We analyze within a mean-field approach the stationary states of the kinetic Ising model described by the Glauber stochastic dynamics and subject to a time-dependent oscillating external field. We have found that the magnetization of the system oscillates in time around a certain value that is zero at high temperatures or large field amplitudes and nonzero at low temperatures and small field amplitudes. The transition from one regime to the other, which corresponds to a spontaneous symmetry breaking, ...

We have analyzed a self-organization occurring in an open ferromagnetic Ising system on a square lattice in contact with a heat bath and subject to an external source of energy. The system follows a stochastic dynamics composed of two processes: one of the Glauber type, which simulates the contact of the system with the heat bath, and the other of the Kawasaki type, which simulates the continuous flux of energy into the system. When the flux is small, the stationary state is paramagnetic at high ...

Noise is an intrinsic feature of population dynamics and plays a crucial role in oscillations called phase-forgetting quasicycles by converting damped into sustained oscillations. This function of noise becomes evident when considering Langevin equations whose deterministic part yields only damped oscillations. We formulate here a consistent and systematic approach to population dynamics, leading to a Fokker-Planck equation and the associate Langevin equations in accordance with this conceptual ...

The authors consider a kinetic Ising model with ferromagnetic interactions that evolves in time according to two competing Glauber dynamics at different temperatures. The steady states of this non-equilibrium model are studied by using a dynamic pair approximation. When the temperatures are low enough the system orders in a ferromagnetic state, but if one of the temperatures is allowed to be negative the system may have an antiferromagnetic order. They obtain the phase diagram for the case of a ...

We study stochastic sandpile models with a height restriction in one and two dimensions. A site can topple if it has a height of two, as in Manna's model, but, in contrast to previously studied sandpiles, here the height (or number of particles per site), cannot exceed two. This yields a considerable simplification over the unrestricted case, in which the number of states per site is unbounded. Two toppling rules are considered: in one, the particles are redistributed independently, while the other ...

Abstract The aim of the present work is to study the effect of school satisfaction on school achievement on each other, and the moderate effects of school assets and internal assets on these relations. The sample included 494 adolescents with special educational needs. Results showed that school satisfaction and academic achievement are associated. The analyses conducted to evaluate the moderate effects of school assets and internal over school satisfaction and academic achievement had only revealed ...

We analyze the irreversibility and the entropy production in nonequilibrium interacting particle systems described by a Fokker-Planck equation by the use of a suitable master equation representation. The irreversible character is provided either by nonconservative forces or by the contact with heat baths at distinct temperatures. The expression for the entropy production is deduced from a general definition, which is related to the probability of a trajectory in phase space and its time reversal, ...

Two stochastic epidemic lattice models, the susceptible-infected-recovered and the susceptible-exposed-infected models, are studied on a Cayley tree of coordination number k. The spreading of the disease in the former is found to occur when the infection probability b is larger than bc = k/2(k − 1). In the latter, which is equivalent to a dynamic site percolation model, the spreading occurs when the infection probability p is greater than pc = 1/(k − 1). We set up and solve the time evolution equations ...

A series of brominated mono-methano[60]fullerene malonate derivatives (two diads and one triad) are investigated for intramolecular and external heavy-atom effects on their fluorescence. Significant internal and external heavy-atom effects are observed in the three cases. It is shown that the internal effect doubles when going from the diads to the triad. In bromobenzene and in iodobenzene, the external effect is predominant, and diads and triad behave identically.

We present a stochastic approach to nonequilibrium thermodynamics based on the expression of the entropy production rate advanced by Schnakenberg for systems described by a master equation. From the microscopic Schnakenberg expression we get the macroscopic bilinear form for the entropy production rate in terms of fluxes and forces. This is performed by placing the system in contact with two reservoirs with distinct sets of thermodynamic fields and by assuming an appropriate form for the transition ...

We study the entropy production rate in systems described by linear Langevin equations, containing mixed even and odd variables under time reversal. Exact formulas are derived for several important quantities in terms only of the means and covariances of the random variables in question. These include the total rate of change of the entropy, the entropy production rate, the entropy flux rate and the three components of the entropy production. All equations are cast in a way suitable for large-scale ...

We introduce and analyze numerically a nonequilibrium model with a conserved dynamics which is a realization of the contact process in an ensemble of constant particle number. The model possesses just one process in which particles jump around landing only on empty sites next to an existing particle. Particles are not allowed to land on a vacant site surrounded by empty sites. In contrast with the ordinary contact process, the present model does not have an absorbing state. In spite of lacking an ...

We develop the stochastic approach to thermodynamics based on stochastic dynamics, which can be discrete (master equation) and continuous (Fokker-Planck equation), and on two assumptions concerning entropy. The first is the definition of entropy itself and the second the definition of entropy production rate, which is non-negative and vanishes in thermodynamic equilibrium. Based on these assumptions, we study interacting systems with many degrees of freedom in equilibrium or out of thermodynamic equilibrium ...

We study numerically the short-time critical dynamical behavior of a family of nonequilibrium models with up-down symmetry. Our numerical results show that these models, which include the Glauber dynamics as a particular case, present short-time universality. The exponent $\ensuremath{\theta}$ is calculated from the early time behavior of the time correlation of the total magnetization $〈m(t)m(0)〉$ by starting from an initial state with zero correlation length and zero magnetization.

We introduce a procedure that allows us to obtain nontrivial stationary distributions of finite-size models with absorbing states. Two models are studied: the contact process and the sandpile model with height restriction. To avoid the permanence of the system in the absorbing state we create a small perturbation that drives the system out of the absorbing state. In the former model a particle is created, in the latter an active site is created. The stationary distributions around the critical point ...
