Aim : The effects of gender on the association between apolipoprotein E genotype and plasma lipid levels remain unclear in children. The aim of the present work was to evaluate these gender differences in a large population‐based sample of 6–7‐y‐old children, free of the effects of sex hormones. Methods : Lipid levels and apo E genotypes were studied in a sample of 1255 (631 M, 624 F) Caucasian schoolchildren, aged 6–7 (mean age, 6.7) y in Spain. Results : A significant effect of the apo E genotype on plasma ...

We address the problem of long-term dynamics of tuberculosis (TB) and latent tuberculosis (LTB) in semiclosed communities. These communities are congregate settings with the potential for sustained daily contact for weeks, months, and even years between their members. Basic examples of these communities are prisons, but certain urban/rural communities, some schools, among others could possibly fit well into this definition. These communities present a sort of ideal conditions for TB spread. In order ...

ABSTRACT INTRODUCTION Health systems are one determinant of health; their role is to facilitate timely and equitable access to quality services. The way in which a health system is organized can profoundly affect achievement of its objectives. The main feature of the Chilean health system is the coexistence of a public health insurance program (based on a social insurance model) with several market-based private health insurance companies. This hybrid structure provides an interesting framework for ...

Abstract An outbreak of meningococcal disease with a case-fatality rate of 30% and caused by predominantly serogroup W of Neisseria meningitidis began in Chile in 2012. This outbreak required a case−control study to assess determinants and risk factors for infection. We identified confirmed cases during January 2012−March 2013 and selected controls by random sampling of the population, matched for age and sex, resulting in 135 case-patients and 618 controls. Sociodemographic variables, habits, and ...

ABSTRACT The Las Minas area corresponds to an exhumed geothermal system considered a proxy for the deep part of the nearby Los Humeros active geothermal system. The stratigraphic succession is made up of: Palaeozoic-Miocene granitoids, a thick Jurassic- Cretaceous carbonate succession, Neogene lava flows and volcano-sedimentary deposits. Linked to a Miocene magma intrusion, marble and skarn rock-volumes developed by contact metamorphism and geothermal fluid flow. Faults are arranged in SW- and NNW- ...

Abstract Background Seroprevalence studies provide an accurate measure of SARS-CoV-2 spread and the presence of asymptomatic cases. They also provide information on the uneven impact of the pandemic, pointing out vulnerable groups to prioritize which is particularly relevant in unequal societies. However, due to their high cost, they provide limited evidence of spatial spread of the pandemic specially in unequal societies. Our objective was to estimate the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in ...

The number of elderly people is projected to double in the next 50 years worldwide, resulting in an increased prevalence of neurodegenerative diseases. Aging causes changes in brain tissue homeostasis, thus contributing to the development of neurodegenerative disorders. Current treatments are not entirely effective, so alternative treatments or adjuvant agents are being actively sought. Antioxidant properties of phenolic compounds are of particular interest for neurodegenerative diseases whose psychopathological ...

Introduction According to the International Labor Organization, Maternity Protection (MP) policies try to harmonize child care and women's paid work, without affecting family health and economic security. Chile Law 20.545 (2011) increased benefits for economically active women and reduced requirements for accessing these benefits. The goals of the reform included: 1) to increase MP coverage; and 2) to reduce inequities in access to the benefits. Method This study uses two data sources. First, using ...

Materials & methods: Olea europaea pollen-sensitized mice were treated with olea plus aluminum hydroxide, calcium phosphate, monophosphoryl lipid A (MPL) or immunostimulatory sequences (ISS). Results: Aluminum hydroxide seems to drive initially to a Th2-type response. Bacteria-derived adjuvants (MPL and ISS) skew the immune response toward Th1 and Treg pathways. Specific-IgE ...

The degradation mechanism of NH4+/NH3 in aqueous solutions by heterogeneous photocatalysis (TiO2/SiO2) and photolysis in UV-C pilot photoreactor has been studied. Under the conditions used, NH4+/NH3 can be decomposed both by photolytically and photocatalytically, without disregarding stripping processes. The greatest degradation is achieved at the highest pH studied (pH 11.0) and at higher lamp irradiation power used (25 W) with degradation performances of 44.1% (photolysis) and 59.7% (photocatalysis). ...

The demand for foods in central Chile is increasing and arable land is expanding rapidly onto floodplain soils, which are being cleared for maize cultivation. After harvest, a significant amount of residual nitrogen (N) may be still present in the soil in autumn-winter, when a high risk of nitrate leaching (NL) is expected due to occasional flooding events.Determining nitrate (NO 3 -) movement through the vadose zone is essential for studying the impact of agricultural practices on surface water quality. ...

Hot springs and related deposits are common features in active geothermal areas around the world. In this study, centered on the Ixtlán de los Hervores geothermal zone (Michoacán, Mexico), we analyzed the distribution of active hydrothermal manifestations and hot-spring deposits as well as the local stratigraphy to determine the influence of the faults in the hydrothermal fluid circulation. The hydrothermal manifestations are mainly represented by hot springs with water temperatures up to 92 °C (depositing ...
