The study of protein interactions has generated great interest in the food industry. Therefore, research on new supramolecular structures shows promise. Supramolecular structures of the whey proteins α-lactalbumin and glycomacropeptide were produced under varying heat treatments (25 to 75°C) and acidic conditions (pH3.5 to 6.5). Isothermal titration calorimetry experiments showed protein interactions and demonstrated that this is an enthalpically driven process. Supramolecular protein structures in ...

ProtozoaDB (http://www.biowebdb.org/protozoadb) is being developed to initially host both genomics and post-genomics data from Plasmodium falciparum, Entamoeba histolytica, Trypanosoma brucei, T. cruzi and Leishmania major, but will hopefully host other protozoan species as more genomes are sequenced. It is based on the Genomics Unified Schema and offers a modern Web-based interface for user-friendly data visualization and exploration. This database is not intended to duplicate other similar efforts ...

The standard (p∘ = 0.1 MPa) molar enthalpies of formation in the crystalline state of hydroxyapatite, chlorapatite and a preliminary value for bromapatite, at T = 298.15 K, were determined by reaction-solution calorimetry as: ΔfHm∘[Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2,cr]=-(13399±11)kJ·mol-1,ΔfHm∘[Ca10(PO4)6Cl2,cr]=-(13231±82)kJ·mol-1,andΔfHm∘[Ca10(PO4)6Br2,cr]=-(13063±81)kJ·mol-1. A critical assessment of these results and of previously published data is made. Finally, the standard molar enthalpy of formation of iodapatite ...

Galls are anomalies in plant development from parasitic origin, and affect cellular differentiation or growth of plants. This parasite-plant interaction occurs in many environments and typically in vegetative organs of plants. The existence of galls in reproductive organs and their effects on the host plant are seldom described in the literature. In this paper, we present a novel study of galls in plants of the neotropical region. Galls of Bruggmmaniella byrsonimae develop in the flower buds of ...

SUMMARY Running scientific workflows in distributed and heterogeneous environments has been a motivating approach for provenance management, which is loosely coupled to the workflow execution engine. This kind of approach is interesting because it allows both storage and access to provenance data in a homogeneous way, even in an environment where different workflow management systems work together. However, current approaches overload scientists with many ad hoc tasks, such as script adaptations ...

One of the main challenges of scientific experiments is to allow scientists to manage and exchange their scientific computational resources (data, programs, models, etc.). The effective management of such experiments requires a specific set of cardinal facilities, such as experiment specification techniques, workflow derivation heuristics and provenance mechanisms. These facilities may characterise the experiment life cycle into three phases: composition, execution, and analysis. Works concerned ...

With improvements in computing and communications, the amount of scientific data in agriculture has been exploding. Thus, researchers must rely on computational simulations to model the data-driven in silico agronomic experiments, the in silico experiments are those that are completely executed by using computer models. Reproducibility, transparency, independent verification are major features of Science. However, even agricultural research of exemplary quality may have irreproducible empirical ...

In an endemic area of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Rio de Janeiro State where a mule had been found infected, a systematic search among equines was performed, resulting in the detection of Leishmania parasites in skin lesions of 30.8% of the animals, which included horses and mules. The eventual role of equines in the epidemiology of the human disease is being investigated.

This study aimed to evaluate economically the inclusion of prebiotics, probiotics and symbiotics in diets of Nile tilapia (4.07 ± 0.30 g), at two stocking densities (0.6 and 1.2 kg m-3). A total of 288 fish were distributed over 32 tanks (40 L) in a completely randomised design, in a 2 x 4 factorial (stocking density x additives), with four replications, over six weeks. The following were evaluated: total feed consumption (FC), final biomass (FB), relative gain in biomass (RGB), apparent feed conversion ( ...

Background and Objective . An individualized risk-based approach to the treatment of thyroid cancer is being extensively discussed in the recent literature. However, controversies about the ideal surgical approach remain an important issue with regard to the impact on prognosis and follow-up strategies. This study was designed to describe clinical outcomes in a cohort of low and intermediate risk thyroid cancer patients treated with thyroid lobectomy. Methods . This paper addresses the question of strength perception for vibration signals used in mobile devices. Employing devices similar to standard cell phones and using pulsed vibration signals to combat adaptation effects, experiments were performed to study the effect of weight and underlying on perceived strength. Results shows that for the same measured acceleration on the device, a heavier box is perceived to vibrate with greater strength. Furthermore, signals with higher underlying frequency are ...

Analysis of Δ9tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9THC) and its metabolites in biological samples is of great relevance for forensic purposes. In the case of oral fluid (OF), the analysis should determine Δ9THC, whereas in urine, it detects the inactive metabolite tetrahydrocannabinol carboxylic acid (THC-COOH). Most laboratories analyze Δ9THC in such samples using GC–MS methods, but these procedures are time-consuming and involve unavoidable previous extraction and derivatization. No data is yet available on the ...

ABSTRACT Integrins exist in different activation states on the surfaces of cells. Addition of the proper signal, ligand, or antibody can alter the activation state of these molecules. We report here the identification of two immunocytochemically distinct populations of β1 integrins on fixed embryonic chick dermal fibroblasts. One population, recognized by the integrin activating mAb TASC, localizes to discrete regions of the cell, most likely focal contacts. These integrins co-localize with other ...

This paper describes Christiansen grammar evolution (CGE), a new evolutionary automatic programming algorithm that extends standard grammar evolution (GE) by replacing context-free grammars by Christiansen grammars. GE only takes into account syntactic restrictions to generate valid individuals. CGE adds semantics to ensure that both semantically and syntactically valid individuals are generated. It is empirically shown that our approach improves GE performance and even allows the solution of some ...
