Purpose. To evaluate the relationship between internal carotid artery (ICA) stenosis and subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) in the elderly population. Methods. A total of 42 eyes of 21 patients with more than 70% ICA stenosis (Group 1) on one side and less than 70% stenosis (Group 2) on the other side were recruited for this study. ICA stenosis was diagnosed using both the B-mode and Doppler ultrasound. The two groups were compared in terms of the percentage of stenosis, SFCT measurements, intraocular ...

Commercial yields of walleye (Stizostedion vitreum vitreum) increased from 1888 to the mid-1930s and then gradually declined to 1973. Commercial yields of sauger (S. canadense) and yellow perch (Perca flavescens), first recorded in 1926, were more stable than walleye yields. The increase in walleye yields was associated with declines in the yield of lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) and lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis). Walleye yields declined from 1.7 kg∙ha −1 annually in the 1930s to 0.8 kg∙ ...

ABSTRACT Ion transport peptide (ITP) purified from locust nervous corpus cardiacum (CC) has previously been shown to stimulate salt and water reabsorption and inhibit acid secretion in the ileum of Schistocerca gregaria. We used the partial amino acid sequence of purified ITP to derive degenerate primers. These were used to amplify a cDNA from brain RNA using reverse transcription and the polymerase chain reaction (RtPCR). This sequence was extended using anchored PCR to yield a partial, 517 bp cDNA ...

Mexico harbors great cultural and ethnic diversity, yet fine-scale patterns of human genome-wide variation from this region remain largely uncharacterized. We studied genomic variation within Mexico from over 1000 individuals representing 20 indigenous and 11 mestizo populations. We found striking genetic stratification among indigenous populations within Mexico at varying degrees of geographic isolation. Some groups were as differentiated as Europeans are from East Asians. Pre-Columbian genetic ...

Here we report a genome-wide association study for non-pathological pinna morphology in over 5,000 Latin Americans. We find genome-wide significant association at seven genomic regions affecting: lobe size and attachment, folding of antihelix, helix rolling, ear protrusion and antitragus size (linear regression P values 2 × 10(-8) to 3 × 10(-14)). Four traits are associated with a functional variant in the Ectodysplasin A receptor (EDAR) gene, a key regulator of embryonic skin appendage development. We ...

The five-step thermohydrogen treatment (THT) "hydride-induced recrystallization of the β phase" (HIRB) aiming at improvement of the high cycle fatigue limit was successfully developed and implemented for the high-strength β titanium alloy Ti 10V-2Fe-3Al. The possibility of establishing an advantageous microstructure modification depends sensitively on the THT process parameters, particularly in terms of recrystallization and dehydrogenation. The benefit of the HIRB-THT process results from the reduced ...
