Low- and moderate-impact physical activity (PA) is associated with the prevention of urinary incontinence (UI). The objective of the cross-sectional study presented herein is to analyze the factors associated with UI in physically older active women who participate in senior community groups. The variable UI was measured by the International Consultation Incontinence Questionnaire Short Form (ICIQ-SF). Socioeconomic variables were also collected, along with data on life habits and clinical history. ...

In the present work, gold nanoparticles were synthesized through a green route by using, for the first time, polysaccharides extracted from pineapple gum (PG) as the reducing and capping agent. The obtained nanoparticles (AuNPs-PG) were characterized by UV-VIS, FTIR, TEM, FESEM, EDX, XRD, and zeta potential measurements, which confirmed that PG was effective to produce AuNPs with an average diameter of 10.3 ± 1.6 nm. The AuNPs-PG were employed as the modifier of glassy carbon paste electrodes (CPE/AuNPs- ...

Glassy polymeric carbon (GPC) is a useful material for medical applications due to its chemical inertness and biocompatible characteristics. Mitral and aortic and hydrocephalic valves are examples of GPC prosthetic devices that have been fabricated and commercialized in Brazil. In this work, ion beam was used to improve the mechanical characteristics of GPC surface and therefore to avoid the propagation of microcracks where the cardiac valves are more fragile. A control group of phenolic resin samples ...

Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is an inflammation-related cytokine associated with an elevated risk of cardiovascular events. In a previous study, we demonstrated that increased IL-6 was predictive of sub-clinical atherosclerotic coronary disease in intermediate-risk patients undergoing coronary angiography. In the present study, we investigated whether increased serum IL-6 is predictive of cardiovascular events in high-risk patients. In this observational study, consecutive patients referred for elective coronary ...

Phenolic resins when heat treated in inert atmosphere up to 1000 °C become glassy polymeric carbon (GPC), a chemically inert and biocompatible material useful for medical applications, such as in the manufacture of heart valves and prosthetic devices. In earlier work we have shown that ion bombardment can modify the surface of GPC, increasing its roughness. The enhanced roughness, which depends on the species, energy and fluence of the ion beam, can improve the biocompatibility of GPC prosthetic artifacts. ...

Summary Nucleotide excision repair ( NER ) is a highly conserved genome repair pathway acting on helix distorting DNA lesions. NER is divided into two subpathways: global genome NER ( GG‐NER ), which is responsible for repair throughout genomes, and transcription‐coupled NER ( TC‐NER ), which acts on lesions that impede transcription. The extent of the T rypanosoma brucei genome that is transcribed is highly unusual, since most genes are organized in multigene transcription units, each transcribed from a single ...

Our experiments show that multilayer inductive shielding performs better than a monolayer shielding of equivalent thickness. We developed an analytic expression for the shielding factor S of a two-layer inductive shielding, extendible to an arbitrary number of layers. The experimental data, obtained from a reduced scale model, fitted this expression well. We demonstrated that multilayer inductive shielding offers better performance for a better price than a traditional monolayer shielding.

This paper presents the dynamic modeling and digital control of a single-stage isolated current rectifier with power factor correction based on the integration of full-bridge and flyback converters. This converter is designed to operate with adjustable output voltage so that it can operate in two distinct operation modes, depending on the input and output voltages. Therefore, small-signal state-space average models are obtained for the converter operating in step-down and step-up operation modes, ...
