New materials obtained through the incorporation of meso-tetraarylporphyrins, bearing phenyl or pentafluorophenyl groups at the meso positions with or without acid groups, in chitosan films have been prepared and characterized in detail. The efficiency of these porphyrinic-chitosan films (PS-CF) to prevent Listeria innocua attachment and subsequent biofilm formation was evaluated under different irradiation protocols (dark, light, light + dark, dark + light). All tested porphyrinic-chitosan films were ...

Multifunctional luminescent nanomaterials based on mesoporous silica SBA-16 doped with a ring-opening rhodamine derivative (RhNHS) or with a cationic porphyrin bearing imidazolium substituents (Porph) were successfully obtained and characterized. The non-immobilized Porph leads to a selective colorimetric detection for Cu2+, Pb2+ and Hg2+ in HEPES buffer at pH 7, producing colour changes from violet to pink, green and brown, detecting the minimal amount of 3.6, 5.8 and 3.8 ppm by absorption, respectively. ...

Porphyrin derivatives present an excellent ability to act as photosensitizers (PS) in photodynamic therapy (PDT). Ruthenium and iridium complexes, mainly containing pyridine ligands, also have been highlighted as potential PS for PDT, due to their photochemical and photophysical properties. The combination of porphyrin derivatives with iridium or ruthenium ions may create singular features and, consequently, improve the PDT effect. In this paper, we report the synthesis, characterization and efficacy ...

A Bacillus amyloliquefaciens strain isolated from soil produced xylanolytic enzymes in the extracellular medium when grown on xylan and nitrate. No cellulase activity was detected. Xylanase was purified from the culture supernatant in three steps which comprised anion-exchange adsorption, ammonium sulfate precipitation, and hydrophobic interaction chromatography. The pure enzyme appeared as two close protein bands on SDS-PAGE with molecular weights of 18.4 and 19.6 kD, respectively. The molecular ...

NAD‐glycohydrolase from conidia of Neurospora crassa was purified by affinity chromatography, using 4‐methylnicotinamide adenine dinucleotide as ligand immobilized onto Sepharose through a hydrophilic spacer arm. The pure enzyme is a glycoprotein with an isoelectric point of 5.5 and a molecular weight of 33000 as determined by sodium dodecylsulphate gel electrophoresis. The specific activity is the highest so far found for NAD‐glycohydrolases and in various aspects the enzyme is different from that ...

The present paper examined the applicability of a holistic stochastic dynamic methodology (SDM) in predicting the tendencies of simple ecological indicators as a response to the changes in agricultural hedgerow networks. Although considerable effort has been made to identify appropriate agri-environmental indicators, yet most of them are far too complex to be comprehensively measured and quantified by non-specialists. The ecological integrity of the typical hedgerows can be partly assessed by the ...

The exon 26A is a rarely expressed human elastin exon that codes for a hydrophilic and charged amino acid sequence. The functional role of elastin containing this additional sequence is unknown. On phenilephrine-preconstricted rat thoracic aortic rings the peptides LSPELREGD and REGD cause dose-dependent relaxation in the concentration range from 10(- ...

One of the unusual properties of elastin is its ability to coacervate, which has been proposed to play an important role in the alignment of monomeric elastin for cross-linking into the polymeric elastin matrix. The temperature at which this transition takes place depends on several factors including protein concentration, ionic strength, and pH. Previously, polypeptide sequences encoded by different exons of the human tropoelastin gene have been analyzed for their ability to coacervate and to self- ...

The first remarkable property associated to metallophthalocyanines (MPcs) was their chemical “inertness”, which made and make them very attractive as stable and durable industrial dyes. Nevertheless, their rich redox chemistry was also explored in the last decades, making available a solid and detailed knowledge background for further studies on the suitability of MPcs as redox catalysts. An overlook of MPcs and their catalytic activity with dioxygen as oxidants will be discussed here with a special ...

A simple procedure is described for the screening and isolation of xylanolytic bacteria, able to degrade hemicellulose. Bagasse hemicellulose was purified, cross‐linked with green dye for use as indicator, and used in a Petri dish assay for the determination of xylanolytic activity. Hydrolysis of the substrate causes the formation of transparent halos around bacterial colonies. The screening procedure was used to select thermoresistant bacteria. The four best isolates were characterized and classified ...

Staphylococcus epidermidis remains the predominant pathogen in prosthetic-device infections. Ventricular assist devices, a recently developed form of therapy for end-stage congestive heart failure, have had considerable success. The transcutaneous driveline entry site acts as a potential portal of entry for bacteria, allowing development of either localized or systemic infections. A novel in vitro ...
