The study is focused on the effect of different cooking conditions on the antioxidant content, particularly anthocyanins, of Oryza sativa L. 'Violet Nori', a new black rice cultivar. 10 different cooking tests were performed. The selected cooking conditions allowed to evaluate the effect of boiling, roasting, oven cooking, risotto cooking, and oriental cooking. The total anthocyanins amounts were evaluated by both a spectrophotometric pH differential method and High-Performance Liquid Chromatography ( ...

The focus of this work is the archaeometric investigation of ceramic wasters found in a dump in the workshop area of Cumae that are mostly represented by important production indicators of pottery produced in the Augustean-Tiberian period. The fragments belong to different ceramic classes and productions, such as: pompeian red ware, common cookwares, parts of kiln vault, thin-walled pottery, terra sigillata, large container, bar, and graue Platten. Provenance of the raw materials used for each ceramic ...

A series of studies investigated the toxicities of tannery-derived complex mixtures, i.e. vegetable tannin (VT) from Acacia sp. or phenol-based synthetic tannin (ST), and wastewater from tannin-based vs. chromium-based tanneries. Toxicity was evaluated by multiple bioassays including developmental defects and loss of fertilization rate in sea urchin embryos and sperm ( Paracentrotus lividus and Sphaerechinus granularis), and algal growth inhibition ( Dunaliella tertiolecta and Selenastrum capricornutum). ...

From the discovery of the Zika virus (ZIKV) in 1947 in Uganda (Africa), until its arrival in South America, it was not known that it would affect human reproductive life so severely. Today, damage to the central nervous system is known to be multiple, and microcephaly is considered the tip of the iceberg. Microcephaly actually represents the epilogue of this infection's devastating process on the central nervous system of embryos and fetuses. As a result of central nervous system aggression by the ...

Protein conformational fluctuations are critical for biological functions, although the relationship between protein motion and function has yet to be fully explored. By a thorough bioinformatics analysis of cholinesterases (ChEs), we identified specific hot spots, responsible for protein fluctuations and functions, and those active-site residues that play a role in modulating the cooperative network among the key substructures. This drew the optimization of our design strategy to discover potent ...

Numerous pieces of evidence demonstrate that oxidative stress impairs biological functions, speeds up aging, and has a role in a variety of human diseases, including systemic and oral inflammatory disorders, and even cancer. Therefore, technologies providing accurate measures of oxidative stress indicators or biomarkers appear essential in the identification/prevention of such diseases, and in their management. Particularly advantageous is the employement of point-of-care tests based on affordable ...

Hospital malnutrition affects nearly 30% of patients in medical wards and correlates with worse outcomes. An early assessment is necessary to stratify the risk of short-term outcomes and mortality. Only recently polymers with intrinsic conductive properties have been studied in relation to their incorporation into bioactive scaffolds for use in tissue engineering. The reason for this interest is that such scaffolds could electrically stimulate cells and thus regulate specific cellular activities, and by this means influence the process of regeneration of those tissues that respond to electrical impulses. In our work, macroporous hydrogels are developed with controlled pore morphology and conductive ...

Hereditary angioedema with C1 inhibitor deficiency (C1-INH-HAE) is a rare inherited genetic disease characterized by recurrent swelling episodes of the skin, gastrointestinal tract, and upper airways. Angioedema attacks result from increased vascular permeability due to the release of bradykinin from high molecular weight kininogen. Currently, there are no biomarkers predicting the frequency of angioedema attacks. Vascular permeability is modulated by several factors, including vascular endothelial ...

Summary Activation of the innate immune system via pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) is key to generate lasting adaptive immunity. PRRs detect unique chemical patterns associated with invading microorganisms, but whether and how the physical properties of PRR ligands influence the development of the immune response remains unknown. Through the study of fungal mannans, we show that the physical form of PRR ligands dictates the immune response. Soluble mannans are immunosilent in the periphery but elicit ...

Irrespective of microbiological etiology, the host's inability to fully downregulate systemic inflammation is the dominant pathogenetic process contributing to acute and long-term morbidity and mortality in CAP.
