Indoor environmental conditions in classrooms, in particular temperature and indoor air quality, influence students’ health, attitude and performance. In recent years, several studies regarding indoor environmental quality of classrooms were published and natural ventilation proved to have great potential, particularly in southern European climate. This research aimed to evaluate indoor environmental conditions in eight schools and to assess their improvement potential by simple natural ventilation ...

Acoustic measurements were performed in eight schools of different levels of education (from kindergarten to college) located in Viseu – Portugal. The acoustic evaluation was made in order to analyze the most common problems that may condition the acoustic environment inside school building. The acoustics evaluation of school buildings was made by the measurement of: reverberation time in classrooms; sound insulation between classrooms and between classrooms and corridors; impact sound insulation of ...

The acoustic evaluation was performed so as to analyse the most common problems that may condition the acoustic environment inside school cafeterias. The acoustic evaluation of the school cafeterias was carried out by measuring the reverberation time and continuous sound level during meals. The reverberation ...

Background Truncating pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants of CDH1 cause hereditary diffuse gastric cancer (HDGC), a tumour risk syndrome that predisposes carrier individuals to diffuse gastric and lobular breast cancer.Rare CDH1 missense variants are often classified as variants of unknown significance. We conducted a genotypephenotype analysis in families carrying rare CDH1 variants, comparing cancer spectrum in carriers of pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants (PV/LPV; analysed jointly) or ...

In this paper the influence of the neutral in the thermal performance of a three‐phase squirrel cage induction motor fed by asymmetrical supply voltages is studied and analysed. A 2D finite element formulation was used to solve the steady‐state heat transfer problem. The eddy currents in the rotor bars were evaluated using a combined 3D finite element approach with analytical expressions. The numerical solutions are compared with measured experimental results obtained in laboratory tests for two ...

Over the last 20 years, gender relations and how they are experienced, represented and put into practice have undergone deep changes. It is vital to understand this process more deeply and clearly, especially with regards to the power and control dynamics involved, and within the scope of Portuguese-speaking countries. In the backdrop of these reconfigurations and interests, the Revista Lusofona de Estudos Culturais (Lusophone Journal of Cultural Studies) publishes in its 5th issue a set of contributions ...

Many postural and therapeutic protocols rely on reestablishing idealized levels of symmetry, specifically, left–right symmetry. For example, the ninth edition of the American College of Sports Medicine’s Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription states that a “training program should induce symmetrical and balanced muscular development” [1]. There is even a clinic called Symmetry Physical Therapy ( https://www.symmetry-physicaltherapy.com/ ). Contrariwise, the rationale developed so far suggests ...

There is evidence that skeletal asymmetries in the bones of the upper limbs have been intimately related to right-hand dominance since the dawn of the genus Homo; this type of asymmetry is also believed to have occurred in Neanderthals [1]. An anthropological study of 780 Holocene adult humans has shown that modern humans present bilateral asymmetry in the length and especially in the diaphyseal breath of long bones (e.g., the femur) [2]. Furthermore, the authors found a systematic right-bias in all ...

Many daily activities are typified by automated routines, most of which we are not even aware of. From brushing our teeth to holding and eating an apple, to opening doors, to driving, the number of hours spent daily performing highly asymmetric actions is considerable. Overall, human movement does not fit with the notion of perfect symmetry [1]. Writing is perhaps the best example of how asymmetries make our actions more efficient, as humans spend countless hours of their lives writing, especially ...

Based on the knowledge portrayed in the previous chapters, it would be surprising if asymmetries were not a factor in athletic performance. Ask a person to get ready to sprint, and that person will most likely always (and unconsciously) put the same foot forward. Ask a person to punch or kick a boxing bag as hard as possible, and their lateral preferences will tend to be very strong. These preferences are self-evident and can be easily accessed. But even in scenarios where it would be theoretically ...

The goal of this work was to convey that asymmetry, far from being a prejudicial concept, is a prerequisite for our existence, as it is found even in the form of matter–antimatter asymmetry [1, 2] and as far back as the creation of time itself [3]. Across a wide variety of levels, asymmetry emerges as an efficient solution [4] and provides the foundation upon which structures develop. Asymmetry is present in the rotation of subatomic particles [5], topological superconductors [6], and geostatistical ...

Physics has established that reality relies on a series of phase transitions, resulting in symmetry-breaking events [1], and this can be extended to chemistry as well [2]. At a fundamental level, electrons and quarks, two elementary constituents of matter, have an intrinsic angular momentum—the spin—which, by convention, is said to be left-handed when rotation is clockwise and right-handed when it is anticlockwise. Only left-handed particles experience weak interaction or force, thus violating parity ...

Urachal sinus (US) is a rare congenital abnormality resulting from the improper involution of embryological tissues connecting the bladder to the umbilicus. It typically presents in childhood but can remain asymptomatic into adulthood. A 70-year-old male with hypertension and dyslipidemia presented with periumbilical pain, swelling, and purulent discharge. Initial empirical treatment with antibiotics was ineffective. Further imaging revealed fluid collections consistent with an infected urachal sinus. ...

The sepsis burden on acute care services in middle-income countries is a cause for concern. We estimated incidence, prevalence, and mortality of sepsis in adult Brazilian intensive care units (ICUs) and association of ICU organisational factors with outcome. We did a 1-day point prevalence study with follow-up of patients in ICU with sepsis in a nationally representative pseudo-random sample. We produced a sampling frame initially stratified by geographical region. Each stratum was then stratified ...

Introduction “It happened in brazil too”. This is how, rather emphatically, Manuel Castells begins his afterword to the Brazilian edition of his book, “Networks of Outrage and Hope: Social Movements in the Internet Age”, first published in 2013. Even if explicitly uncertain of the possible results of that year’s demonstrations occurring in Brazil, the sociologist identifies digital networks as creating autonomy and providing a path from individuals’ hope to outrage. In that moment, a mass of ...
