To establish, among the cut-off values for the homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR) cited in the literature, the best in identifying metabolic syndrome (MS) in obese and overweight children.A total of 106 pre-pubertal children were studied. The definition of MS was adapted from that of the International Diabetes Federation. For each cut-off values for HOMA-IR, it was estimated sensibility and specificity for MS. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was generated ...

In this research, we studied the use of soybean hull hydrolysate (SHH) as a substrate for ethanol and xylitol production using an osmotolerant strain of Candida guilliermondii. The best acid hydrolysis of soybean hull achieved a recovery of 85 and 62% of xylose and mannose, respectively. Among detoxification treatments, activated charcoal 10% (w/v) showed the best results. Kinetic parameters obtained from the cultivation on four-fold concentrated SHH have shown that the osmotic pressure of this medium ...

Abstract Introduction The administration of stem cells holds promise as a potential therapy for spinal cord injury (SCI). Mesenchymal stem cells have advantages for clinical applications, since they can be easily obtained, are suitable for autologous transplantation and have been previously shown to induce regeneration of the spinal cord in experimental settings. Here we evaluated the feasibility, safety and potential efficacy of autologous transplantation of mesenchymal stem cells in subjects with ...

Mosquito-borne arboviruses are a major public health concern worldwide and are responsible for emerging and re-emerging diseases. Taken together, the arboviruses have a strong impact on public health and are the most common causes of equine encephalitis. In-depth diagnostic investigation of equine viral encephalitis is of utmost importance for the epidemiological surveillance and control of this disease. Regarding neurological disorders in equids, in April-May 2018, at least 12 cases of equid mortality ...

Objective: Insulin resistance has a central role in the pathophysiology of cardiovascular atherosclerotic disease. Adipose tissue is of capital importance in view of its production of adipokines. The present study aims to determine the association of metabolic syndrome components, which constitute risk factors for cardiovascular atherosclerotic disease, and leptin and adiponectin with insulin resistance in prepubertal children.

Breast cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers in the world and is also the leading cause of cancer death in women. The use of bioactive compounds of functional foods contributes to reduce the risk of chronic diseases, such as cancer and vascular disorders. In this study, we evaluated the antioxidant potential and the influence of pitaya extract (PE) on cell viability, colony formation, cell cycle, apoptosis, and expression of BRCA 1 , BRCA 2 , PRAB, and Er α in breast cancer cell lines (MCF‐7 and ...

Identification of the degree of porous medium clogging in constructed wetlands (CWs) is a complex procedure because bed obstruction is a phenomenon that occurs in the subsurface and involves several factors. Ideal methods must allow for subsurface analysis and be non-invasive, what is the case of ground penetrating radar (GPR or georadar) used for soil characterization. Thus, this work aimed to evaluate the use of GPR for clogging characterization of two full-scale horizontal subsurface flow constructed ...

Assim, objetivou- ...

The influent solids load, biofilm formation and occupation of void spaces by precipitates have been identified as major contributors to clogging the pores of horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetlands (HSSF-CWs). Several publications suggest that most of the accumulated material is inorganic, and this indicates that wear of the substrate may be an important constituent of clogging. The objective of this study was to characterize, in mineralogical, physical (specific mass) and chemical terms (neutralization ...

Objective The risks of metabolic syndrome (MetSyn) rely on the interaction between insulin resistance, metabolic abnormalities, inflammation and vascular dysfunction. Insulin sensitizers counteract some of these abnormalities. Essas grandes quantidades ...

The performance of a Pt(II) diazapyrenium-based metallacycle as a reusable substoichiometric catalyst for the SNAr reaction between halodinitrobenzenes and sodium azide at rt in aqueous media is reported. The results suggest that the catalytic effect is promoted by the association of the azide to the diazapyrenium cationic subunits of the catalyst. The findings demonstrate that the formation of an inclusion complex between pyrene and the metallacycle has a regulatory effect over the system, resulting ...

Cork oaks show a high capacity of bud sprouting as a response to injury, which is important for species survival when dealing with external factors, such as drought or fires. The characterization of the cork oak transcriptome involved in the different stages of bud sprouting is essential to understanding the mechanisms involved in these processes. In this study, the transcriptional profile of different stages of bud sprouting, namely (1) dormant bud and (2) bud swollen, vs. (3) red bud and (4) open ...
