Primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) is characterised by an inappropriate over production of parathyroid hormone and it is the most frequent pathological condition of the parathyroid glands. A minority of the cases belong to familial forms, but most of them are sporadic. The genetic alterations underlying the sporadic forms of pHPT remain poorly understood. The main goal of our study is to perform the molecular characterisation of a series of sporadic pHPT cases. We have studied matched blood and tumour ...

Although Solanum nigrum L. is a phytoremediator for different metals, its growth and physiology are still compromised by toxic levels of zinc (Zn). Thus, the development of eco-friendly strategies to enhance its tolerance, maintaining remediation potential is of special interest. This study evaluated the potential of 24-epibrassinolide (24-EBL) to boost S. nigrum defence against Zn towards a better growth rate and remediation potential. After 24 days of exposure, the results revealed that Zn-mediated ...

Methylphenidate (MPH) is the classic treatment for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) among children and adults. Despite its beneficial effects, non-medical use of MPH is nowadays a problem with high impact on society. Thus, our goal was to uncover the neurovascular and cognitive effects of MPH chronic use during a critical period of development in control conditions. For that, male Wistar Kyoto rats were treated with MPH (1.5 or 5 mg/kg/day at weekdays, per os) from P28 to P55. We concluded ...

Abstract Circulating cell-free DNA (cfDNA) consists of small fragments of DNA that circulate freely in the bloodstream. In cancer patients, a fraction of cfDNA is derived from tumour cells, therefore containing the same genetic and epigenetic alterations, and is termed circulating cell-free tumour DNA. The potential use of cfDNA, the so-called ‘liquid biopsy’, as a non-invasive cancer biomarker has recently received a lot of attention. The present review will focus on studies concerning the potential ...

Abstract Plastic pollution is distributed patchily around the world’s oceans. Likewise, marine organisms that are vulnerable to plastic ingestion or entanglement have uneven distributions. Understanding where wildlife encounters plastic is crucial for targeting research and mitigation. Oceanic seabirds, particularly petrels, frequently ingest plastic, are highly threatened, and cover vast distances during foraging and migration. However, the spatial overlap between petrels and plastics is poorly ...

Degenerative aortic valve disease (AVD) is a complex disorder that goes beyond valve itself, also undermining aortic wall. We aimed to assess the ascending aortic mechanics with two-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography (2DSTE) in patients with aortic regurgitation (AR) and hypothesized a relationship with degree of AR. Aortic mechanics were then compared with those of similarly studied healthy controls and patients with aortic stenosis (AS); finally, we aimed to assess the prognostic significance ...

Earth's surface is a result of complex tectonic and erosional processes shaping landscapes and producing transient signs of different evolutionary stages. These transient signs are formed by a gradual adjustment of rivers to an equilibrium stage through channel incision and uplift. This integrated study of geomorphic indices in bedrock rivers ...
