objective of this study was to quantify changes in SOC fractions due to conversion of NV to agricultural land, and to assess the ...

We report a startling mosaic-like organization of stability phases found in the low-frequency limit of a driven Brusselator. Such phases correspond to periodic oscillations having a constant number of spikes per period. The mosaic is free from chaotic oscillations and is formed by an apparently infinite cascade of oscillations whose number of spikes grow without bound. Wide windows free from chaos but supporting unbounded quantities of complex oscillations are potentially of interest to operate ...

Oscillators have widespread applications in micro- and nanomechanical devices, in lasers of various types, in chemical and biochemical models, among others. However, applications are normally marred by the presence of chaos, requiring expensive control techniques to bypass it. Here, we show that the low-frequency limit of driven systems, a poorly explored region, is a wide chaos-free zone. Specifically, for a popular model of micro- and nanomechanical devices and for the Brusselator, we report the ...

Abstract Amazonian forests are extraordinarily diverse, but the estimated species richness is very much debated. Here, we apply an ensemble of parametric estimators and a novel technique that includes conspecific spatial aggregation to an extended database of forest plots with up-to-date taxonomy. We show that the species abundance distribution of Amazonia is best approximated by a logseries with aggregated individuals, where aggregation increases with rarity. By averaging several methods to estimate ...

The Amazonian floodplains harbor highly diverse wetland forests, with angiosperms adapted to survive extreme floods and droughts. About 14% of the Amazon Basin is covered by floodplains, which are fundamental to river productivity, biogeochemical cycling and trophic flow, and have been subject to human occupation since Pre-Colombian times. The botanical knowledge about these forests is still incomplete, and current forest degradation rates are much higher than the rate of new botanical surveys. ...
