AVAILABLE INFORMATION suggests that ethanol-induced hepatic necrosis in the setting of fatty liver initiates a regenerative reaction which ultimately leads to lobular distortion and cirrhosis. 1 Further research is now desirable to elucidate mechanisms responsible for the hepatic cell damage, to discover initiating and controlling factors in regeneration, and to determine the contribution of various cell types to liver repair. The present investigation was undertaken to delineate the degree, localization, ...

Daily oral doses of 300 mg diphenylhydantoin given to 14 prisoner volunteers for periods of up to 9 months resulted in a significant depletion of pesticide residues in the adipose tissues. At 9 months, DDT, DDE and dieldrin residues were depleted by 75, 61 and 73% of pretreatment levels, respectively. Apart from gingival hypertrophy in one subject and transient elevation of alkaline phosphatase in 95% of treated cases, no other adverse effect was noted. In nine placebo controls from the same prison, ...

Cardiomyopathy in alcoholics is considered to be associated with a low incidence of hepatic cirrhosis. To evaluate cardiac hemodynamics in alcoholic liver disease, left ventricular function in 37 patients with hepatic cirrhosis (group II) was compared with that in 13 normal subjects (group I) matched for age, sex and cardiac size. These groups were contrasted with group III, comprising 32 alcoholics without cirrhosis who had cardiac symptoms but no cardiomegaly or heart failure. Patients with cirrhosis ...

This study utilizes 7 years of continuously monitored groundwater‐level data from four sites along the Río Grande riparian corridor in central New Mexico to calculate evapotranspiration from groundwater and assess impacts of understory vegetation removal during a restoration project. Diurnal groundwater fluctuation measurements were used to compare the well‐known White method for estimating evapotranspiration from groundwater ( ET g ) to colocated measurements of total riparian evapotranspiration ( ET ) ...

There is increasing evidence that diurnal blood pressure (BP) variation, in addition to high BP per se, is related to target organ damage and the incidence of cardiovascular events. However, the determinants of diurnal BP variation are not adequately understood. This paper tests the hypothesis that cardiovascular reactivity to acute stress and/or delayed recovery predicts greater diurnal BP variation (i.e., a lower sleep/awake BP ratio). We studied the relationship of diurnal BP variation (assessed ...
