In the twentieth century, scientists have examined running speed over various distances, analyzing world records and studying the ability of an athlete to sustain a given speed. Assuming that running speed expresses the response of a non-linear multisystemic behavior, the relationship between these two variables (distance vs. velocity) can therefore be evaluated by applying scaling laws that fulfill the key principles of specificity and individuality of each athlete, yet responding to bioenergetic ...

This study sought to determine the effects of hyperbaric pressure on heart rate modulation, by analyzing potential changes in heart rate variability (HRV). Ten divers were exposed to pressures of 1, 2, 3, and 4 atmospheres absolute (ATA). The test was performed in a hyperbaric chamber. Heart rate (HR) was recorded in supine subjects for 10 minutes per atmosphere. HRV was analyzed in the frequency mode (fast-Fourier transform and continuous wavelet transform). Results confirmed bradycardia as pressure ...

This paper reflects on the factors that condition performance in powerlifting and proposes that the result-generating process is inadequately described by the allometric equations commonly used. We analysed the scores of 1812 lifters belonging to all body mass categories, and analysed the changes in the results achieved in each weight category and by each competitor. Current performance-predicting methods take into account biological variables, paying no heed to other competition features. Performance ...

Middle and long distance athletics races behave as power-laws when time (or average speed) and distance are related, thus suggesting the presence of critical phenomena. Power-laws as a function of the athlete's position in the all-time world ranking allows us to define a Performance Index that reveals the existence of possible multifractal structures associated to the natural barriers to that the athletes tend in their evolution towards better results and in pursuit of world records. The new theories ...

Self-regulated learning (SRL) is being promoted and adopted increasingly due to the needs of current education, student centered and focused on competence development. One of the main components of SRL is learners' self-monitoring, which eventually contributes to a better performance. Monitoring is also important for teachers, as it enables them to know to what extent their learners are doing well and progressing properly. At the same time, the use of technology for learning is now common and facilitates ...

Alzheimer's disease has been studied from various areas of knowledge (biomarkers, brain structure, behavior, cognitive impairment). Our aim was to examine the effects of an exercises protocol developed using complexity theory concepts. Exercise improves neuroplasticity (neuronal ability to change and adapt as a result of experience) through mental and physical skills linked to cognitive-associative brain circuits. Introducing controlled physical and cognitive stimuli, self-organization and connectivity ...

The dynamic interactions among physiological rhythms imbedded in the heart rate signal can give valuable insights into autonomic modulation in conditions of reduced outward attention. Therefore, in this study we analyzed the heart rate variability (HRV) in different levels of practice in Zen meditation (Zazen). Nineteen subjects with variable experience took part in this study. In four special cases we collected both HRV and respiration data. The time series were analyzed in frequency domain and also ...

Periodic porous silicon sub-micrometer wells embedded into a silicon matrix have been grown by a combination of colloidal lithography, plasma processing and electrochemical etching. The process relies on the formation of a self-assembled monolayer of polystyrene microspheres, which are etched in an Ar/O2 plasma. A polymer resist is subsequently deposited by plasma polymerization. Finally, after colloidal particle removal, the surface is electrochemically etched in HF to form the porous silicon wells.

The transmission of longitudinal ultrasonic waves through periodic ceramic microlattices fabricated by Robocasting was measured in the 2–12 MHz frequency range. It was observed that these structures (scaffolds of tetragonal and hexagonal spatial arrangements with periodicity at length-scales of ∼100 μm) exhibit well-detectable acoustic band structures with bandgaps. The locations of these gaps at relatively high frequencies were shown to be in close agreement with the predictions of numerical models, ...

Background: As opposed to other malignancies, immunotherapy has yielded limited efficacy in BC. We have found in animal models of HERNEG BC that chronic hypoxia secondary to prolonged Bev was associated to anti-tumor immune suppression and tumor PD-L1 upregulation. These events rendered HERNEG BC animal models sensitive to PD-L1 blockade in combination with Bev. We sought to explore this concept in the clinics in a pilot phase IB trial in HERNEG BC patients with disease progression (PD) on Bev maintenance ...

Abstract Team sports are frequently studied by researchers. There is presumption that scoring in basketball is a random process and that can be described using the Poisson Model. Basketball is a collaboration-opposition sport, where the non-linear local interactions among players are reflected in the evolution of the score that ultimately determines the winner. In the NBA, the outcomes of close games are often decided in the last minute, where fouls play a main role. We examined 6130 NBA games in ...

This work presents a methodology for analysing the interactions between players in a football team, from the point of view of graph theory and complex networks. We model the complex network of passing interactions between players of a same team in 32 official matches of the Liga de Fútbol Profesional (Spain), using a passing/reception graph. This methodology allows us to understand the play structure of the team, by analysing the offensive phases of game-play. We utilise two different strategies ...

The degree of overall competitiveness of a sport league is a complex phenomenon. It is difficult to assess and quantify all elements that yield the final standing. In this paper, we analyze the general behavior of the result matrices of each season and we use the corresponding results as a probably density.
