ABSTRACT Surveys were conducted in villages in five regions of Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger and Senegal to determine priority tree functions and species. Villagers listed eight priority functions and 116 important species. The most important functions were essential products (human food, medicines, animal food, wood/energy/fiber) followed by environmental services (soil fertility improvement, soil/water conservation, shade) and sale to generate revenue. The relative importance of most functions and several ...

Ferrimagnetic materials such as natural magnetite are used for practical applications because of their electronic, magnetic and catalytic properties in the degradation of organic compounds. In order to determine its physicochemical properties in relation to its catalytic activity, the natural magnetite of Ofoud Mount (Niger) is characterized by X-ray florescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (DRX), specific surface area (BET) and Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR). The result shows an iron content of 97. ...

Groundnut Arachis hypogaea (L.), is an important legume crop after cowpea Vigna unguiculata (L. Walp) in Niger. However, there has been a decline in its economic importance due to several challenges. A survey of 800 farmers was conducted in 40 villages in the Maradi and Zinder regions to assess constraints and opportunities to improve groundnut production and marketing. Average land size and yield varied by region: 1.3 ha per farmer and 461.3 kg ha-1 in Maradi, and 1.7 ha per farmer and 417.2 kg ha- ...

Djado Sékou, a professional storyteller, is one of the most celebrated griots in Niger. He has a predilection for everything that deals with the imaginary and dreams. His audience is fond of love stories, which he considers a superior form of literature. Love in the narratives of Djado Sékou, it is a founding and fundamental theme. The theme of love permeates Niger’s courtly epic as the narratives “Labdedjo” by Tinguizi and “Garba Mama” by Djéliba Badjo well exemplify. Djado Sékou is one of the storytellers ...

Within the framework of upgrading natural phosphate of Tahoua, a study was carried out on the dissolution of ore by inorganic acid (sulfuric acid, nitric acid) and organic acid (citric acid) solutions according to pH and attack time. The obtained results show a sudden drop of dissolution rate at pH above 2 and a dissolution almost zero beyond pH 4. The kinetic study shows fast dissolution of ore one hour after the attack. However, this dissolution is slow beyond one hour with few dissolved phosphorus ...

Ability to rapidly and accurate diagnose pathogens during disease outbreaks is essential for public health. Diagnosis depends largely on laboratory capacity, which can be challenging in resource limited settings. We report Mali’s experience involving four research laboratories in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Delayed post-traumatic pneumoventricle tension is characterized by a pathological accumulation of air in the cerebral ventricles after 72 hours of head trauma. This is a rare neurosurgical emergency that occurs following a skull base fracture complicated by an osteodural defect without pneumocephalus or, more rarely, as a complication of simple acute post-traumatic pneumoventricle. This is a challenge in low-income countries due to limited access to brain imaging and neurosurgical technical platforms. ...
