The BAG3 (BLC2-associated athanogene 3) gene codes for an antiapoptotic protein located on the sarcomere Z-disc. Mutations in BAG3 are associated with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), but only a small number of cases have been reported to date, and the natural history of BAG3 cardiomyopathy is poorly understood. This study sought to describe the phenotype and prognosis of BAG3 mutations in a large multicenter DCM cohort. The study cohort comprised 129 individuals with a BAG3 mutation (62% males, 35.1 ± ...

While interleukin 2 (IL-2) is capable of inducing a marked expansion of the CD4 T-lymphocyte pool, limited data exist on whether IL-2 treatment can add significantly to the immunologic and virologic effects of potent antiretroviral therapy (ART).To determine the rate and magnitude of CD4 cell recovery and viral suppression when using a combination therapy of IL-2 and ART compared with ART alone.Randomized, controlled multicenter trial conducted from April 1996 through April 1998 at 8 clinical sites ...

Zika virus is a mosquito-borne viral disease that emerged as a significant health problem in the Americas after an epidemic in 2015. Especially concerning are cases where Zika is linked to the development of brain abnormalities in newborns. Unlike other flaviviruses, Zika can be transmitted sexually, increasing the potential for intraspecies infection. Several reports show that the virus can persist for months in the testis of males after clearance of viremia, and that females are highly susceptible ...

This survey provides an overview with a broad coverage of the literature on methods for temporal disaggregation and benchmarking. Dozens of methods, procedures and algorithms have been proposed in the statistical and economic literature to solve the problem of transforming a low-frequency series into a high-frequency one. This paper classifies and reviews the procedures, provides interesting discussion on the history of the methodological development in this literature and permits to identify the ...

Abstract Subnational regional jurisdictions rarely have at their disposal a reasonable array of timely statistics to monitor their economic condition. In light of this, we develop a procedure that simultaneously estimates a quarterly time series for all regions of a country based upon quarterly national and annual regional data. While other such techniques exist, we suggest a temporal error structure that eliminates possible spurious jumps. Using our approach, regional analysts should now be able ...

Abstract Heart diseases are associated with changes in the biomechanical properties of the myocardial wall. However, there is no modality available to assess myocardial stiffness directly. Brillouin microspectroscopy (mBS) is a consolidated mechanical characterization technique, applied to the study of the viscoelastic and elastic behavior of biological samples and may be a valuable tool for assessing the viscoelastic properties of the cardiac tissue. In this work, viscosity and elasticity were assessed ...

Countless examples of misleading forecasts on behalf of both campaign and exit polls affecting, among others, British, French, and Spanish elections could be found. This has seriously damaged their image. Therefore, procedures should be used that minimize errors, especially on election night when errors are more noticeable, in order to maintain people's trust in surveys. This paper proposes a method to obtain quick and early outcome forecasts on the election night. The idea is to partly sample some ( ...

The purpose of this research is to investigate the evolution of elongated warm eddies. A shallow-water, reduced-gravity, primitive equation model is used to perform a multicase numerical experiment, which includes vortices of very different eccentricities and strengths. The above is partly motivated by the increased number of oceanic observations, performed in recent years, that show the wide variety of warm eddies. Under the assumption that an eddy can be approximately described as a solid-body ...

BackgroundDilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is characterized by idiopathic dilation and systolic contractile dysfunction of the cardiac chambers. The present work aimed to study the alterations in gene expression of ion channels involved in cardiomyocyte function. Methods and ResultsMicroarray profiling using the Affymetrix Human Gene® 1.0 ST array was performed using 17 RNA samples, 12 from DCM patients undergoing cardiac transplantation and 5 control donors (CNT). The analysis focused on 7 cardiac ion ...

AL amyloidosis is a rare condition whose management is undergoing changes due to recent advances in diagnosis and treatment. We describe a contemporary series of patients with AL amyloidosis to analyze the features that enable early diagnosis and optimal management. We recruited for analysis 32 patients (19 women; mean age, 63 years) treated consecutively at our center. Eighty-four percent of the patients presented with asthenia, dyspnea or edema, with a previous duration of symptoms of 8 months ( ...

Overactivity of phosphoribosylpyrophosphate synthetase (PRS) is an X chromosome-linked disorder of purine metabolism that is characterized by gout with uric acid overproduction and, in some families, neurodevelopmental impairment. We present the case of a 24-year-old Spanish woman with renal colic and hyperuricemia, which first manifested at age 11 years. Results of enzymatic and genetic studies supported the view that accelerated purine nucleotide and uric acid production in this woman resulted ...

Monoclonal gammopathies (MGs) are a wide range of diseases that may evolve or progress over time. Comorbidity plays a critical role in this setting. The co-occurrence of two MGs is not a rare event. The evidence on the association of systemic light chain (AL) amyloidosis and multiple myeloma (MM) is scarce and controversial. Herein we aim to address this topic in a large series of patients of a referral center. All consecutive AL amyloidosis patients treated at our center from January 2005 to April ...

The presence of various Cu forms associated to different soil aggregate sizes influences their availability to plants and their leaching to surface and subsurface waters. In this work, the speciation of Cu of essentially anthropogenic origin between aggregates of variable size in vineyard soils was studied and compared with that of Zn, which is assumed to come largely from natural sources. The copper concentrations were found to exceed the zinc concentrations in all soils and particle size fractions ...

Discoveries made during the last 20 years have revealed a genetic origin in many cases of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). Currently, over 40 genes have been associated with the disease. Mutations in DCM-causing genes induce the condition through a variety of different pathological pathways with complex and not completely understood mechanisms. Genes that encode for sarcomeric, cytoskeletal, nuclear membrane, dystrophin-associated glycoprotein complex and desmosomal proteins are the principal genes ...

Abstract In mammals, chronic diseases resulting from infectious agents have been associated with functional T cell response deficiency, a high frequency of terminally differentiated T cells, the presence of monofunctional Ag-specific T cells, and increased expression of inhibitory receptors. Similar to other chronic diseases, the progressive loss of certain functional activities during Trypanosoma cruzi infection might result in the inability to control replication of this parasite. To examine this ...
