Modeling evapotranspiration (ET) in Arctic coastal plain ecosystems is challenging owing to the unique conditions present in this environment, including permafrost, nonvascular vegetation, and a large standing dead vegetation component. In this study the ecosystem process model, BIOME‐BGC, was adapted to represent these unique conditions in Arctic ecosystems by including a new water storage and evaporation routine that accounts for nonvascular vegetation and the effects of permafrost, adding ground ...

A Papanicolaou (Pap) test result of atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASCUS) presents a clinical challenge. Only 5% to 10% of women with ASCUS harbor serious cervical disease, but more than one third of the high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSILs) in screening populations are identified from ASCUS Pap test results. To determine whether human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA testing of residual material from liquid-based Pap tests and referral of cases found to be HPV-positive directly ...

Purpose. Natural health products (NHPs), including melatonin, are widely used products. Despite the widespread assumption that all NHPs are safe, they contain pharmacologically active substances and can therefore have adverse effects and/or interact with pharmaceuticals. Objective: To investigate the mechanism underlying NHP interactions identified through the Pharmacy SONAR active surveillance study. Methods: Active surveillance was undertaken in community pharmacies to identify adverse events in ...

Energy budgets were measured at Arctic tundra ecosystems in Alaska, USA. Measurements were carried out over coastal tundra at Prudhoe Bay in 1994, and at wet sedge, moist and dry tussock tundra around Happy Valley in 1995. Sensible heat flux, H, and latent heat flux, lE, were determined by an eddy correlation technique. Over the Arctic coastal tundra, the energy partition changed remarkably as a result of air mass conditions. Under cold and humid wild (onshore) from the Arctic Ocean, the temperature ...

The CO2 flux of a wet sedge tundra ecosystem in the Arctic, at Barrow, Alaska, has been measured by the eddy correlation method since spring 1999, and the CO2 uptake by the vegetation during the spring and growing periods was examined between 1999 and 2000. CO2 flux changed to a sink immediately after the spring thaw in 1999 and the photosynthetic activity was high in the first half of the growing period. At this time the air temperature was low and solar radiation was high. In the 2000 season, ...

We intensively reviewed 137 smears initially classified as atypical glandular cells of undetermined significance (AGUS) to refine cytological criteria for evaluating these cases, evaluate histological outcomes, and assess the value of human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA testing in management. Consenting, nonpregnant study participants were identified from a cohort of 46,009 women receiving routine Pap smear screening in a managed care setting. Colposcopy was performed on all women, and at least one histological ...

ABSTRACT Quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) assays that target the human-associated HF183 bacterial cluster within members of the genus Bacteroides are among the most widely used methods for the characterization of human fecal pollution in ambient surface waters. In this study, we show that a current TaqMan HF183 qPCR assay (HF183/BFDrev) routinely forms nonspecific amplification products and introduce a modified TaqMan assay (HF183/BacR287) that alleviates this problem. The performance of each qPCR ...

O uso intensivo de áreas do Cerrado para produção agropecuária aliado ao manejo inadequado tem causado degradação dos solos. Nesse sentido há necessidade da incorporação de sistemas sustentáveis como plantio direto e a integração lavoura-pecuária. Abstract 1. Eddy covariance was used to measure the net CO 2 flux of Alaskan moist‐tussock and wet‐sedge tundra ecosystems between 1 June and 31 August 1995. The sites were located within 2·5 km of each other and, depending on wind speed and thermal stability, the eddy‐covariance measurements integrated surface fluxes over 0·8–26·5 ha (mean 3·8 ha) at the moist‐tussock site and 0·1–4·2 ha (mean 0·6) at the wet‐sedge site. 2. Both sites were net sinks for atmospheric CO 2 during the 92‐day measurement ...

High latitude ecosystems were thought to enhance CH. emission in relation to the current arctic warming. However, we have little information about this potential feedback mechanisms on climate change, thus, model parameterization is insu$cient and the observational data are required. We observed CH. flux at several types of tundra in Alaska over the growing seasons since +33/. From these observed data, we examined current CH. emission and its controlling factors on Alaskan tundra. Then we discussed ...

The seasonal change of CO2 uptake by the vegetation and the net CO2 budget through the growing period were examined for the 2000 growing season. Tundra CO2 budget analysis model(TCBM) was applied to examine the vegetation responses to the environmental variables. Photosynthesis of the vegetation was well parameterized as functions of measured solar radiation, Rsd and air ...

Abstract: Non-infectious uveitis (NIU) is a group of sight-threatening diseases that generates significant burden for the healthcare systems due to its adverse outcomes, irreversible structural complications in the eye with loss of visual function, limited clinical expertise and low-grade evidence for best practice. The usefulness of multidisciplinary care, specifically close collaboration between Rheumatologists and Ophthalmologists in NIU, has been emphasized in the literature. In this paper, the ...

Anorectal emergencies comprise a wide variety of diseases that share common symptoms, i.e., anorectal pain or bleeding and might require immediate management. While most of the underlying conditions do not need inpatient management, some of them could be life-threatening and need prompt recognition and treatment. It is well known that an incorrect diagnosis is frequent for anorectal diseases and that a delayed diagnosis is related to an impaired outcome. This paper aims to improve the knowledge ...

Abstract Background The trauma mortality rate is higher in the elderly compared with younger patients. Ageing is associated with physiological changes in multiple systems and correlated with frailty. Frailty is a risk factor for mortality in elderly trauma patients. Methods Six working groups of expert acute care and trauma surgeons reviewed extensively the literature ...
