Stannous chloride (SnCl2) is frequently used in nuclear medicine as a reducing agent to label many radiopharmaceutical products with technetium-99m (99mTc). The aim of the present paper was to study the role of DNA repair genes in the repair of SnCl2-induced damage, using mutant strains of Escherichia coli lacking one or more DNA repair genes. Our results suggest that the product of the xthA gene, exonuclease III, is required for the repair of lesions induced by SnCl2. We further investigated the ...

This paper presents the results of a petrographic and diagenetic study of the laminated limestones of the upper part of the Aptian to Albian Crato Formation, northeast of Brazil. The applied techniques were optical microscopy, cathodoluminescence and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled to a wavelength-dispersive spectrometer (WDS). Petrographic analysis has revealed that most of the laminated limestones are calcilutites with a dominance of a micritic matrix, indicating a low-energy depositional ...

Background and Objectives: The effects of warm-up in athletic success have gained strong attention in recent studies. There is, however, a wide gap in awareness of the warm-up process to be followed, especially in Paralympic powerlifting (PP) athletes. This study aimed to analyze different types of warm-up on the physical performance of PP athletes. Materials and Methods: The sample consisted of 12 elite Brazilian PP male athletes (age, 24.14 ± 6.21 years; bodyweight, 81.67 ± 17.36 kg). The athletes performed ...

Background. Phrynops geoffroanus is a small turtle that inhabits lakes, rivers, and streams throughout South America. The body fat of this animal is used as a folk medicine in Brazil for treating illnesses such as sore throats, ear aches, mumps, rheumatism, and arthritis. The present study evaluated the antimicrobial activity of oil extracted from Phrynops geoffroanus (OPG), determined its chemical composition, and discussed the implications of its use in traditional medicine. The OPG was obtained ...

Microsphere size is a primary determinant of solute release velocity. We present here a rational way for producing PLGA microspheres with different and controlled sizes. The following process variables were studied: Stirring velocity during the second emulsion step, dispersed and continuous phases volume ratio, and poly(vinyl alcohol) concentration in the continuous phase. A full factorial experimental design 2(3) with triplicate at the central point was used to determine the influence of variables ...

Stannous chloride (SnCl(2)) is widely used in daily human life, for example, to conserve soft drinks, in food manufacturing and biocidal preparations. In nuclear medicine, stannous chloride is used as a reducing agent of Technetium-99m, a radionuclide used to label different cells and molecules. In spite of this, stannous chloride is able to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) which can damage DNA. In this work, plasmid DNA (pUC 9.1) was incubated with SnCl(2) under different conditions and the ...

Paralympic Powerlifting is a sport in which the strength of the upper limbs is assessed through bench press performance in an adapted specific bench. It is therefore essential to optimize training methods to maximize this performance. The aim of the present study was to compare force production and muscle activation involved in partial vs. full range of motion (ROM) training in Paralympic Powerlifting. Twelve male athletes of elite national level in Paralympic Powerlifting participated in the study ( ...

The toxic effects of SnCl2 in K562 cells were analyzed in this study. This cell line is resistant to reactive oxygen species (ROS) making it suitable to evaluate the impact of SnCl2 in culture either through ROS or by direct toxicity using Trypan blue dye exclusion, comet and flow cytometry assays. An important loss of viability induced by SnCl2 in a dose-response manner was observed in cells treated in Tris-buffered saline (TBS). This necrotic cell death was further confirmed by flow cytometry. On ...

Reduced longevity observed in hypopituitarism has been attributed to GH deficiency (GHD). It is, however, unclear whether GHD or other confounding factors cause this early mortality. The aim was to study longevity in subjects from a large kindred with untreated, lifetime isolated GHD (IGHD) due to a homozygous mutation in the GHRH receptor gene and in heterozygous carriers of the mutation. We carried out a retrospective cohort study on three groups. We first compared mortality risk of 65 IGHD individuals ...

Gastric cancer is the fourth most frequent type of cancer and the second most frequent cause of cancer mortality worldwide. Only a modest number of gastric carcinoma cell lines have been isolated thus far. Here we describe the establishment and cytogenetic characterization of three new gastric cancer cell lines obtained from primary gastric adenocarcinoma (ACP02 and ACP03) and cancerous ascitic fluid (AGP01) of individuals from northern Brazil. ACP02, ACP03, and AGP01 cell lines are presently in the ...

Abstract Eugenia copacabanensis and Myrciaria tenella are present in restingas of the Atlantic Forest, but little information is available about their chemical and biological potential. In this context, the hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate and butanol fractions from the leaves of methanolic extract were analyzed by GC/MS and HPLC‐DAD and the antioxidant potential was determined by DPPH and ABTS assays and using a Saccharomyces cerevisiae model.
