The objective of this study is to make cross-sectional ultrasonic quantitative tomography of the diaphysis of long bones. Ultrasonic propagation in bones is affected by the severe mismatch between the acoustic properties of this biological solid and those of the surrounding soft medium, namely, the soft tissues in vivo or water in vitro. Bone imaging is then a nonlinear inverse-scattering problem. In this paper, we showed that in vitro quantitative images of sound velocities in a human femur cross ...

Engineered Wood Parquet Flooring (EWF) is gaining popularity since it appeared in Europe in the 1970s. In 1999, two-thirds of the wood parquet installed in Europe was EWF; in the United States it was one third. Even though EWF has captured these market shares, knowledge of the product and its behavior is very limited. Relative humidity variations occurring between summer and winter conditions in North America can induce hygromechanical deformation and permanent fatigue in composite material, which ...

Previous studies have established that under normal conditions, adrenal HMG-CoA reductase activity is higher in hamsters than in rats and humans. The hamster reductase activity follows a diurnal rhythm corresponding to that of plasma ACTH and glucocorticoids [Endocrinology107 (1980) 215] but not to that of aldosterone. ACTH treatments to hamsters increased reductase activity after a latency of 60 min; this enhancement was prevented by cycloheximide [J. steroid Biochem. 24 (1986) 325]. Immunotitration ...

Significance Life on earth largely depends on the capture of light energy by plants through photosynthesis. Light is essential, but excess light is dangerous. Energy dissipation as heat is a major mechanism induced to protect the photosynthetic machinery. We report that UV-B perception by a specific photoreceptor in the nucleocytosolic compartment leads to protection of the photosynthetic machinery in the chloroplast of a green alga. The underlying mechanism is markedly different from the response ...

Cherubism is a rare genetic disease characterized by bilateral giant cell reparative granuloma of the jaws consisting of a fibrotic stroma with giant multinucleated cells (GMCs) and osteoclastic features. Cherubism severity is highly variable, and recurrence after surgery is the most important risk. Currently, there are no prognostic indicators. The aims of this study were to evaluate the osteoclastogenesis phenotype by histologic examination of nuclear factor of activated T cells 1 (NFATc1) localization ...

There are certain disadvantages associated with the use of isolated or cultured cells including the need to use proteolytic enzymes for their isolation and loss of tissue organization. In order to provide an in vitro system for toxicological studies that preserves tissue integrity, a method for preparation and incubation of adult rat liver slices has been developed. Fresh ultra-thin liver slices were produced in large quantities at a rapid rate under conditions that cause minimal tissue trauma. ...

Véronique Lefebvre, M. Vansteenbrugge, Véronique Beckers, Marcel Roberfroid, Pedro Buc Calderón,

Hepatocytes incubated at a pO2 of 0 mm Hg (N2/CO2, 95%/5%) loose their intracellular ATP content and their ability to synthesize RNA and proteins. Protein synthesis is virtually inhibited from the beginning of the incubation, while ATP content is gradually lost, thus suggesting a primary response of the cell to the absence of O2 rather than to ATP depletion. Such an early decrease of protein synthesis (as estimated as the incorporation of [14C]Leu into cell proteins) is unlikely the result of inhibition ...
