The involvement of the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) in liver graft acceptance is controversial, but the frequency of acute rejection (AR) remains high in spite of the use of the modern immunosuppressive agents. The present study was aimed at determining whether an association exists between liver recipient HLA-C polymorphism and AR development that could influence graft acceptance. Four hundred and forty-six liver recipients and 473 controls were studied within the framework of a collaborative study ...

The anticipatory recognition of braking is essential to prevent traffic accidents. For instance, driving assistance systems can be useful to properly respond to emergency braking situations. Moreover, the response time to emergency braking situations can be affected and even increased by different driver's cognitive states caused by stress, fatigue, and extra workload. This work investigates the detection of emergency braking from driver's electroencephalographic (EEG) signals that precede the brake ...

Abstract The surface roughness of agricultural soils is mainly related to the type of tillage performed, typically consisting of oriented and random components. Traditionally, soil surface roughness (SSR) characterization has been difficult due to its high spatial variability and the sensitivity of roughness parameters to the characteristics of the instruments, including its measurement scale. Recent advances in surveying have greatly improved the spatial resolution, extent, and availability of surface ...

Abstract Background No short patient-reported outcome (PRO) instruments assess overall health status across different obstructive lung diseases. Thus, the wording of the introduction to the Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Assessment Test (CAT) was modified to permit use in asthma and/or COPD. This tool is called the Chronic Airways Assessment Test (CAAT). Methods The psychometric properties of the CAAT were evaluated using baseline data from the NOVELTY study (NCT02760329) in patients with ...

Background and purpose Although the causes of multiple sclerosis ( MS ) remain partially unknown, environmental and genetic factors are thought to play a role in its aetiopathogenesis. Hypovitaminosis D, Epstein–Barr virus ( EBV ) and human herpesvirus 6 ( HHV ‐6) infections have been described as possible MS triggers. Our aim was to analyse the possible link between 25‐hydroxyvitamin D [25( OH )D] and viruses in patients with MS . Methods We included 482 patients with MS in a 2‐year study. Serum samples were ...

The anomalous currents of two-flavor chiral nuclear matter in the presence of chiral imbalance are computed, using recently developed methods exploiting generalized transgression, which facilitates the evaluation of both the equilibrium partition function and the covariant currents. The constitutive relations for both the broken and unbroken phase of the theory are studied and the out-of-equilibrium nondissipative transport coefficients determined. In the superfluid phase, the vector covariant currents ...

Stress remains a significant social problem for individuals in modern societies. This paper presents a machine learning approach for the automatic detection of stress of people in a social situation by combining two sensor systems that capture physiological and social responses. We compare the performance using different classifiers including support vector machine, AdaBoost, and [Formula: see text]-nearest neighbor. Our experimental results show that by combining the measurements from both sensor ...

A new colorimetric method based on the bleaching of the iodoplatinate ion has been developed for fast and easy determination of γ-glutamyl-S-ethenyl-cysteine (GEC) in narbon vetch (Vicia narbonensis L.) seeds. The calibration curve showed a good correlation (r2 = 0.9959) between absorbance and GEC amounts from 5.5 to 33 μg (10–59.78 μmol/L). The limits of detection and quantification were 1.16 and 3.55 μmol/L, respectively, and no significant interferences from other sulfur-containing compounds were observed. ...

The origin of the primary tumor is sometimes difficult to determine in peritoneal and ovarian metastases. A series of 25 metastatic tumors to the ovary and 7 cases of peritoneal carcinomatosis of suspected gynecologic origin were collected. Total RNA was extracted from frozen tumor tissue and studied by the Tissue of Origin-Frozen test, a microarray-based gene expression test from Pathwork Diagnostics (Redwood City, CA). Independently, formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tumor tissue was subjected ...

A bstract We apply differential geometry methods to the computation of the anomaly-induced hydrodynamic equilibrium partition function. Implementing the imaginary-time prescription on the Chern-Simons effective action on a stationary background, we obtain general closed expressions for both the invariant and anomalous part of the partition function. This is applied to the Wess-Zumino-Witten action for Goldstone modes, giving the equilibrium partition function of superfluids. In all cases, we also ...

The electrochemical reduction of imazapyr at the static mercury drop electrode was studied by cyclic voltammetry as a function of pH in aqueous buffered media. The process leads to the double bond reduction in the imidazoline moiety in all media. The products have been isolated by controlled-potential electrolyses and identified by high performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry measurements and , , and IR spectra. Although no chiral auxiliary was used, a moderate diasteroisomeric excess ...

A bstract Using the similarity between spacetime torsion and axial gauge couplings, we study torsional contributions to the equilibrium partition function in a stationary background. In the case of a charged fluid minimally coupled to torsion, we spot the existence of linear torsional magnetic and vortical effects, while the axial-vector current and the spin energy potential do not receive corrections in the torsion at linear order. The covariant energy-momentum tensor, on the other hand, does contain ...

Abstract Field techniques allow accurate direct measurements on gully geometry, even in three‐dimensional (3D) coordinates. Accuracy and detail reproduction is limited mainly by experimental setup and density of measurements, and less so by the precision of the measuring equipment. In contrast, remote‐sensing techniques permit the coverage of large study areas with a minimum of time and effort. However, the indirect measurements from imagery are known to depend on factors like image resolution, quality ...
