The heart, like most mammalian organs, is influenced by circadian patterns. The suprachiasmatic nucleus in the hypothalamus has a key role in this influence, via various neurohumoral factors, particularly the autonomic nervous system. In addition, a local cardiac peripheral clock might drive a circadian rhythm related to the expression of ion channels. Several myocardial functions are influenced by these circadian cycles including activity/rest, regeneration, nutrient storage, growth, and myocardial ...

Abstract Introduction and objectives Heart transplantation (HT) is the treatment for patients with end‐stage heart disease. Despite contradictory reports, survival seems to be worse when donor/recipient sex is mismatched. This systematic review and meta‐analysis aims to synthesize the evidence on the effect of donor/recipient sex mismatch after HT. Methods We searched PubMed and EMBASE until November 2017. Comparative cohort and registry studies were included. Published articles were systematically ...

The electrocardiogram (ECG) presents substantial changes associated with aging. In fact, the likelihood of having a "normal" ECG decreases with age. The most common findings are left ventricular hypertrophy pattern, leftward axis deviation and QRS widening. Interatrial block (IAB) is frequently present, mainly partial IAB. Atrial fibrillation prevalence raises from 6–7% in those aged 65–74 years to 13–17% in those > 75 years.

Extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP) has been used for treatment of steroid-refractory graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) with encouraging results. However, only a few pediatric centers have experienced with ECP, mainly by technical difficulties of leukapheresis in children. We retrospectively analyzed 27 patients treated during 5 years with ECP for steroid-refractory acute and chronic GVHD. We performed an "off-line" approach using a continuous flow cell separator (Cobe Spectra) and a Ultraviolet A irradiator ( ...

Opening the cluster core: Substitution of the chloride ligand in the novel cationic cluster [W(3)CuS(4)H(3)Cl(dmpe)(3)](+) (see figure; dmpe=1,2-bis(dimethylphosphino)ethane) by acetonitrile is promoted by water addition. Kinetic and density functional theory studies lead to a mechanistic proposal in which acetonitrile or water attack causes the opening of the cluster core with dissociation of one of the Cu--S bonds to accommodate the entering ligand.Reaction of the incomplete cuboidal cationic cluster [ ...

There is limited experience in the use of peripheral blood progenitor cells (PBPC) for allogeneic transplantation in children. In the present study we compared engraftment kinetics, incidence of acute and chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) and the outcome and economic costs of allogeneic PBPCT vs BMT in children with ALL in a single institution. All children were transplanted in complete remission (CR) with a similar conditioning regimen and the same GVHD prophylaxis. Patients undergoing PBPCT ...

A simple strategy for the synthesis of highly symmetric macrocycles incorporating carbohydrates is presented. The application of this strategy to the synthesis of optically active tetra-gluco-24-crown-8 (1), bis-gluco-15-crown-5 (3), and bis-gluco-21-crown-8 (5) is described. Preliminary studies showed that macrocycles 1, 3 and 5 complex ammonium salts. These macrocyclic compounds have been used as catalysts in the asymmetric Michael addition of methyl α-phenylacetate to methyl acrylate.

In this work we use molecular dynamics simulations to study the diffusion of N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) and H2O as a function of temperature within the well-known metal-organic framework Co2(dobdc)·[G] (G = 2DMF·1H2O), also known as Co-MOF-74. The molecular dynamics simulations show that the diffusivity of guest molecules, which is almost negligible at low temperatures (T < 200 K), increases in the range of 200 < T (K) < 400 up to 3 and 4 orders of magnitude for DMF and H2O, respectively. This molecular diffusion ...

Ionic liquids (ILs) and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have been lately the solvents of choice in a number of processes because they offer a valid alternative to conventional solvents. Despite main interactions in ILs differ from those in DESs (e.g., electrostatic-type in the former and H-bond-type in the latter), these two neoteric solvents are more closely related that appeared and can be seen as the two sides, the face and the cross, of the same coin. Herein, we hypothesized about a way for transitioning ...

Abstract Solution‐processed quasi‐2D perovskites are promising for stable and efficient solar cells because of their superior environmental stability compared to 3D perovskites and tunable optoelectronic properties. Changing the number of inorganic layers ( n ) sandwiched between the organic spacers allows for tuning of the bandgap. However, narrowing the phase distribution around a specific n‐ value is a challenge. In‐situ UV–vis–NIR absorption spectroscopy is used to time‐resolve the crystallization ...

Halide perovskites make efficient solar cells but suffer from several stability issues. The characterization of these degradation processes is challenging because of the limited spatiotemporal resolution in experiments and the absence of efficient computational methods to study these reactive processes. Here, we present the first reactive force field for molecular dynamics simulations of the phase instability and the defect-induced degradation in CsPbI3. We find that the phase transitions are driven ...

In recent years, metal halide perovskites (MHPs) for optoelectronic applications have attracted the attention of the scientific community due to their outstanding performance. The fundamental understanding of their physicochemical properties is essential for improving their efficiency and stability. Atomistic and molecular simulations have played an essential role in the description of the optoelectronic properties and dynamical behavior of MHPs, respectively. However, the complex interplay of the ...

In view of the increasingly severe global warming and ocean acidification caused by CO2 emissions, we report a new procedure, named "reactive separation", to capture CO2. We used advanced Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics methods to simulate the water–gas shift reaction in single-walled carbon nanotubes. We found that (11,11) carbon nanotubes with a diameter of 0.75 nm have the best ability to capture CO2 generated in the water–gas shift reaction. When the feed water–gas ratio is 1:1, the pressure ...

For many years, the performance of Li-ion batteries (LIBs) and supercapacitors (SCs) has relied mainly on two factors, (1) the optimization of electrodes composition and/or structure and (2) the selection of salts or ionic liquids (ILs) matching well with the compositional and/or structural features of electrodes. Solvents included in electrolyte composition have been typically seen as a mere medium where the electrochemically active salts or ILs are dissolved or mixed. More recently, attention has also ...

Aqueous dilutions of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have lately allowed exploring new and more demanding applications where neat DESs are not able to perform well. However, the use of DES dilutions with nonaqueous hydrogen-bond-forming solvents remains basically unexplored. It is worth noting the obvious interest of using organic solvents in those cases where any reagent or byproduct is nonsoluble, nonmiscible, or unstable in water, the presence of water might alter the reaction kinetics (for instance, ...

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are lately expanding their use to more demanding applications upon aqueous dilution thanks to the preservation of the most appealing properties of the original DESs while overcoming some of their most important drawbacks limiting their performance, like viscosity. Both experimental and theoretical works have studied this dilution regime, the so-called "water-in-DES" system, at near-to stoichiometric amounts to the original DES. Herein, we rather studied the high-dilution ...
