A series of 82 consecutive cases of mucinous carcinomas of the female breast was investigated for their clinical, morphological, and histochemical features and for the influence of some tumor characteristics on its prognosis. Two groups, a "pure" subtype (n = 58) and a "mixed" subtype (n = 24), were considered, according to the absence or the presence of concomitant areas with typical infiltrating ductal carcinoma. Eighty patients were followed with an average of 7.4 years. The actuarial survival was 58. ...

The optic disk is a region of the retina consisting mainly of ganglion cell axons and blood vessels, which generates a visual scotoma known as the blind spot (BS). Information present in the surroundings of the BS can be used to complete the missing information. However, the neuronal mechanisms underlying these perceptual phenomena are poorly understood. We investigate the topography of the BS representation (BSR) in cortical area V1 of the capuchin monkey, using single and multiple electrodes. Receptive ...

Ovarian tissue cryopreservation represents a valid strategy to preserve ovarian function in patients with a high risk of premature ovarian failure. We present a case of ovarian tissue cryopreservation carried out in an 18-year-old woman after a laparotomy for left adnexal mass with left adnexectomy. Congenital absence of the right ovary was observed during surgery. To preserve fertility, rescue cryopreservation of ovarian tissue was carried out under extreme conditions (without adopting the standard ...

Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is a genetic disorder characterized by homozygous hemoglobin S (Hb S), chronic hemolytic anemia and painful episodes.1 Patients with SCA usually require red blood cell (RBC) transfusions to manage complications and to reduce morbidity during surgical procedures.1 One possible complication of multiple transfusions is alloimmunization, which occurs due to the recognition of foreign surface antigens on transfused RBC by antibodies produced by the recipient (alloantibodies).2,3 ...

We investigated the color vision pattern in Cebus apella monkeys by means of electroretinogram measurements (ERG) and genetic analysis. Based on ERG we could discriminate among three types of dichromatic males. Among females, this classification is more complex and requires additional genetic analysis. We found five among 10 possible different phenotypes, two trichromats and three dichromats. We also found that Cebus present a new allele with spectral peak near 552nm, with the amino acid combination ...
