In the Po plain, northern Italy, rivers within agricultural basins display steep summer increases in nitrate (NO3−) concentrations. Flood irrigation in overfertilized, permeable soils may drive such diffuse pollution, facilitating interactions between NO3−-rich groundwater and surface waters. We discuss multiple, indirect evidence of this mechanism in the Adda, Oglio, and Mincio rivers. These rivers drain agricultural soils with elevated nitrogen (N) surpluses, averaging 139, 193, and 136 kg ha−1 ...

Fabrication of three-dimensional (3D) structures and functional tissues directly in live animals would enable minimally invasive surgical techniques for organ repair or reconstruction. Here, we show that 3D cell-laden photosensitive polymer hydrogels can be bioprinted across and within tissues of live mice, using bio-orthogonal two-photon cycloaddition and crosslinking of the polymers at wavelengths longer than 850 nm. Such intravital 3D bioprinting—which does not create by-products and takes advantage ...

The antibiotic resistance surveillance project AR-ISS, started in 2001, is based on a network of 62 sentinel microbiological laboratories throughout the country. The laboratories collect and transmit data to the Istituto Superiore di Sanità on the antibiotic susceptibility of bloodstream isolates of 7 species: Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Enterococcus faecalis/faecium, Klebsiella pneumoniae/oxytoca ed Escherichia coli. They also send selected bacterial strains for further characterization. ...

Two short sediment cores collected at the deepest points of the two sub-basins of Lake Garda (Northern Italy) were radiometrically dated and analyzed for geochemistry, spheroidal carbonaceous particles, photosynthetic pigments and diatoms aimed at reconstructing the lake's ecological evolution over the last ~ 700 years, and at defining its reference conditions. Both cores showed steady dominance of small Cyclotella spp. and oligotrophic diatom-inferred lake TP concentrations from the Middle Ages until ...

Perfluoroalkylated substances (PFAS) in serum are inversely associated with fetal growth. Small for gestational age (SGA) is a measure based on birth weight and gestational age at birth and represents a good indicator of fetal growth but it has been used only in a small number of studies. We examined the association between PFAS exposure and the risk of severe SGA in a PFAS contaminated area in the Veneto Region (North-East of Italy). A retrospective cohort study has been developed including all singleton ...

Common tests for the assessment of blood coagulation in the acute phase of deep vein thrombosis are of limited value for the evaluation of the associated hypercoagulability. The new rotation thromboelastometry by rotation thrombelastogram has the potential to provide information on whole blood clot formation and prothrombotic state in patients with acute deep vein thrombosis. Rotation thrombelastogram parameters were evaluated in whole blood of 30 patients with a first episode of acute deep vein ...

1. The genus Planktothrix (Cyanobacteria) usually produces concentrated populations of filaments in the summer metalimnion of thermally stratifying lakes. This has been associated with the action of gas vesicles, cellular structures providing positive buoyancy. At the end of the summer, filaments are carried by convective mixing deeper into the water column where some gas vesicles collapse as a result of high hydrostatic pressure. They then lose their buoyancy, sink and are lost from the euphotic ...

Since the beginning of the 1990s, Lake Garda showed the appearance of extended surface water blooms of Dolichospermum lemmermannii (Nostocales, Cyanobacteria). Between the 1990s and the 2000s, the blooms appeared also in the other large lakes south of the Alps (Iseo, Como and Maggiore). Despite the sudden appearance of the blooms, the correct identification of the establishment time of the populations of Dolichospermum in the southern subalpine lake district remained ...

Dendritic cells serve as the main immune cells that trigger the immune response. We developed a simple and cost-effective nanovaccine platform based on the α1′,2-mannobiose derivative for dendritic cell targeting. In previous work, we have formulated the α1,2-mannobiose-based nanovaccine platform with plasmid DNA and tested it in cattle against BoHV-1 infection. There, we have shown that the dendritic cell targeting using this nanovaccine platform in vivo can boost the immunogenicity, resulting ...

Long mirrors coated with thin films are used for a wide range of applications, e.g., focusing or collimating high-energy optics. Focusing of incident x-ray radiation is one of the major applications for high-energy astronomical telescopes, and collimation of divergent x-ray sources is used for experimental setups to confine or expand x-ray radiation. Both applications utilize grazing angle reflection, which is typically enhanced using x-ray reflective thin films. One of the challenges with thin ...
