Virola surinamensis is an abundant floodplain tree, popularly known as ucuúba, that grows in the Amazon. In this study, ucuúba seed oil was obtained by supercritical fluid extraction under different operating conditions, as well as Soxhlet extraction. The operating conditions for supercritical extraction were an extraction temperature of 40, 60, or 80 °C, a pressure of 350 bar, and a CO2 mass flow of 7.9 × 10−5 kg/s. The supercritical extraction curves were fitted to mass transfer models, and the fatty ...

Dogs naturally infected with Leishmania Infantum (=L. chagasi) were treated with miltefosine using different therapeutic regimens. The animals were evaluated for clinical evolution, biochemical parameters, parasite load (by real-time PCR), cytokine levels and humoral response. After treatment and during the following 24 months, there was progressive clinical improvement and complete recovery in 50% (7/14) of the treated animals. There was a decrease in the smear positivity of the bone marrow after treatment, ...

In this review, we show Angiotensin-(1-7) as a novel Renin Angiotensin System mediator that antagonizes cardiovascular and proliferative effects of Angiotensin II and exerts complex renal actions. We also speculate the possibility of new drugs for the treatment of cardiovascular, genitourinary and hepatic diseases by interfering with ACE2-Angiotensin-(1-7)-Mas axis.

Struma Ovarii represents less than 3% of ovarian teratomas. The malignant counterpart is very rare.A 67-year-old female with ascites and progressive weight loss died of respiratory failure secondary to severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Autopsy revealed ascites, hepatic cirrhosis, emphysema, and bronchiectasis. As an incidental finding was seen a huge tumor (10 x 9.5 x 6 cm) in the left ovary. Multiple nodules were detected in the lungs. The thyroid was normal. Microscopy revealed a follicular ...

The compounds chalcone (1), 3,4,5-trimethoxychalcone (2) and 2,3,4,4'-tetramethoxychalcone (3) were biotransformed, respectively, in dihydrochalcone (4), 3,4,5-trimethoxydihydrochalcone (5) and 2,3,4,4'-tetramethoxydihydrochalcone (6). The structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods including 1D and 2D NMR techniques, and MS analysis. ...

BACKGROUND: Although crucial for health policies, there are few data on frequency of skin diseases in Brazil. OBJECTIVES: To generate data on the main dermatologic diagnoses in the country. METHODS: Diagnoses made at outpatient's visits were collected by a sample of dermatologists in their private offices and at 49 residency services, during one week (May 22-26, 2006). A form was filled in with clinical and demographic data, with no patient identification. RESULTS: The main diagnosis was acne accounting ...

This study characterized 52 Escherichia coli isolates from distinct diseased organs of 29 broiler chickens with clinical symptoms of colibacillosis in the Southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. Thirty-eight isolates were highly virulent and 14 were virtually avirulent in 1-day-old chicks, yet all isolates harbored virulence factors characteristic of avian pathogenic E. coli (APEC), including those related to adhesion, iron acquisition, and serum resistance. E. coli reference collection phylogenetic ...

Biodiesel is usually produced by transesterification reactions, by intermediate of a catalytic reaction in which a source of triglycerides (from vegetable, animal or residual oils) reacts with excess of alcohol producing as main product biodiesel and as side-product glycerol. After those reactions, it is usually necessary to purify the biodiesel produced by settling process. This step is followed by liquid–liquid extraction (wash up) unit operation. Systematic studies on biodiesel washing process, ...

Ascaris lumbricoides and Necator americanus are soil-transmitted parasites with global geographic distribution, and they represent some of the most common and neglected infections in the world. Periodic treatment with mass drug administration (MDA) in endemic areas is the recommended action put forth by the World Health Organization. However, MDA can cause the selection of subpopulations that possess the genetic ability to overcome the mechanism of drug action. In fact, beta-tubulin gene mutations ( ...

Abstract Given their copy number differences and unique modes of inheritance, the evolved gene content and expression of sex chromosomes is unusual. In many organisms the X and Y chromosomes are inactivated in spermatocytes, possibly as a defense mechanism against insertions into unpaired chromatin. In addition to current sex chromosomes, Drosophila has a small gene-poor X-chromosome relic (4 th ) that re-acquired autosomal status. Here we use single cell RNA-Seq on fly larvae to demonstrate that the ...

Three patients (2 males and 1 female) were selected for endodontic treatment of a uniradicular premolar and extraction of a third molar (without odontosection). Electric assessment of pulp vitality and computed tomographic imaging were undertaken followed by endodontic access and instrumentation using triantibiotic solution for irrigation in the host tooth.
