Soft robots are one of the most significant recent evolutions in robotics. They rely on compliant physical structures purposefully designed to embody desired characteristics. Since their introduction, they have shown remarkable applicability in overcoming their rigid counterparts in such areas as interaction with humans, adaptability, energy efficiency, and maximization of peak performance. Nonetheless, we believe that research on novel soft robot applications is still slowed by the difficulty in ...

One of the highest incidences of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in the world has been reported in Mexico City. In the current study (26 cases), the frequencies of the most frequent genetic rearrangements TEL-AML1, MLL/AF4, BCR-ABL (major and minor) in ALL in children from Mexico City were determined. For the ALL, the frequency of MLL/AF4 was 65.4%, for TEL-AML1 and that of BCR/ABL was 3.8%. Only 6 of the 17 children with the MLL/AF4 rearrangement were less than 26 months old. The frequency reported ...

Abstract Background: The blood of cancer patients is known to contain fragments of RNA released from the tumor. The application of genomic profiling techniques to plasma RNA may allow the unbiased selection of cancer markers in the blood, but the informative value of genomic profiling of plasma RNA is currently unknown. Methods: We used cDNA microarray hybridization to perform genomic profiling of plasma RNA from colorectal cancer (CRC) patients and from healthy donors. From a list of 40 genes differentially ...

A two-time scales method (singular perturbations) is used to construct the limit cycle and the global nonuniform steady patterns that appear in a diffusion-reaction process with autocatalysis and the Langmuir–Hinshelwood (Michaelis–Menten, Holling) saturation law. The stability of these nonlinear structures is also established in this paper.

The concept of postmodernism can be applied to the tourist sector in the search for profiles of visitors at a tourist destination. The purpose of this study is to determine the similarities between tourist characteristics and postmodern behavior. An analysis of latent class methodology is used to help explain the heterogeneity of tourist behavior. This diversity is demonstrated in five groups with some behavior patterns closer to modernism and others closer to postmodernism. Further, different tendencies ...

Abstract The atom transfer radical polymerization of an unprotected glycomonomer, 2‐{[( D ‐glucosamin‐2 N ‐yl)carbonyl]oxy}ethyl methacrylate (HEMAGl) is firstly reported. Controlled polymerizations were performed with the CuBr/ N,N,N′,N′,N′ ‐pentamethyldiethylene triamine catalytic system with ethyl 2‐bromoisobutyrate and 1,2‐bis(bromoisobutyryloxy) ethane as mono and difunctional initiators in DMF solutions (80% w/w) at 40 and 50 °C, respectively.

The new environmental paradigm (NEP) is probably the most widely used measure of environmental attitude in the world. However, according to the literature review, the dimensionality of the NEP scale has occasioned disagreement. The main objective of this paper was to provide a solution to this dilemma, proposing an examination of the NEP scale. Hence, this paper proposes a short form measure called brief ecological paradigm (BEP) scale. The present study is based on a sample of 509 golf tourists from ...

Abstract Angiogenesis is a multiscale process by which blood vessels grow from existing ones and carry oxygen to distant organs. Angiogenesis is essential for normal organ growth and wounded tissue repair but it may also be induced by tumours to amplify their own growth. Mathematical and computational models contribute to understanding angiogenesis and developing anti-angiogenic drugs, but most work only involves numerical simulations and analysis has lagged. A recent stochastic model of tumour- ...

Abstract The debate about the role of attitude in the technology acceptance model (TAM) seems to have re‐emerged in two prestigious journals in the field of educational technology. Among the publications on this debate, there are authors in favour of excluding the attitude of TAM, whereas others are in favour of including it. These opinions are derived from the results that both groups have obtained in their researches. We have wondered whether the methodology used in these studies could have influenced ...

Tunable oscillatory modes of electric-field domains in doped semiconductor superlattices are reported. The experimental investigations demonstrate the realization of tunable, GHz frequencies in GaAs-AlAs superlattices covering the temperature region from 5 to 300 K. The orgin of the tunable oscillatory modes is determined using an analytical and a numerical modeling of the dynamics of domain formation. Three different oscillatory modes are found. Their presence depends on the actual shape of the ...

We investigate lepton flavour violation in a class of minimal left-right symmetric models where the left-right symmetry is broken by triplet scalars. In this context we present a method to consistently calculate the triplet-Yukawa couplings which takes into account the experimental data while simultaneously respecting the underlying symmetries. Analysing various scenarios, we then calculate the full set of tree-level and one-loop contributions to all radiative and three-body flavour-violating fully ...

Recently, the method of choice to exploit robot dynamics for efficient walking is numerical optimization (NO). The main drawback in NO is the computational complexity, which strongly affects the time demand of the solution. Several strategies can be used to make the optimization more treatable and to efficiently describe the solution set. In this letter, we present an algorithm to encode effective walking references, generated offline via numerical optimization, extracting a limited number of principal ...

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a silent and poorly known killer. The current concept of CKD is relatively young and uptake by the public, physicians and health authorities is not widespread. Physicians still confuse CKD with chronic kidney insufficiency or failure. For the wider public and health authorities, CKD evokes kidney replacement therapy (KRT). In Spain, the prevalence of KRT is 0.13%. Thus health authorities may consider CKD a non-issue: very few persons eventually need KRT and, for those ...

The increase in the luxury hospitality industry has led to a significant body of new research. Due to some constraints –discussed in detail in this paper–, there is a lack of consensus on the definition and the factors associated with luxury hospitality. This leads to further gaps. Co-occurrence analysis indicates three main topics of research, associated with (1) consumer experience (mainly focused on satisfaction, ...

We present and numerically solve a model of the photorefractive Gunn effect. We find that high-field domains can be triggered by phase-locked interference fringes, as has been recently predicted on the basis of linear stability considerations. Since the Gunn effect is intrinsically nonlinear, we find that such considerations give at best order-of-magnitude estimations of the parameters critical to the photorefractive Gunn effect. The response of the system is much more complex, including multiple ...

The vessel tip density can be reconstructed from the soliton formulas. While the stochastic model exhibits large fluctuations, we show ...
