Children from riverside communities located downstream of gold mining areas may be chronically exposed to relatively high levels of MeHg through the consumption of fish of this region. The objective of this study was to evaluate and compare levels of THg and MeHg in hair of children less than 12 years in communities near mines in the municipality of Itaituba and in communities far from prospecting areas in the city of Abaetetuba. The communities of Itaituba (Barreiras and São Luiz do Tapajós) had ...

UNS S32205 duplex stainless steel welds were performed by friction stir welding (FSW). Advancing and retreating sides showed distinct characteristics in the welded joint. The advancing side shows the strongest grain refinement which is corroborated by microhardness measurements. The microstructure characterization was carried out by optical, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The thermomechanically affected zone displays austenite islands deformed in a ferrite matrix. The stir zone (SZ) ...

Friction stir welding (FSW) is a solid-state joining process with numerous advantages such as good dimensional stability and repeatability, which is widely used Al alloys and with a great potential for critical joining applications involving high melting temperature alloys. Twelve millimeter thick plates of ISO 3183 X80M (API 5L X80) steel was friction stir welded using two passes on both sides of the plate using ceramic tools. Different heat inputs were obtained using a fix travel (welding) speed ...

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of different concentrations of ascorbic acid (25, 50, and 100 μg/mL) in supplemented minimum essential medium (MEM+) on the development of equine preantral follicles that were cultured in vitro for 2 or 6 days. The contralateral ovaries (n = 5) from five mares in seasonal anestrus were collected from a local abattoir. Nine ovarian tissue fragments of approximately 5 × 5 × 1 mm were obtained from each animal. One fragment was immediately fixed and subjected ...

Friction stir welding (FSW) is a promising candidate for use in pipeline steels because it offers high productivity and sound welded joints. This study presents a fracture toughness assessment of FSW-welded two-pass butt joints, different regions within the joints and tests temperatures (25 °C, −15 °C, −20 °C, −35 °C, −40 °C) were used. Base plates of API-X80 steel 12 mm thick were FSW-welded using two different pass sequences, coincident and alternate directions. The results presented consistently high toughness ...

Recent studies indicate that the antral follicle population may be of paramount importance to improve reproductive performance in cows. There is already an agreement that the antral follicle count (AFC; follicles ≥3 mm in diameter) is a highly variable trait among animals, but with high repeatability in the same individual. Thus, females can be classified into low, intermediate or high AFC. Several studies in Bos taurus show a positive correlation between AFC and fertility parameters, such as increased ...

Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection is thought to induce oxidative stress. N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC) is widely used in patients with chronic pulmonary diseases including tuberculosis due to its mucolytic and anti-oxidant activities. Here, we tested whether NAC exerts a direct antibiotic activity against mycobacteria. Oxidative stress status in plasma was compared between pulmonary TB (PTB) patients and those with latent M. tuberculosis infection (LTBI) or healthy uninfected individuals. Lipid peroxidation, ...

The aim of this study was to characterize mechanical and microstructural characteristics of friction-stir-welded GL E36 shipbuilding steel. The tool rotational speed was kept constant at 500 rpm and different welding speeds were used (1, 2 and 3 mm/s) to achieve different heat inputs. Thermal cycles were monitored by thermocouples placed near the weld face. The welded joints showed a very good esthetics and homogeneous surface quality that indicate a stability of the considered process parameters. ...

This study investigated the interactions between cumulus cells (CCs) and oocytes and programmed cell death in bovine cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) with different morphological characteristics. DNA fragmentation was assessed in CCs at 0 and 24 h of maturation, as well as parthenogenetic developmental competence on the 9th day post-activation, blastocyst quality and BCL-2 and BAX transcript levels in matured CCs. Most immature oocytes in the COC-A group (full cumulus and several compact layers) were ...

There is a necessity to systematically sample taxa to enlighten our knowledge on the presence of histological correlates of avian-like air sacs among dinosaurs. This work expands the studies on the occurrence of pneumosteum in sauropods to the Brazilian lithostrotian titanosaur Uberabatitan ribeiroi. This confirms previous hypotheses on the insertion of an air sacs system on titanosaurian vertebrae based on external observation and CT-scans. We also highlight that diagenesis can obliterate traces ...

This article discusses standard and new disruptive strategies in the race to develop an anti-COVID-19 vaccine. We also included new bioinformatic data from our group mapping immunodominant epitopes and structural analysis of the spike protein. Another innovative approach reviewed here is the use of BCG vaccine as priming strategy and/or delivery system expressing SARS-CoV-2 antigens.

In the design of hydraulic machines, the selection of the correct materials and the application of surface treatments are essential to improve the cavitation resistance of components. In this investigation, the cavitation erosion behavior of the compound and of the diffusion layer of ion-nitrided 34 CrAlNi 7 steel was studied. Before nitriding, the 34 CrAlNi 7 steel was heat treated by quenching and tempering and by annealing, generating microstructures that are used or could be used in the production ...

This article provides an overview of sport policies in Brazil. The investigation methodology involved a critical analysis of important national policy documents dedicated to the subject. The article begins with an analysis of the creation of the field, since the passage of the first laws in the 1940s, up to the current stage of Brazilian sport. As a conclusion, the paper finds that the sports policy in Brazil moved away from an the organization model centred only on the state. However, it was noted ...

Drivers for globalization are significant where today’s organizations look for cheaper and faster ways to develop software as well as ways to satisfy quality and investment requirements imposed by customers, shareholders, and governments. Given these needs, Global Software Development (GSD) has become a “normal” way of doing business. Working in GSD often require teams of different cultures to work together. A poor understanding of cultural differences can create barriers to trust or missed opportunities. ...
