The human immunodeficiency virus type-1 (HIV-1)-accessory protein Vpr interacts with and potentiates the activity of the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) and arrests the host cell cycle at the G2/M boundary. Here we report that three core components of the general transcription factor (TF) IIH, CDK7, Cyclin H, and MAT1, enhance Vpr’s GR coactivator activity but inhibit its cell cycle-arresting function. A CDK7 mutant defective in kinase activity for the C-terminal tail of RNA polymerase II, which cannot ...

We report here a method to produce quail hatchlings by culture in vitro from the single-cell stage. The culture is composed of three steps. In the first step, the fertilized ovum surrounded by thick albumen obtained from the magnum is cultured for 24 hr at 41.5°C in a tightly sealed 20-ml plastic cup with chicken thin albumen added to the equator level of the ovum (System Q1). In the second step, a quail egg shell, cut horizontally and emptied, is used as a bed shell. After the thick albumen is removed, ...

The nearby radio galaxy M87 is a prime target for studying black hole accretion and jet formation1,2. Event Horizon Telescope observations of M87 in 2017, at a wavelength of 1.3 mm, revealed a ring-like structure, which was interpreted as gravitationally lensed emission around a central black hole3. Here we report images of M87 obtained in 2018, at a wavelength of 3.5 mm, showing that the compact radio core is spatially resolved. High-resolution imaging shows a ring-like structure of [Formula: see ...

l-Amino acid ligase catalyzes dipeptide synthesis from unprotected l-amino acids in an ATP-dependent manner. We recently identified a new member of l-amino acid ligase, the plu1440 protein, from Photorhabdus luminescens subsp. laumondii TT01 by in silico analysis. This protein was found to synthesize dipeptides containing l-asparagine at the N-terminus, which is a novel substrate specificity.

Multi-epoch Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) study of the sub-pc scale jet of 3C 84 is presented. We carried out 14-epoch VLBI observations during 2006-2009 with the Japanese VLBI Network (JVN) and the VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry (VERA), immediately following the radio outburst that began in 2005. We confirmed that the outburst was associated with the central ~1 pc core, accompanying the emergence of a new component. This is striking evidence of the recurrence of jet activity. The new ...

l-Amino acid ligase catalyzes the formation of an α-peptide bond from unprotected l-amino acids in an ATP-dependent manner, and this enzyme is very useful in efficient peptide production. We performed enzyme purification to obtain a novel l-amino acid ligase from Bacillus subtilis NBRC3134, a microorganism producing peptide-antibiotic rhizocticin. Rhizocticins are dipeptide or tripeptide antibiotics and commonly possess l-arginyl-l-2-amino-5-phosphono-3-cis-pentenoic acid. The purification was carried ...

X-ray observations reveal a pair of `isolated' flares separated by ~90 days, with ...

L-Amino-acid ligases (LALs) are enzymes which catalyze the formation of dipeptides by linking two L-amino acids. Although many dipeptides are known and expected to have medical and nutritional benefits, their practical use has been limited owing to their low availability and high expense. LALs are potentially desirable tools for the efficient production of dipeptides; however, the molecular basis of substrate recognition by LAL has not yet been sufficiently elucidated for the design of ideal LALs ...

ABSTRACT The radio galaxy 3C 84 is a representative of γ-ray-bright misaligned active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and one of the best laboratories to study the radio properties of the subparsec jet in connection with the γ-ray emission. In order to identify possible radio counterparts of γ-ray emissions in 3C 84, we study the change in structure within the central 1 pc and the light curve of subparsec-sized components C1, C2 and C3. We search for any correlation between changes in the radio components ...
