Christian de Ronde, Héctor Freytes, Graciela Domenech,

In this paper we attempt to physically interpret the Modal Kochen–Specker (MKS) theorem. In order to do so, we analyze the features of the possible properties of quantum systems arising from the elements in an orthomodular lattice and distinguish the use of "possibility" in the classical and quantum formalisms. Taking into account the modal and many worlds non-collapse interpretation of the projection postulate, we discuss how the MKS theorem rules the constraints to actualization, and thus, the relation ...

Systemic administration of noncompetitive N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) antagonists such as MK-801 is widely used to model psychosis of schizophrenia (SZ). Acute systemic MK-801 in rodents caused an increase of the auditory steady-state responses (ASSRs), the oscillatory neural responses to periodic auditory stimulation, while most studies in patients with SZ reported a decrease of ASSRs. This inconsistency may be attributable to the comprehensive effects of systemic administration of MK-801. ...

Ji Wu, Xiao-Lei Zhang,

In this letter, we propose a multiple kernel support vector machine (MK-SVM) method for multiple feature based VAD. To make the MK-SVM based VAD practical, we adapt the multiple kernel learning (MKL) thought to an efficient cutting-plane structural SVM solver. We further discuss the performances of the MK-SVM with two different optimization objectives, in terms of minimum classification errors (MCE) and improvement of receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Our experimental results show that ...

Effects of MK-801, an N-methyl-D-aspartate antagonist, on short-interval timing were examined using the peak-interval (PI) and PI-gap procedures. Fisher 344 rats were given daily injections of 0.025 mg/kg, 0.05 mg/kg, and 0.2 mg/kg MK-801. The main results were (a) 0.2 mg/kg MK-801 produced an immediate overestimation of the criterion time; (b) MK-801 increased peak rate of responding; (c) 0.2 mg/kg MK-801 produced an increase in variability; (d) during the PI-gap procedure, a reset pattern was observed ...

Genevieve Couldwell, Kellie R. Machlus,

Megakaryocytes (MKs) are widely known as the progenitor cells of platelets. These large, polyploid cells are a derivative of the hematopoietic stem cell (HSC), and reside in the bone marrow, lining blood vessel walls where they release their platelet progeny into circulation. Although little is known about how MKs differ under various environmental stressors, both chronic and acute inflammation alter the differentiation and molecular content of MKs. Furthermore, evidence suggests that the release ...

J. Devin McAuley, J. Philip Miller, Kevin Pang,

The NMDA receptor antagonist MK-801 produces different effects on timing tasks. In particular, MK-801 produces an underestimation of duration when animals are tested with the differential reinforcement of low rate of responding (DRL) schedule and an overestimation of duration when animals are tested with the peak-interval (PI) procedure. The goal of this study was to develop a model-based explanation for this discrepancy. Two computer simulations were conducted via an implementation of scalar expectancy ...

Given a monomial ideal I=〈m1,m2,…,mk〉 where mi are monomials and a polynomial f by an arithmetic circuit, the Ideal Membership Problem is to test if f∈I. We study this problem and show the following results. When the ideal I=〈m1,m2,…,mk〉 for a constant k, we can test whether f∈I in randomized polynomial time. This result holds even for f given by a black-box, when f is of small degree. When I=〈m1,m2,…,mk〉 for a constant kandf is computed by a ΣΠΣ circuit with output gate of bounded fanin, we can ...

This article discusses the process of delegation of powers, the aspects of the organizational process, the relationship of credentials and the obstacles to effective delegation. Delegating authority is a major process by which managers establish formal relationships with people in the organization. In order for the plans to be implemented, each needs to carry out a specific task that is included in the organization's plans, so leadership must identify an effective way of combining the key issues ...

R. A. Webb, Richard F. Voss, G. Grinstein, Paul Horn,

This Letter reports measurements down to 3 mK of the magnetic field dependence of the resistance and critical current of a weakly coupled periodic array of Josephson junctions. Below 700 mK the resistance is an oscillatory function of field. The temperature dependence of the resistance for integral numbers of flux quanta per cell suggests the existence of a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition involving the unbinding of defects in the flux lattice.

Crystalline Bi4O4SeCl2 exhibits record-low 0.1 W/mK lattice thermal conductivity (κL), but the underlying transport mechanism is not yet understood. Using a theoretical framework which incorporates first-principles anharmonic lattice dynamics into a unified heat transport theory, we compute both the particle-like and glass-like components of κL in crystalline and pellet Bi4O4SeCl2 forms. The model includes intrinsic three- and four-phonon scattering processes and extrinsic defect and extended defect ...

Joyjit Kundu, R. Rajesh,

A system of hard rectangles of size $m\times mk$ on a square lattice undergoes three entropy driven phase transitions with increasing density for large enough aspect ratio $k$: first from a low density isotropic to an intermediate density nematic phase, second from the nematic to a columnar phase, and third from the columnar to a high density sublattice phase. In this paper we show, from extensive Monte Carlo simulations of systems with $m=1,2$ and $3$, that the transition density for the isotropic- ...
