In the State of Amazonas, particularly in the capital Manaus, meningitis has affected populations of different cultures and social strata over the years. Bacterial meningitis is caused by several different species and represents a major issue of public health importance. The present study reports the meningitis case numbers with different etiologies in Amazonas from January 1976 to December 2012.Since the 1970s, the (currently named) Tropical Medicine Foundation of Doutor Heitor Vieira Dourado [Fundação ...

Examination of 248 adult specimens of whitemouth croaker Micropogonias furnieri from five localities along the Brazilian coast revealed 8735 parasites belonging to 41 metazoan species. Samples from Ceará to Bahia and Rio de Janeiro to Santa Catarina showed a high level of correct assignation (92 and 87%, respectively) and cross assignation ( i.e. almost all specimens misidentified in Ceará were assigned to Bahia and almost all specimens misidentified in Bahia were classified as Ceará), so samples were ...

In this letter, we make a case for in-network intelligence in programmable data planes (PDPs) by taking the first steps toward running distributed Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) in programmable switches. The main novelty of our research lies in distributing the neurons of an ANN into multiple switches instead of running an entire ANN in a single device. The many advantages of this approach include wider network flow visibility and better resource usage across switches and links. We discuss the ...

Cerebrovascular diseases are currently a major global health problem. Considering the limitations of current therapy, the search for new alternatives for the treatment of these diseases is necessary and, in this context, curcumin, a molecule that has neuroprotective properties already described in the literature. A limiting factor when considering therapies for the nervous tissue is the presence of the blood-brain barrier which stimulates the search for new drug delivery strategies. In this context, ...

Lipid biomarkers (sterols, alcohols and taraxerol) were quantified in 30 surface sediments from the Camamu Bay (CB), NE Brazil, with the aim of evaluating the sources and distribution of organic matter (OM) in a tropical, well-preserved coastal system. The total organic carbon varied in a wide range (0.8–38.3 mg g−1), reflecting distinct patterns of sediment grain size and hydrodynamics at CB. A mean C/N molar ratio of 22.2 ± 5.2 suggests an important allochthonous source of OM. This is confirmed by the ...

In this paper, we studied density effects in semantic networks constructed from a database of titles of papers published in scientific journals as a parameter to indicate the diversity of concepts in a journal. The proposed method essentially consists of fixing the number of titles for all of the studied scientific journals and analyzing the behavior of the density variation curves with regard to the inclusion of cliques (that is, complete networks associated with the titles). We observed that density ...

We describe the epidemiology of malaria in a frontier agricultural settlement in Brazilian Amazonia. We analysed the incidence of slide-confirmed symptomatic infections diagnosed between 2001 and 2006 in a cohort of 531 individuals (2281.53 person-years of follow-up) and parasite prevalence data derived from four cross-sectional surveys. Overall, the incidence rates of Plasmodium vivax and P. falciparum were 20.6/100 and 6.8/100 person-years at risk, respectively, with a marked decline in the incidence ...

Abstract Oxidative stress triggers ferroptosis, a form of cellular necrosis characterized by iron-dependent lipid peroxidation, and has been implicated in Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) pathogenesis. We investigated whether Bach1, a transcription factor that represses multiple antioxidant genes, regulates host resistance to Mtb. We found that BACH1 expression is associated clinically with active pulmonary tuberculosis. Bach1 deletion in Mtb-infected mice increased glutathione levels and Gpx4 expression ...

Abstract BACKGROUND Digitaria insularis is a weed species that has gained considerable importance in Brazil's soybean production areas that rely on glyphosate‐resistant cultivars. Herbicide‐resistant weed populations of this species have been reported in many regions in Brazil, first in the south, followed by later reports in the north. We hypothesized that the spread of herbicide‐resistant D. insularis is facilitated by movement of agricultural machinery from the southern regions of Brazil. RESULTS ...

Background Secondary bacterial infections from snakebites contribute to the high complication rates that can lead to permanent function loss and disabilities. The pro-inflammatory activity of enterolobin, a haemolytic protein from Enterolobium contortisiliquum seeds, was investigated. In doses ranging from 1 to 20 micrograms/site, enterolobin induced a dose-dependent paw oedema and pleurisy in rats. The effect was apparent after 15 min, peaked at 6 hr and decreased 24 hr after enterolobin was administered. Cellular necrosis during Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infection promotes both immunopathology and bacterial dissemination. Glutathione peroxidase-4 (Gpx4) is an enzyme that plays a critical role in preventing iron-dependent lipid peroxidation-mediated cell death (ferroptosis), a process previously implicated in the necrotic pathology seen in Mtb-infected mice. Here, we document altered GPX4 expression, glutathione levels, and lipid peroxidation in patients with active tuberculosis and assess the ...

Tuberculosis (TB) still causes significant morbidity and mortality worldwide, especially in persons living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). This disease is hallmarked by persistent oxidative stress and systemic inflammation. Abstract Background Despite widespread availability of curative therapy, tuberculosis (TB) treatment outcomes remain suboptimal. Despite the availability of effective antimicrobials, tuberculosis (TB) is still a serious health threat. Mortality is even higher in people living with HIV who are diagnosed with TB. New therapies are needed to shorten the time required to cure TB and decrease fatality rates in this population. Tuberculosis elimination requires treatment of latently infected high-risk persons, such as contacts of index cases. Identification and referral of tuberculosis contacts for investigation are major barriers in the contact cascade-of-care.
