Prolactin is secreted from the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland in response both to suckling and to stress. We recently observed that 1-methyl-6,7-dihydroxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline (salsolinol), produced in the neurointermediate lobe of the pituitary gland, as well as in the medial basal hypothalamus, can selectively release prolactin from the anterior pituitary. Therefore, it has been proposed that salsolinol is a putative endogenous prolactin-releasing factor (PRF). Here, we report that ...

We have recently observed that 1-methyl-6,7-dihydroxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline (salsolinol) produced by hypothalamic neurons can selectively release prolactin from the anterior lobe (AL) of the pituitary gland. Moreover, high affinity binding sites for SAL have been detected in areas, like median eminence (ME) and the neuro-intermediate lobe (NIL) that are known terminal fields of the tuberoinfundibular DAergic (TIDA) and tuberohypophysial (THDA)/periventricular (PHDA) DAergic systems of the hypothalamus, ...

It has been recently shown that salsolinol (SAL) is present in the hypothalamic neuroendocrine dopaminergic (NEDA) system and appears to be a selective and potent stimulator of prolactin (PRL) secretion in the rat. Furthermore, the lack of interference of SAL with 3H-spiperone binding in the striatum and the anterior lobe (AL) of the pituitary gland has been also demonstrated. These data clearly indicate that SAL does not act at the dopamine (DA) D2 receptors, and suggest that SAL supposedly has a binding ...

A bstract : In mammals, the role of a prolactin‐releasing factor (PRF) in the acute changes of prolactin (PRL) secretion that usually occur after challenges (e.g., suckling stimulus or stress) of homeostasis has been suspected for a long time. We have recently observed that 1‐methyl‐6,7‐dihydroxy‐1,2,3,4‐tetrahydroisoquinoline, salsolinol (SAL), produced by the hypothalamus and the neuro‐intermediate lobe (NIL) of the pituitary gland, can selectively release PRL from the anterior lobe (AL). Moreover, binding ...

A tilted-pulse-front pumped terahertz pulse source is proposed for the generation of extremely high field single-cycle terahertz pulses. The very simple and compact source consists of a single crystal slab having a blazed reflection grating grooved in its back surface. Its further important advantages are the energy scalability and the symmetric THz beam profile. Generation of ∼50 MV/cm focused field with 10.8 mJ terahertz pulse energy is predicted for a 7 cm diameter LiNbO 3 crystal, if the pump ...

Abstract To avoid mobbing attacks by their hosts during egg laying, some avian brood parasites have evolved traits to visually and/or acoustically resemble predator(s) of their hosts. Prior work established that reed warblers ( Acrocephalus scirpaceus ), a small host species of the brood parasitic common cuckoo ( Cuculus canorus ), delayed returning to the nest when confronted by either the calls of the female cuckoo or that of the predatory sparrowhawk ( Accipiter nisus ). It remains less clear, however, whether ...

Mycoplasma anatis, M. anseris, M. cloacale and M. sp. 1220 colonise geese and ducks, and could be associated with infections of avian respiratory and nervous systems, cause mild to severe inflammation of cloaca and genital tracts, and embryo lethality. Co-occurrence of these Mycoplasma species in waterfowl is frequently detected and the identification of these mycoplasmas to the species level at a regular microbiology laboratory is difficult due to their similar morphological, cultural and biochemical ...

It is well known that avian brood parasites lay their eggs in the nests of other bird species, called hosts. It remains less clear, however, just how parasites are able to recognize their hosts and identify the exact location of the appropriate nests to lay their eggs in. While previous studies attributed high importance to visual signals in finding the hosts' nests (e.g. nest building activity or the distance and direct sight of the nest from vantage points used by the brood parasites), the role ...

Common cuckoos (Cuculus canorus) are best known for their simple two-note calls ("cu-coo"), which are uttered only by males during the breeding season. A previous playback study revealed that territorial males were more tolerant toward playbacks of the calls of familiar, neighbouring individuals than toward unfamiliar, stranger simulated intruders, exhibiting the classical "dear-enemy" phenomenon. Here we experimentally assessed whether the acoustic cues for familiarity recognition are encoded in the ...

A hybrid-type terahertz pulse source is proposed for high energy terahertz pulse generation. It is the combination of the conventional tilted-pulse-front setup and a transmission stair-step echelon-faced nonlinear crystal with a period falling in the hundredmicrometer range. The most important advantage of the setup is the possibility of using plane parallel nonlinear optical crystal for producing good-quality, symmetric terahertz beam.Another advantage of the proposed setup is the significant reduction ...

Abstract The brood parasitic Common Cuckoo Cuculus canorus is best known for its two-note “cu-coo” call which is almost continuously uttered by male during the breeding season and can be heard across long distances in the field. Although the informative value of the cuckoo call was intensively investigated recently, it is still not clear whether call characteristic(s) indicate any of the phenotypic traits of the respective vocalising individuals. To fill this gap, we studied whether the call rate ...

Because of their biological relevance, cyclic β-amino acids have generated increasing interest and had significant impact in drug research over the past two decades. Their preparation and further functionalization towards new types of molecular entities have received large interest in synthetic and medicinal chemistry. Various types of metathesis reactions, such as ring-opening (ROM), ring-closing (RCM), or cross metathesis (CM) are used widely for access to either alicyclic β-amino acids or other ...

The syntheses involved 1,3‐dipolar cycloaddition of chlorosulfonyl isocyanate, followed by ring‐opening metathesis of the unsaturated bi‐ or tricyclic β‐lactams, and cross‐metathesis of the resulting divinyl‐substituted azetidinones. The substituted lactams were subsequently transformed by heteroring‐opening into the ...

Seliciclib, a cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor, is a promising candidate to treat a variety of cancers. Pharmacokinetic studies have shown high oral bioavailability but limited brain exposure to the drug. This study shows that seliciclib is a high-affinity substrate of ATP-binding cassette B1 (ABCB1) because it activates the ATPase activity of the transporter with an EC 50 of 4.2 μM and shows vectorial transport in MDCKII-MDR1 cells, yielding an efflux ratio of 8. This interaction may be behind ...

Alzheimer's disease is associated with an increased risk of unprovoked seizures. However, the underlying mechanisms of seizure induction remain elusive. Here, we performed video-EEG recordings in mice carrying mutant human APPswe and PS1dE9 genes (APdE9 mice) and their wild-type littermates to determine the prevalence of unprovoked seizures. In two recording episodes at the onset of amyloid beta (Abeta) pathogenesis (3 and 4.5 months of age), at least one unprovoked seizure was detected in 65% of APdE9 ...
