BackgroundComparable global data on health and nutrition of school-aged children and adolescents are scarce. We aimed to estimate age trajectories and time trends in mean height and mean body-mass index (BMI), which measures weight gain beyond what is expected from height gain, for school-aged children and adolescents.MethodsFor this pooled analysis, we used a database of cardiometabolic risk factors collated by the Non-Communicable Disease Risk Factor Collaboration. We applied a Bayesian hierarchical ...

The outbreaks of Zika virus (ZIKV) infection in Brazil, 2015-2016, were associated with severe congenital malformations. Our translational study aimed to test the efficacy of the antiviral agent sofosbuvir (SOF) against vertical transmission of ZIKV and the associated congenital syndrome (CZS), using a rhesus monkey model. Eight pregnant macaques were successfully infected during the organogenesis phase with a Brazilian ZIKV strain; five of them received SOF from two to fifteen days post-infection. ...

Recently, citizen involvement has been increasingly used in urban disaster prevention and management, taking advantage of new ubiquitous and collaborative technologies. This scenario has created a unique opportunity to leverage the work of crowds of volunteers. As a result, crowdsourcing approaches for disaster prevention and management have been proposed and evaluated. However, the articulation of citizens, tasks, and outcomes as a continuous flow of knowledge generation reveals a complex ecosystem ...

We demonstrate that N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) reduces graphene oxide (GO) at room temperature. This represents a new green method to produce reduced GO (rGO). NAC adheres to the rGO surface as demonstrated by several spectroscopy techniques and avoids GO-mediated oxidation of glutathione. This method offers new opportunities for the production of green biocompatible rGO and NAC-based therapies.

Erythrocytosis is one of the most common side effects occurring during testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) in male hypogonadism. It is well known that all testosterone formulations may cause Hb and hematocrit increase, especially with short-acting injectable formulations. Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2is) are a new class of glucose-lowering agents that reduce hyperglycemia in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) by inhibition of renal glucose reabsorption, leading to increased ...

Blood pressure (BP) is a complex, multifactorial clinical outcome driven by genetic susceptibility, behavioral choices, and environmental factors. Many molecular mechanisms have been proposed for the pathophysiology of high BP even as its prevalence continues to grow worldwide, increasing morbidity and marking it as a major public health concern. To address this, we evaluated miRNA profiling in blood leukocytes as potential biomarkers of BP and BP-related risk factors. The Beijing Truck Driver Air ...

Histologic and histomorphometric evaluations of gingival biopsy samples of patients presenting either a thick or a thin gingival biotype were performed. Full-thickness gingival biopsy samples were obtained and processed for histologic and histometric evaluations. Thickness of the keratinized mucosa or gingiva was found to be increased in the thick biotype. Specifically, the connective tissue layer was thicker with no change in epithelial thickness. In conclusion, gingival transparency appears to ...

Research on Parkinson's disease (PD) and drug development is hampered by the lack of suitable human in vitro models that simply and accurately recreate the disease conditions. To counteract this, many attempts to differentiate cell lines, such as the human SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma, into dopaminergic neurons have been undertaken since they are easier to cultivate when compared with other cellular models. Here, we characterized neuronal features discriminating undifferentiated and retinoic acid (RA)-differentiated ...

Oxidative stress is involved in many cancer-related processes; however, current therapeutics are unable to benefit from this approach. The lungs have a very exquisite redox environment that may contribute to the frequent and deadly nature of lung cancer. Very few studies specifically address lung large-cell carcinoma (LCC), even though this is one of the major subtypes. Using bioinformatic (in silico) tools, we demonstrated that a more aggressive lung LCC cell line (HOP-92) has an overall increase ...

Sustainable forest management has to consider the long-term effects of climate change on species growth to develop adaptation measures. In this perspective, dendrochronology provides valuable information on climate-growth relationships over long time periods. Tree-ring analyses in mixed stands can elucidate how different species respond to climate change within the same environmental conditions. However, few studies have investigated such stands, especially in South-Eastern Europe. In the forest ...

Telomere length and dynamics are increasingly scrutinized as ultimate determinants of performance, including age-dependent mortality and fecundity. Few studies have investigated longevity in relation to telomere length (TL) in the wild and none has analysed longevity in relation to TL soon after hatching, despite the fact that telomere shortening may mostly occur early in life. We show that TL in nestling barn swallows (Hirundo rustica) in the wild does not predict longevity. However, TL positively ...

The adenosine pathway is a powerful evolutionarily selected mechanism aimed at a fine modulation of inflammatory responses and protection of tissues from injuries. Adenosine exerts its modulatory effects via interaction with G protein-coupled receptors, designated as A1, A2A, A2B and A3. In this regard, extracellular adenosine concentrations are critical in determining its ability of regulating several biological functions. The levels achieved by adenosine in close proximity of its receptors are ...

Abstract Background Increased risk of fractures and osteoporosis have been associated with the use of antiretroviral drugs. There is a paucity of prospective evaluations of bone markers after the initiation of drugs currently recommended to treat HIV infection and results on the evolution of these markers are conflicting. Lastly, the effect of tenofovir on 1,25-(OH) 2 vitamin D is uncertain. Methods We performed a prospective study on the evolution of bone markers, parathormone and 1,25-(OH) 2 vitamin ...

In Europe most Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) mountain forests have been altered by human activities, leading to a lack of reference condition concerning their original structure. Nonetheless, remnants of Norway spruce primeval forests still exist in the Carpathians. Our objective was to assess the differences in structure between managed and unmanaged stands, concerning diameter distributions, amount of standing deadwood, spatial distributions and spatial structure of trees. We established ...

The dengue non-structural 3 (NS3) is a multifunctional protein, containing a serino-protease domain, located at the N-terminal portion, and helicase, NTPase and RTPase domains present in the C-terminal region. This protein is considered the main target for CD4+ and CD8+ T cell responses during dengue infection, which may be involved in protection. However, few studies have been undertaken evaluating the use of this protein as a protective antigen against dengue, as well as other flavivirus. In the ...
