Background: Osteoarthritis of the knee (kOA) is a chronic, progressive, degenerative health condition that contribute to the imbalance between the synthesis and destruction of articular cartilage. Recently, whole body vibration (WBV) training has been recommended as an effective alternative for strength training in elderly people and various physiological effects are obtained in response to exercise performed on a vibratory platform, such as an increase in muscle activation and improved muscle performance. ...

Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) often present with sarcopenia, a condition marked by the loss in quality and quantity of muscle mass that can affect the strength of respiratory muscles. COPD and sarcopenia are also independently associated with oxidative stress. This study aimed to investigate whether oxidative stress biomarkers and respiratory muscle strength are associated with sarcopenia in COPD patients. In a cross-sectional study, 86 elderly subjects, including subjects ...

Cooperatives are considered potential organizational vehicles for society’s development due to their multiple objectives and diverse roles. Therefore, this study aims to understand which factors associated with agricultural cooperatives can impact on society. The research adopted a quantitative methodology with the data-collecting instrument being a questionnaire applied to 194 cooperators belonging to wine cooperatives in the Dão region of Portugal. The results indicate that agricultural cooperatives ...

Abstract There is a pressing need for simple and reliable risk transfer mechanisms that can pay out quickly after natural disasters without delays caused by loss estimation, and the need for long historical claims records. One such approach, known as parametric insurance, pays out when a key hazard variable exceeds a predetermined threshold. However, this approach to catastrophe risk, based on making deterministic binary predictions of loss occurrence, is susceptible to basis risk (mismatch between ...

The speed of sound in the protic ionic liquids (PILs) N-methyl-2-hydroxyethylammonium butyrate (m2HEAB) and N-methyl-2-hydroxyethylammonium pentanoate (m2HEAP) was measured at atmospheric pressure, and over the range of temperatures T = (293.15 to 343.15) K. The speed of sound and density of aqueous mixtures of the ionic liquid were also determined throughout the entire concentration range, within the (298.15 to 333.15) K temperature range and at atmospheric pressure. The excess molar volume, excess isentropic ...

Abstract. One of the necessary components to perform catastrophe risk modelling is information on the buildings at risk, such as their spatial location, geometry, height, occupancy type and other characteristics. This is commonly referred to as the exposure model or data set. When modelling large areas, developing exposure data sets with the relevant information about every individual building is not practicable. Thus, census data at coarse spatial resolutions are often used as the starting point ...

Abstract. Methodologies to estimate economic flood damages are increasingly important for flood risk assessment and management. In this work, we present a new synthetic flood damage model based on a component-by-component analysis of physical damage to buildings. The damage functions are designed using an expert-based approach with the support of existing scientific and technical literature, loss adjustment studies, and damage surveys carried out for past flood events in Italy. The model structure ...

Some possible explanations for the fact are hypothesized regarding the characteristics of the ...
