Transportation infrastructure is of paramount importance for any country. The construction, management and maintenance of this infrastructure is a complex task that requires a significant amount of resources (e.g., human work equipment, materials, maintenance costs). To better support this task, in the last decades several Artificial Intelligence (AI) data analysis tools have been proposed. In this paper, we summarize recent predictive and prescriptive AI applications to the transportation infrastructure ...

The measurement of serum C-reactive protein (CRP) levels has been given particular interest as a marker of inflammation associated with cardiovascular diseases. CRP belongs to the pentraxin family of proteins and the routine clinical analysis of CRP in blood samples is used as an important factor in primary prevention programmes together with causative and predisposing factors. This review focuses on the most representative methodologies and strategies for CRP detection and quantification that have ...

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of particleboard made with pruning wastes from Ipê ( Tabebuia serratifolia) and Chapéu-de-Sol ( Terminalia catappa) trees. Particleboards were prepared with both wood species, using all the material produced by grinding the pruning wastes. The particleboards had dimensions of 45×45 cm, a thickness of approximately 11.5 mm and an average density of 664 kg/m 3 . A urea–formaldehyde adhesive was used in the proportion of 12% ...

Here we report preliminary catalytic wet peroxide oxidation (CWPO) experiments performed in the presence of an alternating current (AC) magnetic field. One ferromagnetic graphitic nanocomposite – composed by a cobalt ferrite core and a graphitic shell (CoFe2O4/MGNC), was employed in the process, here named magnetically activated catalytic wet peroxide oxidation (MA-CWPO). An aqueous solution containing 5.0 g L−1 of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) to simulate a high strength polluted stream was used as model system. ...

Many approaches to teaching HCI focus on either user requirements or prototyping. However, these two techniques do not provide enough tools for students to explore the design space in breadth at early stages of conception. Indeed, even when these two approaches are combined, students still lack tools to explore the design space and bridge the gap from requirements to prototyping. In this paper, we describe the way we teach Human Computer Interaction, stimulating students to be creative during interface ...

Experimental evidence of captopril-induced inhibition of sympathetic activity, mediated by decrease in angiotensin II production, is presented. The blood pressure, plasma catecholamine, plasma renin activity, and plasma aldosterone responses to a single dose of sublingual captopril in 23 patients with hypertensive emergencies were evaluated. The major correlation found was between the captopril-induced decrease in blood pressure and the decrease in plasma norepinephrine levels (r = 0.57, p <0.01). In ...

Freshwater mussels are one of the most threatened animal groups in the world. In the European Union, threatened and protected mussel species are not adequately monitored, while species considered to be common and widespread receive even less attention. This is particularly worrying in the Mediterranean region, where species endemism is high and freshwater habitats are severely affected by water scarcity. In the absence of hard data on population trends, we report here a long-term comparison of freshwater ...

In this work we derived a series of new inhibitors for the association between nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) and the corresponding κB site in DNA. They were derived through optimization of the lead compound 2-cyclopentenone (CP), which corresponds to the reactive unit of natural product 15-Deoxy-Δ12,14-prostaglandin J2 (PGJ2). Both CP and PGJ2 possess demonstrated inhibitory efficiency for this and other biological important systems. We began by studying the docking of CP to NF-κB. Subsequently, a ...

Stroke stands for one of the most frequent causes of death, without distinguishing age or genders. Despite representing an expressive mortality figure, the disease also causes long-term disabilities with a huge recovery time, which goes in parallel with costs. However, stroke and health diseases may also be prevented considering illness evidence. Therefore, the present work will start with the development of a decision support system to assess stroke risk, centered on a formal framework based on ...

Abstract Pharmaceuticals are invaluable tools for the prevention and treatment of human and animal diseases. Human evolution led to the increase of life expectancy, which promoted the increase of consumption of pharmaceuticals. These compounds are consistently detected in superficial waters, and whilst degradation processes are expected to mitigate their levels, they also induce the formation of potentially harmful by-products. The compounds studied in this work were acetaminophen, 17α-ethynylestradiol ...
