Background Sand fly saliva contains molecules that modify the host's hemostasis and immune responses. Nevertheless, the role played by this saliva in the induction of key elements of inflammatory responses, such as lipid bodies (LB, also known as lipid droplets) and eicosanoids, has been poorly investigated. LBs are cytoplasmic organelles involved in arachidonic acid metabolism that form eicosanoids in response to inflammatory stimuli. In this study, we assessed the role of salivary gland sonicate ( ...

Mutations in recently identified genes on chromosomes 2 and 3 seem to be responsible for repair errors (RER+) throughout the genome. This novel genetic mechanism was first reported in hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer syndrome and in cancers that are characteristic of this syndrome, such as carcinomas of the right colon, stomach and endometrium. We investigated the frequency of RER+ phenotype in a series of 34 sporadic gastric carcinomas, in an attempt to see if the RER+ cases displayed ...

Based upon the results of a thorough study of 213 patients submitted to potentially curative resection we propose the following histologic classification of gastric carcinoma: isolated-cell carcinoma (6.6%), glandular carcinoma (41.8%), solid carcinoma, (13.1 %) and mixed carcinoma (38.S%). Half of the mixed carcinomas displayed a predominant isolated-cell pattern, whereas in the other half the isolated-cells were a minor component (the predominant component being either glandular, solid, or both). The ...

Abstract Background Triple therapy is the gold standard treatment for Helicobacter pylori eradication from the human stomach, but increased resistance to clarithromycin became the main factor of treatment failure. Until now, fastidious culturing methods are generally the method of choice to assess resistance status. In this study, a new genotypic method to detect clarithromycin resistance in clinical samples, based on fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) using a set of peptide nucleic acid probes ( ...

Summary Background First‐degree relatives ( FDR s) of early‐onset gastric carcinoma ( EOGC ) patients are at increased risk of cancer development. OLGA / OLGIM (Operative Link on Gastritis/Intestinal Metaplasia Assessment) classifications have been proposed for the identification of individuals at high risk of gastric cancer development. Aim To estimate the prevalence and severity of premalignant conditions and lesions in FDR s of EOGC patients. Methods A case–control study was conducted encompassing 103 ...

Epithelial-cadherin (Ecad) deregulation affects cell-cell adhesion and results in increased invasiveness of distinct human carcinomas. In gastric cancer, loss of Ecad expression is a common event and is associated with disease aggressiveness and poor prognosis. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the invasive process associated to Ecad dysfunction are far from understood. We hypothesized that deregulation of cell-matrix interactions could play an important role during this process. Thus, ...

Background & Aims: High expression of sialyl-Lex in tumors of different organs correlates with hematogenous metastasis and adverse outcome. Dimeric sialyl-Lex expression in gastric carcinoma was evaluated, and its prognostic significance within this setting was determined. Methods: Dimeric sialyl-Lex immunohistochemical expression in 97 gastric carcinomas was analyzed using the FH6 monoclonal antibody. The effects of sorghum flour fractions (whole and decorticated flours and bran) were evaluated for oxidative stress and obesity parameters in diet-induced obese rats. Compared to high fat-fructose groups, sorghum flour fractions reduced liver fat and whole sorghum flour decreased fasting glucose, improved glucose tolerance, insulin resistance and reduced insulin secretion. Sorghum showed a slight improvement in antioxidant status. Animals fed with sorghum flour fractions improved liver CAT, GRd and ...

Tumor growth is accompanied with dramatic changes in the cellular glycome, such as the aberrant expression of complex branched N-glycans. However, the role of this protumoral N-glycan in immune evasion and whether its removal contributes to enhancement of immune recognition and to unleashing an antitumor immune response remain elusive. We demonstrated that branched N-glycans are used by colorectal cancer cells to escape immune recognition, instructing the creation of immunosuppressive networks through ...

Polymer-matrix composites are widely used in engineering applications. Yet, environmental factors impact their macroscale fatigue and creep performances significantly, owing to several mechanisms acting at the microstructure level. Herein, we analyse the effects of water uptake that are responsible for swelling and, over time and in enough quantity, for hydrolysis. Seawater, due to a combination of high salinity and pressures, low temperature and biotic media present, also contributes to the acceleration ...

Paclitaxel (PTX) is widely used as a first-line treatment for patients with metastatic breast cancer; however, its poor water solubility represents a major challenge for parenteral administration. The encapsulation of the PTX in drug-delivery systems with high affinity for tumor sites could improve the uptake and increase its therapeutic efficacy. In this work, long-circulating and pH-sensitive PEG-coated (SpHL-PTX) and PEG-folate-coated liposomes containing PTX (SpHL-FT-PTX) were prepared, and the ...
