Mandibular ramus bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) has been the most commonly used technique in orthognathic surgery for mandibular advancement. However, a common complication of BSSO has been the occurrence of visible and palpable osseous defects at the inferior border of the mandible. The aim of the present study was to determine whether bone grafting of the osseous defect at surgery would reduce the defect at 1 year postoperatively compared with no bone grafting. The present retrospective ...

The development of targeted therapies for wound repair is knowing a growing interest due to the increasing aging of the population and the incidence of chronic pathologies, mainly pressure ulcers. Among molecules recruiting cell populations and promoting the formation of new vital tissue, sodium mesoglycan (MSG) has been proven to be effective in wound healing. In this work, MSG impregnation of polymer matrices has been attempted by a supercritical carbon dioxide-based process. Polymeric matrices ...

Polycaprolactone (PCL)/Polyethylene-glycol (PEG) capsules are prepared by injection molding with the aim of producing Colon-specific Drug Delivery Systems (CDDS). PCL, being a gastroresistant polymer, is suitable for this kind of delivery; however, the release from PCL devices is too slow. For this reason, in this paper, different percentages of PEG (10, 20 and 30 w/w %) have been added to obtain blends able to modulate the release from PCL-based capsules. The drug release rate from PCL/PEG capsules increases ...

The high cost of the Poly(lactic) Acid when compared to its durable competitors is a significant drawback that inhibits its diffusion for many industrial applications. A common solution is the compounding with other polymers that preserve biodegradability, and thermoplastic starch (TPS) is a conventional choice. The innovation proposed in this work is to replace into the starch plasticization process part of the glycerol with a sunflower seed oil resulting from the frying process in a fast food. ...

The FLIDAR, built at IROE-CNR in Florence, was the first of a new generation of sensors operating with high spectral resolution both as fluorescence lidar and passive spectrometer. This research includes the sensor development and the study of a suitable data processing for an extensive monitoring of the marine environment. As a result, both the laboratory and field experiments allowed the monitoring of: (1) water column temperature, by the water-Raman spectral shape; (2) oil pollution (oil class identification ...

Carfilzomib-lenalidomide-dexamethasone (KRd) has been approved for the treatment of relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma (RRMM). We conducted a retrospective analysis of 197 RRMM patients (pts) between January 2016 and March 2018 in six Italian hematologic centers, with the aim to evaluate efficacy and safety of KRd in real-life. At KRd initiation 27% carried high risk cytogenetic abnormalities (HRCA) [del17p and/or t(4;14) and/or t(14;16)], median number of prior lines of therapy was 2 (1-8), nearly ...

Abstract Aim: To evaluate the influence of deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM) particles concomitant with the placement of a collagen membrane on alveolar ridge preservation and on osseointegration of implants placed into alveolar sockets immediately after tooth extraction. Material and methods: The pulp tissue of the mesial roots of 3 P 3 was removed in six Labrador dogs and the root canals were filled. Flaps were elevated in the right side of the mandible, and the buccal and lingual alveolar ...

Microtox solid phase test is an acute toxicity test for solid matrices based on inhibition of natural bioluminescence of the marine bacterium Vibrio fischeri. Protocols developed to overcome the effects of confounding factors are proposed in the literature that differs by important practical and methodological issues. This work focused on diluents used for sediment resuspension and dilution. Two artificial seawaters, one natural seawater and two phosphate buffer solutions, were compared. The results ...

This work reports some considerations on the possible contribution of sulfide and ammonia to the toxicity of elutriate samples of sediments from the Venice lagoon, tested with a battery of bioassays using early life stages of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus and the oyster Crassostrea gigas. A comparison of ammonia or sulfide concentration in the test matrix, matrix toxicity, and the sensitivity limit of bioassays for ammonia or sulfide were used in evaluating toxicity data. Results highlighted ...

Introduction Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a relatively rare tumor, with the epithelioid type occurring more frequently. Several biomarkers have been suggested for screening and early diagnosis of MPM. Currently, high levels of soluble mesothelin-related peptides (SMRP), plasma osteopontin (pOPN) and vimentin have been reported in patients with MPM as promising markers for diagnosis, but their clinical use in monitoring is still discussed. The aim of our study was to evaluate the usefulness ...

Identification of patient sub-groups with smoldering multiple myeloma (SMM) at high risk of progression to active disease (MM) is an important goal. 18F-FDG PET/CT (positron emission tomography (PET) integrated with computed tomography (PET/CT) using glucose labelled with the positron-emitting radionuclide 18F) allows for assessing early skeletal involvement. Identification of osteolytic lesions by this technique has recently been incorporated into the updated International Myeloma Working Group criteria ...

Fluorescence lidar is an interesting tool for the control of vegetation status, monitoring stresses also at an early, previsual stage. However, a complete physiological interpretation of the fluorescence spectra and their variations related to the plant stresses is still missing.
