MicroRNAs are key regulators of various fundamental biological processes and, although representing only a small portion of the genome, they regulate a much larger population of target genes. Mature microRNAs (miRNAs) are single-stranded RNA molecules of 20-23 nucleotide (nt) length that control gene expression in many cellular processes. These molecules typically reduce the stability of mRNAs, including those of genes that mediate processes in tumorigenesis, such as inflammation, cell cycle regulation, ...

The presence of the blood–brain barrier (BBB) limit gold nanoparticles (GNP) accumulation in central nervous system (CNS) after intravenous (IV) administration. The intranasal (IN) route has been suggested as a good strategy for circumventing the BBB. In this report, we used gold nanoprisms (78 nm) and nanospheres (47 nm), of comparable surface areas (8000 vs 7235 nm2) functionalized with a polyethylene glycol (PEG) and D1 peptide (GNPr-D1 and GNS-D1, respectively) to evaluate their delivery to the CNS after ...

In order to investigate hepatitis C virus (HCV) persistence and replication in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from a group of haemophilic individuals, HCV production and release to PBMC culture supernatants (SNs) from HCV singly infected patients and HIV/HCV co-infected patients was studied. HCV RNA+ SNs were found more frequently from HIV/HCV co-infected individuals (89.5 %) with poor reconstitution of their immune status than from singly HCV-infected patients (57 %) or from HIV/HCV co-infected ...

The early detection of the amyloid beta peptide aggregates involved in Alzheimer’s disease is crucial to test new potential treatments. In this research, we improved the detection of amyloid beta peptide aggregates in vitro and ex vivo by fluorescence combining the use of CRANAD-2 and gold nanorods (GNRs) by the surface enhancement fluorescence effect. We synthetized GNRs and modified their surface with HS-PEG-OMe and HS-PEG-COOH and functionalized them with the D1 peptide, which has the capability ...

In the present study, we investigated in rats the effect of third ventricle injections of 1-(3-chlorophenyl)piperazine (mCPP), a 5-HT2 receptor agonist, on water intake induced by three different physiological stimuli: fluid deprivation, acute salt load and hypovolemia. Injections of mCPP in the doses of 80 and 160 nmol/rat were able to decrease water intake in all three conditions studied. Third ventricle injections of mCPP (160 nmol/rat) were no longer able to diminish water intake in the groups ...

Four factors historical data design which include time (X1), pH 03–10 (X2), NaCl concentration 0.02–0.08 M (X3) and current densities 2.5 to 10 mA cm −2 (X4) was employed to correlate the factors with dye removal and electrical energy consumption as responses. Fifty-six cases of spondylolysis were encountered in 1500 lumbar spine reports reviewed. The frequency of detecting isthmus defects on anteroposterior (AP), lateral, 45-degree right and left oblique, 30-degree up-angled AP, and collimated lateral views was determined. The collimated lateral view showed the largest number of pars defects, 84% of cases. The 30-degree up-angled AP view was more sensitive than the AP view, showing 55% versus 32% of cases. A previously unreported sign of spondylolysis, ...

The application of supervised text categorization strategies for requirements expressed in natural language has been proposed in several works as a method to help analysts in the detection and classification of NFRs concerning different aspects of software. However, a significant number of pre-categorized requirements are needed to train supervised ...

Moyamoya disease (MMD) is an uncommon cerebrovascular disorder characterized by progressive stenosis of the terminal portion of the internal carotid artery and its main branches. Direct and indirect bypass techniques have been devised with the aim of promoting neoangiogenesis. The current study aimed to investigate the role of multiple cranial burr hole (MCBH) operations in the prevention of cerebral ischemic attacks in children with MMD. Seven children suffering from progressive MMD were submitted ...

Abstract In this article, we present an approach to architecture‐driven design of object‐oriented frameworks based on the notion of object‐oriented materialization of architectural styles. This approach leads us to the development of the proto‐framework concept, which is a new denomination for an object‐oriented framework that provides the essential basis to build other frameworks that adopt an underlying architectural design derived from non‐object‐oriented styles. In this context, we describe ...

The PHEX gene (phosphate-regulating gene with homologies to endopeptidases on the X chromosome) encodes a protein (PHEX) with structural homologies to members of the M13 family of zinc metallo-endopeptidases. Mutations in the PHEX gene are responsible for X-linked hypophosphataemia in humans. However, the mechanism by which loss of PHEX function results in the disease phenotype, and the endogenous PHEX substrate(s) remain unknown. In order to study PHEX substrate specificity, combinatorial fluorescent- ...

Web services have acquired enormous popularity among software developers. This popularity has motivated developers to publish a large number of Web service descriptions in UDDI registries. Although these registries provide search facilities, they are still rather difficult to use and often require service consumers to spend too much time manually browsing and selecting service descriptions. This paper presents a novel search method for Web services called WSQBE that aims at both easing query specification ...
