Abstract Copper (Cu) is an abundant metal in the environment coming from anthropogenic activities and natural sources that, in excess, easily becomes phytotoxic to most species, being its accumulation in plants considered an environmental threat. This study aimed to compare the physiological and molecular responses of Solanum lycopersicum and its wild counterpart Solanum cheesmaniae to Cu stress. In particular, we wanted to address the hypothesis that S. cheesmaniae is more adapted to Cu stress than ...

Ellagic acid (EA) has demonstrated remarkable antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. The corn protein zein is a natural biopolymer whose biological and functional properties encourage its use to improve therapeutic nano drug delivery systems. In this study, we aimed to design and characterize EA-loaded zein nanoparticles and to evaluate the impact of nanoencapsulation in the antioxidant and antibacterial properties. The nanoparticles were produced by nanoprecipitation and evaluated in terms of ...

Chitosan/zein films were developed for controlled release of ellagic acid using a central composite design to evaluate the effect of the polymers concentration on the films’ characteristics and its application as a wound bandaging platform. The films’ characteristics were predicted with quadratic models. Responses were found to depend on the composition of the film, with both polymers exerting a significant influence on the resulting thickness and contact angle (p < 0.05). Zein presented a significant ...

Ellagic acid (EA) has demonstrated several biological properties, such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, and enzymatic inhibition. Zein and chitosan (CHI) are natural polymers whose biological potential has also gained attention. Therefore, this paper aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial, antioxidant, anticollagenase, and antielastase properties of EA, zein, and chitosan isolated or in combination. The microdilution method was used to assess the minimum inhibitory and bactericide concentrations. The antioxidant ...

Our closest living relatives, chimpanzees and bonobos, have a complex demographic history. We analyzed the high-coverage whole genomes of 75 wild-born chimpanzees and bonobos from 10 countries in Africa. We found that chimpanzee population substructure makes genetic information a good predictor of geographic origin at country and regional scales. Multiple lines of evidence suggest that gene flow occurred from bonobos into the ancestors of central and eastern chimpanzees between 200,000 and 550,000 ...

The ability of a PCM device to store a continuum of resistance values can be exploited to realize arithmetic operations such as matrix-vector multiplications or to realize the synaptic efficacy in neural networks. These plants can establish root symbioses with nitrogen-fixing soil bacteria and are able to grow in nitrogen-poor soils. Medicago truncatula varieties show diverse adaptive responses to environmental conditions, such as saline soils. We have compared the differential root growth of two genotypes of M. truncatula (108-R and Jemalong A17) in response to salt stress. Jemalong A17 is more tolerant ...
