Background Occult hepatitis B virus ( HBV ) infection ( OBI ) is identified in 1:1000 to 1:50,000 E uropean blood donations. This study intended to determine the infectivity of blood products from OBI donors. Study Design and Methods Recipients of previous donations from OBI donors were investigated through lookback (systematic retrieval of recipients) or traceback (triggered by clinical cases). Serologic and genomic studies were undertaken on consenting donors and recipients. Multiple variables potentially ...

The effect of the addition of small amounts of rare earths (Ln=La, Ce, Nd and Gd) to alumina supported copper-cobalt spinel oxide on the catalysts efficiency in CO and CH4 oxidation and in NO decomposition was investigated. Samples of Ln/CuCo/Al catalyst were prepared and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), H2-temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR), ...

A growing body of evidence points to a strong overlap between selective mutism (SM) and social anxiety disorder in children, specifically with regard to characteristics such as social reticence and anxiety. Yet few studies have directly compared these populations, especially with young children. This study compared 25 children (aged 3–7 years) with a primary diagnosis of SM, 17 children with a primary diagnosis of social anxiety disorder and 15 non-clinical controls using interviews and questionnaires ...

Sharing and developing digital educational resources and open educational resources has been proposed as a way to harmonize and improve clinical pharmacology and therapeutics (CPT) education in European medical schools. Previous research, however, has shown that there are barriers to the adoption and implementation of open educational resources. The aim of this study was to determine perceived opportunities and barriers to the use and creation of open educational resources among European CPT teachers ...

The present study evaluated the impact of doxorubicin encapsulation in chitosan-alginate nanoparticles on its stability, cytotoxic potential in multidrug resistant lymphoma cells (L5178 MDR1) and toxicity in H9c2 cardioblasts. The results indicated that the encapsulation stabilized the drug against degradation due to its inner location in nanoparticles as suggested by thermogravimetric and X-ray diffraction analyses. Further, the encapsulated doxorubicin was significantly more cytotoxic to L5178 ...

Purpose To evaluate and compare the efficacy of a lipid-based lubricant eyedrop formulation (hydroxypropyl guar/propylene glycol/phospholipid [HPG/PG/PL]) with preservative-free saline for the treatment of dry eye. Methods This was a prospective, multicenter, randomized, single-masked, parallel-group phase 4 clinical study. Patients ≥18 years diagnosed with dry eye received 1 drop of saline 4 times daily (QID) for 15 days during a run-in phase, followed by randomization. Patients then instilled HPG/ ...

Lomefloxacin (LF) is interesting as a model molecule from a safety point of view because of its high potential for serious adverse drug effects (i.e. phototoxic reactions). In this study, MCM-41 mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MCM-41) were loaded with lomefloxacin, aiming to overcome the drug's intrinsic cytotoxicity. The good biocompatibility of the empty drug carrier (0.1–1.0 mg/ml) was established by the absence of red blood cell lysis (hemolysis assay). The cytotoxicity of empty MCM-41 and lomefloxacin- ...

Abstract This paper describes the preparation of a new type of hybrid material suitable to be used for the amendment of wastewaters laden with Ni ions relying on two purification principles, mechanical and adsorption. The membranes were prepared using as first component copolymers of acrylonitrile with vinyl acetate, acrylic acid or methacrylic acid. The second component of the developed membranes consisted of powdered activated carbon (PAC), of natural or synthetic origin, used in a content of either ...

Conversion of the easily available trans -2-oxoimidazolidine-4-carboxylic acid 1 to the corresponding imidazolidines 8 gives after one-step oxidation and ring cleavage the diamino acid 2 in high yield. The difference in the trans -vicinal couplings for the hydrogen-bonded and nonbonded compounds suggests different ring geometry as a result of the balancing effect of the N 1 substituent on the "allylic strain".

(1) Background: In silico approaches to rational drug design are among the fastest evolving ones. Depending on the available structural information for the biomacromolecule and the small molecule, the in silico methods are classified as ligand- and structure-based. The latter predict ligand–receptor binding using 3D structures of both molecules, whose computational simulation is referred to as molecular docking. It aims at estimating the binding affinity (approximated by scoring function) and the ...

Purpose: Transgender women are disproportionately affected by HIV and are underutilizing preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP). The lower uptake of PrEP by transgender women may be, in part, owing to the perception that taking PrEP may lower the efficacy of gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) or to provider concerns that GAHT may lower the efficacy of PrEP. Methods: DISCOVER was a randomized, double-blind, noninferiority trial comparing emtricitabine (FTC, F) and tenofovir alafenamide (F/TAF) versus emtricitabine ...

Recently, chemically synthesized short interfering RNA (siRNA) duplexes have been used with success for gene silencing. Chemical modification is desired for therapeutic applications to improve biostability and pharmacokinetic properties; chemical modification may also provide insight into the mechanism of silencing. siRNA duplexes containing the 2,4-difluorotoluyl ribonucleoside (rF) were synthesized to evaluate the effect of noncanonical nucleoside mimetics on RNA interference. 5′-Modification of ...

The preparation, purification and characterization of the three singly, three doubly and one triply substituted derivatives of cytochrome c modified by pyridoxal phosphate (PLP) at lysine residues are reported. The PLP positions in PLP derivatives were determined by the amino acid analysis and sequence of PLP peptides. The results identified the lysine at position 86 in one of the singly substituted, lysine 79 in the other singly substituted and lysines 86 and 79 in the third doubly substituted cytochrome ...

Summary Background Effective two-drug regimens could decrease long-term drug exposure and toxicity with HIV-1 antiretroviral therapy (ART). We therefore aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a two-drug regimen compared with a three-drug regimen for the treatment of HIV-1 infection in ART-naive adults. Methods We conducted two identically designed, multicentre, double-blind, randomised, non-inferiority, phase 3 trials: GEMINI-1 and GEMINI-2. Both studies were done at 192 centres in 21 countries.
