This paper investigates the factors associated with knowledge, attitudes, autonomy, and constraints in the management of menstruation in three districts of Uttar Pradesh. The paper uses data collected from 1,800 post-menarche adolescent girls under a baseline study commissioned by UNICEF in 2012 for a social and behaviour change project, called 'Girls Today, Women Tomorrow', on menstrual management. The findings suggest that about half of the girls did not have information or knowledge about menstruation. ...

The detection of contaminants in food products after packaging by a non-invasive technique is a serious need for companies operating in the food industry. In recent years, many technologies have been investigated and developed to overcome the intrinsic drawbacks of the currently employed techniques, such as X-rays and metal detector, and to offer more appropriate solutions with respect to techniques developed in the academic domain in terms of acquisition speed, cost, and the penetration depth (infrared, ...

This paper proposes an efficient and fast method to create large datasets for machine learning algorithms applied to brain stroke classification via microwave imaging systems. The proposed method is based on the distorted Born approximation and linearization of the scattering operator, in order to minimize the time to generate the large datasets needed to train the machine learning algorithms. The method is then applied to a microwave imaging system, which consists of twenty-four antennas conformal ...

Resuscitation of septic patients regarding goals, monitoring aspects and therapy is highly variable. Our aim was to characterize cardiovascular and fluid management of sepsis in Argentina, a low and middle-income country (LMIC). Furthermore, we sought to test whether the utilization of dynamic tests of fluid responsiveness, as a guide for fluid therapy after initial resuscitation in patients with persistent or recurrent hypoperfusion, was associated with decreased mortality.Secondary analysis of ...

The state of limited resource settings that Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has created globally should be taken seriously into account especially in healthcare sector. In oncofertility, patients should receive their fertility preservation treatments urgently even in limited resource settings before initiation of anticancer therapy. Therefore, it is very crucial to learn more about oncofertility practice in limited resource settings such as in developing countries that suffer often from shortage ...

Socioeconomic variables impact health outcomes but have rarely been evaluated in critical illness. Low- and middle-income countries bear the highest burden of sepsis and also have significant health inequities. In Argentina, public hospitals serve the poorest segment of the population, while private institutions serve patients with health coverage. Our objective was to analyze differences in mortality between public and private hospitals, using Sepsis-3 definitions. This is a multicenter, prospective ...

The axon initial segment (AIS) is the site of action potential generation and a locus of activity-dependent homeostatic plasticity. A multimeric complex of sodium channels, linked via a cytoskeletal scaffold of ankyrin G and beta IV spectrin to submembranous actin rings, mediates these functions. The mechanisms that specify the AIS complex to the proximal axon and underlie its plasticity remain poorly understood. Here we show phosphorylated myosin light chain (pMLC), an activator of contractile myosin ...

Streptococcosis caused by Streptococcus agalactiae is one of the most important diseases in the tilapia aquaculture industry. The role of the capsule of Streptococcus agalactiae in adherence to fish surfaces has not been evaluated and the mechanism of capsular regulation during adhesion has not been described. The study of intraspecific variation of acoustic signals and its relationship with genetic divergence is important for understanding the origin of divergence in communication systems. We studied geographical variation in the acoustic structure of advertisement calls from five populations of the four-eyed frog, Pleurodema thaul, and its relationship with the genetic divergence among these populations. By analyzing temporal and spectral parameters of the advertisement calls, we report that the signals ...

Chronic inflammation is a characteristic of Alzheimer's disease (AD). An interaction associated with the risk of AD has been reported between polymorphisms in the regulatory regions of the genes for the pro-inflammatory cytokine, interleukin-6 (IL-6, gene: IL6), and the anti-inflammatory cytokine, interleukin-10 (IL-10, gene: IL10). We examined this interaction in the Epistasis Project, a collaboration of 7 AD research groups, contributing DNA samples from 1,757 cases of AD and 6,295 controls. We replicated ...

Summary The aim of this work is to examine the wellbore pressure behavior in reservoirs with single-phase non-Darcy flow conditions produced at a constant sandface rate. The transient flow period is analyzed by means of results generated with a finite difference model. Analytical expressions of pressure drop and its semilogarithmic slope are presented for the first time. These equations contain the laminar flow solution as a particular case, and they provide means to evaluate the total skin factor. ...

Abstract Background Breastmilk is a dynamic fluid whose initial function is to provide the most adapted nutrition to the neonate. Additional attributes have been recently ascribed to breastmilk, with the evidence of a specific microbiota and the presence of various components of the immune system, such as cytokines and leukocytes. The composition of breastmilk varies through time, according to the health status of mother and child, and altogether contributes to the future health of the infant. Obesity ...

Sexual selection is one of the main evolutionary forces that drive signal evolution. In previous studies, we have found out that males of Pleurodema thaul, a frog with an extensive latitudinal distribution in Chile, emits advertisement calls that show remarkable variation among populations. In addition, this variation is related to intense inter-male acoustic competition (intra-sexual selection) occurring within each population. However, the extent to which female preferences contribute to the signal ...
