Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is one of the most common human genetic abnormalities, and it has a significant prevalence in the male population (X chromosome linked). The purpose of this study was to estimate the frequency of impaired fasting glucose and diabetes among G6PD-deficient persons in Manaus, Brazil, an area in the Western Brazilian Amazon to which malaria is endemic. Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase-deficient males had more impaired fasting glucose and diabetes. This ...

The aim of this study was to simultaneously monitoring cytomegalovirus and human herpesvirus 6 active infections using nested-polymerase chain reaction and, together with clinical findings, follow the clinical status of patients undergoing liver transplant. The human β-herpesviruses, including cytomegalovirus and human herpesvirus 6, are ubiquitous among human populations. Active infections of human herpesvirus 6 and cytomegalovirus are common after liver transplantation, possibly induced and facilitated ...

Human and animal fungal pathogens are a growing threat worldwide leading to emerging infections and creating new risks for established ones. There is a growing need for a rapid and accurate identification of pathogens to enable early diagnosis and targeted antifungal therapy. Morphological and biochemical identification methods are time-consuming and require trained experts. Alternatively, molecular methods, such as DNA barcoding, a powerful and easy tool for rapid monophasic identification, offer ...

Jambu [Acmella oleracea (L.) R. K. Jansen] is a leaf vegetable native to the Amazon, being very used for cookery, traditional medicine treatments, and both cosmetic and pharmaceutical industry. Despite its growing adoption, this leaf vegetable still lacks more precise information about its cultivation. Based on this, this study aimed to evaluate the influence of spacing and density of plants per cultivation hole in the growth and production of jambu. The experiment was conducted in the vegetable garden ...

High-fat diet increase two to three times the plasma lipopolysaccharide (LPS) levels and induce subclinical inflammation. Diet can modify gene expression due to epigenetic processes related to MicroRNAs (miRNAs). MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play important role in the post-transcriptional mechanisms involved in regulation of expression of genes related to the inflammatory response. Also, diet can indirectly induce post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression by miRNAs, which may affect the risk for the ...

We performed a meta-analysis to understand the crowding construct in the retail context. The systematic review identified 535 studies, of which 69 were present in the analysis conducted, generating 504 quantitative relationships. Our meta-analysis indicated that the perception of crowding generates many negative feelings, a few positive feelings, minimal perceived value, low attractiveness of the environment and low short- and long-term consequent behaviours. At the methodological level, it was ...

The ongoing decline in abundance and diversity of shark stocks, primarily due to uncontrolled fishery exploitation, is a worldwide problem. An additional problem for the development of conservation and management programmes is the identification of species diversity within a given area, given the morphological similarities among shark species, and the typical disembarkation of processed carcasses which are almost impossible to differentiate. The main aim of the present study was to identify those ...

The Goliath grouper ( Epinephelus itajara ) is one of the most endangered species of fish of the subfamily Epinephelinae. Slow to develop and mature, and dependent on mangrove habitats for breeding, the species also suffers intense harvesting, which has reduced drastically in numbers in many areas. To contribute to the understanding of the characteristics of E. itajara populations, we conducted a molecular genetics study of the species, focusing on populations from the Northern Brazilian coast. In the present work a geometrically non-linear model is presented to study the coupling of axial and torsional vibrations on a drill-string, which is described as a vertical slender beam under axial rotation. It is known that the geometrical non-linearities play an important role in the stiffening of a beam. Here, the geometrical stiffening is analyzed using a non-linear finite element approximation, in which large rotations and non-linear strain-displacements are taken into account. The effect ...

Stable isotopes are useful tools for studying species residency and movement in aquatic environments. Yet, many questions about their use still remain, mostly related to assumptions that should be experimentally validated, such as turnover rates and discrimination factors. Salinity is a key environmental variable that may influence turnover and discrimination factors, but its effects have not been tested. A controlled diet-shift experiment was conducted with whitemouth croakers (Micropogonias furnieri), ...
