Summary Bacteriophages recognize and bind specific receptors to infect suitable hosts. Bacteriophage SPP1 targets at least two receptors of the Bacillus subtilis cell envelope, the glucosylated wall teichoic acids and the membrane protein YueB. Here, we identify a key virion protein for YueB binding and for the trigger of DNA ejection. Extracts from B. subtilis ‐infected cells applied to a YueB affinity matrix led to preferential capturing of gp21 from SPP1. To assess the significance of this interaction, ...

Importance Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of morbidity in cancer survivors, which makes strategies aimed at mitigating cardiovascular risk a subject of major contemporary importance. Objective To assess whether a center-based cardiac rehabilitation (CBCR) framework compared with usual care encompassing community-based exercise training (CBET) is superior for cardiorespiratory fitness improvement and cardiovascular risk factor control among cancer survivors with high cardiovascular risk. ...

The objective of this study is to evaluate the spatial and temporal dynamics of land use in the city of Leiria, which is located in central Portugal, and its relation to the planning framework. The analysis is based on land-use change recognition in the period 1958–2011, calculation of the stability grade indicator, the losses and gains between classes, and the rate of artificialization. The results show an increase of the artificial areas, namely in continuous and discontinuous urban fabric, contrasting ...

This work presents a volumetric approach to reconstruct and characterise 3D models of external anatomical structures from 2D images. Volumetric methods represent the final volume using a finite set of 3D geometric primitives, usually designed as voxels. Thus, from an image sequence acquired around the object to reconstruct, the images are calibrated and the 3D models of the referred object are built using different approaches of volumetric methods. The final goal is to analyse the accuracy of the ...

Calibration of the relationship between height and phase is of uttermost importance to perform accurate 3D measurements in phase measurement profilometry. This work reports a different approach to this problem by first looking at the analytical expression for this relationship and determining the regime spanned by the fringe analysis method. The conclusions thus ascertained, amply justify confronting the analytical expression with a simple normalization procedure of the experimental data, with a ...

We have observed by flow cytometric analysis that a small but consistent percentage of circulating hemocytes in phases S, G2 and M of the cell cycle can be detected in Penaeus japonicus. Significantly increased percentages of proliferating hemocytes (~ three-fold increase) were observed after stimulation by lipopolysaccharide (LPS), p43 (an immunosuppressive lymphocyte mitogenic protein produced by Candida albicans) and a combination of LPS and p43. Moreover, an ~ six-fold increase in the percentage of ...

Abstract The purpose of these experiments was to determine in normotensive rats the role of endogenous bradykinin, prostaglandins, and nitric oxide in glucose metabolism and blood pressure response to hyperinsulinemia. Normotensive Wistar rats were treated with two different bradykinin antagonists, indomethacin or N ω -nitro- l -arginine methyl ester, concurrently with a euglycemic clamp with insulin infusion rates of 3 or 6 mU/kg per minute. Glucose uptake, steady-state plasma insulin levels, and ...

To study if the severity of hypertension could be associated with disturbances of the autoregulation of renal blood flow and glomerular filtration, we compared the renal hemodynamic and functional responses to acute blood pressure reductions of a group of patients with moderate essential hypertension (n = 10) with those of a group of patients with severe hypertension (n = 10). Blood pressure was reduced to normal levels by a stepwise infusion of sodium nitroprusside, and effective renal blood flow (by ...

The virulent Bacillus subtilis bacteriophage SPP1 encapsidates its DNA by a headful mechanism. Analyzing phage missense mutants, which package less DNA than SPP1 wild-type but show no other affected properties, we have identified a gene whose product is involved in the sizing of phage DNA during maturation. Characterization of this gene and its product provides an experimental access to the poorly understood mechanism of DNA sizing in packaging. The gene (gene 6 or siz) was cloned and sequenced. ...

Feature detectors have long been one of the touchstones of image processing. Most vision tasks are entirely dependent on the accurate determination of fiducial marks on images, which ultimately led to a quest for methods able to detect feature locations with high resolution. We report the development of an intensity-based subpixel corner detector based on the two-dimensional (2-D) Hilbert transform. Extensive testing of both accuracy and precision with live images finds the method adequate for subpixel ...
