The osmoregulatory responses of 20 days of acclimation to environmental salinities of 5‰, 15‰, 25‰, 35‰ and 55‰ were assessed in juveniles of wedge sole (Dicologoglossa cuneata Moreau, 1881). This sole shows a good capacity to adapt to this range of environmental salinities. A direct linear relationship between environmental salinity and plasma osmolality was observed, with a calculated isosmotic point of 10.4‰ (284 mOsm kg−1). Na+, K+-ATPase activity in the gills followed a ‘U-shaped’ relationship ...

Physiological responses to a high stocking density were tested in juvenile wedge sole Dicologoglossa cuneata (Moreau). Fish were kept at low (1 kg m−2), medium (3 kg m−2) and high (9 kg m−2) stocking densities for 22 days. No differences in the weight, length, survival and hepatosomatic index were observed among treatments. Basal plasma cortisol and osmolality were found to be directly and positively related to stocking density. A mild increase in plasma glucose was seen at medium density, and plasma ...

This study reports egg production by captive wild brill Scophthalmus rhombus, a potential new flatfish species for Southern Europe-Mediterranean mariculture, as well as seasonal plasma levels of 17β–estradiol, testosterone, 11–ketotestosterone, proteins, triglycerides, glucose and lactate. A mean egg production of 102 800 eggs kg body weight−1 was achieved during the 2005 spawning period (January–March), although a continuous egg supply could only be obtained from some females, which had a higher ...

Abstract Epigenomic processes are believed to play a pivotal role for the effect of environmental exposures in early life to modify disease risk throughout the lifespan. Offspring of women with hypertensive complications of pregnancy (HTN PREG ) have an increased risk of developing systemic and pulmonary vascular dysfunction in adulthood. In this preliminary report, we sought to determine whether epigenetic modifications of genes involved in the regulation of vascular function were present in HTN PREG ...

Thirty Boophilus microplus strains from various geographic regions of Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Venezuela and Colombia were analyzed for the bm86 and bm95 gene. A fragment of cDNA of 794 base pairs of the parasite larvae, included between nucleotides 278–1071s, was amplified and cloned on the pGEM-T vector. Two random clones were sequenced for each population and the nucleotides 278–1071 and predicted amino acid sequences compared with the bm86 and bm95 genes. Variations from 1.76 to 3.65% were ...

Chronic mountain sickness (CMS) is considered to be a loss of ventilatory acclimatization to high altitude (>2500 m) resulting in marked arterial hypoxemia and polycythemia. This case–control study explores the possibility that sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) and associated oxidative stress contribute to the etiology of CMS. Nocturnal respiratory and SaO2 patterns were measured using standard polysomnography techniques and compared between male high-altitude residents (aged 18–25) with preclinical CMS ( ...

This article proposes a new methodology for enhancing SoC signal integrity without degrading performance in the presence of power-ground voltage transients. The underlying principle is the dynamic adaptation of the clock duty cycle to propagation delay variation along disturbed logic paths. This methodology makes digital circuits more robust to power line fluctuations while maintaining the at-speed clock rate.

The implementation of complex functionality in low-power (LP) nano-CMOS technologies must be carried out in the presence of enhanced susceptibility to PVT (Process, power supply Voltage and Temperature) variations. VT variations are environmental or operation-dependent parametric disturbances. Power constraints (in normal and test mode) are critical, especially for high-performance digital systems. Both dynamic and leakage power induce variable (in time and space) thermal maps across the chip. PVT variations ...

Enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) requires alternating anaerobic and aerobic (or anoxic) conditions to favour polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAO) against other bacteria. Due to its economical and ecological relevance, EBPR is currently a focus of interest in many environmental labs. A sequencing batch reactor (SBR) is used in most lab-scale EBPR systems in order to enrich the sludge with PAO. The management of these reactors is mostly based on off-line measurements such as volatile ...

The aim of this study was to carry out a comparative analysis of the osmoregulatory properties and associated energy metabolism of euryhaline flatfish species that are cultured in the world. Culture of flatfish (pleuronectiformes) requires stage- and species-dependent osmotic conditions for rearing. Additionally, geographic origin of broodstock animals is another factor to be taken into account for the culture of pleuronectiformes. Larval and juvenile stages of many flatfish species are cultured ...
