Three new diterpene acids have been isolated from the leaves of Juniperus communis and their structures, elucidated by spectroscopic methods, were identified as 7-oxo-13-epi- pimara-8,15-dien-18-oic acid, 7α-hydroxysandaracopimaric acid and (14 S)-14,15-dihydroxylabda- 8(17),13(16)-dien-19-oic acid. Biflavonyls, fatty acids and diterpenoids with known structures were also isolated.

The loss in muscle mass coupled with a decrease in specific force and shift in fiber composition are all marks of aging. Training and regular exercise attenuate the signs of sarcopenia. However, pathologic conditions limit the ability to perform physical exercise. We addressed whether electrical stimulation (ES) is an alternative intervention to improve muscle recovery and defined the molecular mechanism associated with improvement in muscle structure and function. We analyzed, at functional, structural, ...

Abstract: APAF‐1 plays a pivotal role in mitochondria‐dependent apoptosis, binding to cytochrome c and favoring activation of caspase‐9. It has been shown that epigenetic silencing of the APAF‐1 gene is a common event in several metastatic melanoma cells in vitro . We determined, by Western blot, variation in the level of expression of APAF‐1 in several human melanoma cell lines and, by immunohistochemistry, in a group of 106 histological samples including benign and malignant melanocytic lesions. ...

The human HtrA family of proteases consists of three members: HtrA1, HtrA2, and HtrA3. In bacteria, the chief role of HtrA is recognition and degradation of misfolded proteins in the periplasm, combining a dual activity of chaperone and protease. In humans, the three HtrA homologues appear to be involved in diverse functions such as cell growth, apoptosis, allergic reactions, fertilization, control of blood pressure, and blood clotting. Previous studies using RNA blot hybridization have shown that ...

From wells to refining plants and distribution networks, operations in the oil and gas industry involve the transport of multiphase mixtures through long pipelines. One of the most representative patterns is the so-called slug flow, which is characterized by the intermittent passage of gaseous and liquid structures. The monitoring of slug flows allows for proper control and safety in many operations in the oil and gas industry. In recent years, distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) has emerged as a ...

A total of 4,487 serum samples were collected from cattle in 173 farms from different parts of Mexico. Information about potential risk factors and spatial location of the farms was obtained through a questionnaire to farm´ owners and by global positioning system (GPS) apparatus respectively. In-vehicle communication systems are usually managed by controller area networks (CAN). By broadcasting packets to their bus, the CAN facilitates the interaction between Electronic Control Units (ECU) that coordinate, monitor and control internal vehicle components. With no authentication mechanism for identifying the legitimacy and source of packets, CAN are vulnerable to cyber-attacks. An Intrusion Detection System (IDS) can detect attacks on CAN and machine learning can be used to create the models ...

Abstract Age‐related sarcopenia is characterized by a progressive loss of muscle mass with decline in specific force, having dramatic consequences on mobility and quality of life in seniors. The etiology of sarcopenia is multifactorial and underlying mechanisms are currently not fully elucidated. Physical exercise is known to have beneficial effects on muscle trophism and force production. Alterations of mitochondrial Ca 2+ homeostasis regulated by mitochondrial calcium uniporter ( MCU ) have been recently ...

The antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) is a critical player of the antioxidative defense whose activity is altered in several chronic diseases, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. However, how oxidative insult affects muscle homeostasis remains unclear. This study addresses the role of oxidative stress on muscle homeostasis and function by the generation of a transgenic mouse model expressing a mutant SOD1 gene (SOD1G93A) selectively in skeletal muscle. Transgenic mice developed ...

The human HtrA family of proteases consists of four members: HtrA1, HtrA2, HtrA3, and HtrA4. In humans the four HtrA homologues appear to be involved in several important functions such as cell growth, apoptosis, and inflammatory reactions, and they control cell fate via regulated protein metabolism. In previous studies it was shown that the expression of HtrA1 was ubiquitous in normal adult human tissues. Here we examined the expression of HtrA1 protein and its corresponding mRNA during mouse embryogenesis ...

Cyclin T1 was recently identified, together with cdk9 (previously named PITALRE), as part of the TAK multiprotein complex, a co-factor targeted by the human immunodeficiency virus Type 1 (HIV-1) protein named Tat, suggesting a role for this complex in transcription elongation. Although studies on mRNA and protein expression have shown that cyclin T1 is ubiquitous in adult human tissues, no data have yet been reported regarding the expression of this protein in different cell lineages. Using a polyclonal ...

Using first-principles calculations, we perform a comprehensive and systematic analysis to establish the role of van der Waals (vdW) interactions and anharmonicity in the vibrational properties of the low-temperature orthorhombic phase of the hybrid perovskite CH3NH3PbI3. To this end, we consider the most common approaches for including vdW effects in our phonon calculations: the semiempirical Grimme approximations, the Tkatchenko-Scheffler dispersion corrections, and the vdW density-functional method. ...

Aging is usually accompanied by a significant reduction in muscle mass and force. To determine the relative contribution of inactivity and aging per se to this decay, we compared muscle function and structure in (a) male participants belonging to a group of well-trained seniors (average of 70 years) who exercised regularly in their previous 30 years and (b) age-matched healthy sedentary seniors with (c) active young men (average of 27 years). The results collected show that relative to their sedentary ...

The histologic features of aging muscle suggest that denervation contributes to atrophy, that immobility accelerates the process, and that routine exercise may protect against loss of motor units and muscle tissue. Here, we compared muscle biopsies from sedentary and physically active seniors and found that seniors with a long history of high-level recreational activity up to the time of muscle biopsy had 1) lower loss of muscle strength versus young men (32% loss in physically active vs 51% loss ...
