T he singing style to be treated here has had several appellations. Lining-out is perhaps the most familiar term. The term deaconing may be better known in England. The style, as practiced by American Negroes, is called long-meter or Dr. Watts. The descriptive terms surge-singing or surging were used by George Pullen Jackson to describe the Negro practice. The literature indicates somewhat misleadingly that the style has disappeared. We read (Thompson, 1956):
